Tuesday Morning Quarterbacks

I apologize to Gregg Easterbrook for swiping the name of his old column. Just thought that maybe I'd start a thread for people to crow, whine, or cry about their teams.

I hate saying this -- because I've been hurt and heartbroken so many times before -- but I am starting to think the NY Giants are for real, at least as a solid playoff contender. The special teams have gone from a dismal liability to a shining asset, the defense actually seems to be okay (for years, the Giants' defense was much-praised, owing more to team history than actual performance), and damnit, the team's most glaring weakness -- its offensive line -- seems to be doing a good if not great job in pass and run blocking.

Eli Manning is actually throwing catchable balls.

Jeremy Shockey is actually holding on to them. That was always his liability. He had great virtues as a receiver, but, sadly, successfully receiving a thrown ball was not among them. (Yeah, I know he's a tight end.)

Every play I scream "put in Brandon Jacobs" because I love watching him smash into people with abandon. But these screams are a little dampened by Tiki Barber scampering 8, 12, or 15 yards every few runs.

And Gibril Wilson is just fun, because he hits like a sonofabitch despite his small size. And his name is close to "Gerbil," which is fun to say.

Meanwhile, there's the Packers, the Lions, the Chargers, the Ravens, etc.

Friggin' Cowboys.

Losing by one point. And to the Washington Redskins. That's adding insult to injury.

Hmmmm...let's put this through the Dowdifier™

Every play I scream "put in Brandon Jacobs" because I love...him...with abandon.

Perfect. Send that puppy to the New York Times

Posted by: Maureen Dowd on September 20, 2005 01:17 PM

Weak schedule, too.

The concensus seems to be that special teams and defense will carry the team until Manning gets up to speed. That's the sort of concensus you hear when the team sucked so badly last year that the NFL had to line up some patsies this year.

I don't care, though. You Giant fans have had some poor luck and deserve to see some wins.

Posted by: spongeworthy on September 20, 2005 01:17 PM

The Ravens will rise again.

Posted by: The Raven on September 20, 2005 01:26 PM

As a transplanted Packer fan in MN, I'm just going to have to content myself with the schadenfreude this season every time I hear about what an disasterous decision getting rid of Randy Moss was for the Vikings.

Posted by: Tony B on September 20, 2005 01:27 PM

Just because I almost never get to say this...
The Bengals are undefeated!

Posted by: Ken on September 20, 2005 01:30 PM

I don't think the Viking's problems are due to the loss of Randy Moss, unless he plays offensive tackle in his spare time.

Sorry, Ace, but the Giants are under a major curse for stealing a home game from the Saints, thus having nine for the year. And they did look pretty good, but they are doomed, doomed, doomed.

Posted by: Chris Smith on September 20, 2005 01:39 PM

Man, this is bullshit. Where is the Rockstar INXS pre-finale thread?

Bullshit.

Posted by: Bill from INDC on September 20, 2005 01:42 PM

ACE! Isn't this about the time Johnny Coldcuts should come forward with his Super Bowl picks?

I got a gambling jones, and baby needs a new pair of shoes....

Easterbrook's TMQ column still exists. He's at NFL.com now.

Posted by: jamie r. on September 20, 2005 01:43 PM

I hate you and yours stupid Giants... and the retards on my Saints team, and our tight-end who seems to have an allergic reaction to the ball.

Posted by: ken on September 20, 2005 01:45 PM

Dallas had about a million chances to put that game away in the second half and they couldn't do it.

I hope they learned a lesson.

Posted by: Brandon on September 20, 2005 01:47 PM

Sorry, Slublog. Hey, broken clock is right twice a decade.

I was just as surprised as everyone that the Skins pulled that one out last night. Frickin' insane. And very, very delicious.

Still, I have no hopes for my Redskins. Now, for my Bears. . . this is definitely looking like a good year for them. Not because they're all that great, but because with the collapse of the Vikings they now have the weakest division in the NFC. The Lions are a joke, and Brett Favre is held together by spit, bale wire, and calcified deposits of painkillers.

Personally, I still think the biggest story this weekend was the Pats loss. Momentary misstep, or beginning of decline? Discuss.

Cheers,
Dave at Garfield Ridge

Posted by: Dave at Garfield Ridge on September 20, 2005 01:48 PM

Having suffered through the Snyder era, and understanding that come October, the Redskins will likely resume sucking and getting their asses kicked, I have to say this now.

No, Slublog, not just by one point. Down thirteen points with under five minutes to go IN THE GAME, and to that point, NO Redskins OFFENSE WHATSOEVER.

Fourth and fifteen? Touchdown, baby. Bad Coverage!
Cowboys give the ball back due to an untimely penalty.
Seventy yard oh so pretty touchdown. SAME BAD COVERAGE!
Cowboys get the ball back TWICE. Zilch.

Did you see the post-game press conference with Parcells? Nobody wanted to ask him a question.

72-0 with a 13 or more point lead at any time in the fourth quarter? Nope, 72-1, bay-bee!

The rest of the season may suck, but this was a nice five minutes...

Posted by: Harry Callahan on September 20, 2005 01:53 PM

I want to gloat while I still can - Bengals have a better record than the Patriots! Take that, you mofos!

I also love me some Big Ben, but it's an abusive relationship, and I know he's going to make me cry again. But until then, you go, kid. You go.

Posted by: mary on September 20, 2005 01:53 PM

As a transplanted Packer fan in MN

I feel your pain! But take comfort in the fact the Viqueens suck so bad the Purple Penis Eater fans should leave you alone! But, if you like any NFC North team you're in for a long year. Lets be honest.

Posted by: BrewFan on September 20, 2005 01:53 PM

No, Slublog, not just by one point. Down thirteen points with under five minutes to go IN THE GAME, and to that point, NO Redskins OFFENSE WHATSOEVER.

The pain was terrible. Couldn't believe it.

Salt in the wounds. I didn't stick around for the post-game crap.

Posted by: Slublog on September 20, 2005 01:54 PM

"Brett Favre is held together by spit, bale wire, and calcified deposits of painkillers"

Ha! You pathetic Bears fans would sell your shriveled up souls to have this Man Among Men on your team!

Memo to the Dallas Cowboys:

If you're going to lose like pussies, don't make me stay up so damn late to watch it.

Thank you

Posted by: Dave in Texas on September 20, 2005 02:03 PM

I have loathed the Giants since the hex inducing words 'wide right' were uttered oh those many years ago. May they always suck.

That goes for the Skins as well and as for the Cowb**s, I can't even bring myself to utter their cursed names. A pox on the houses of all those who are fans of those teams.

Posted by: Defense Guy on September 20, 2005 02:15 PM

If you're going to lose like pussies, don't make me stay up so damn late to watch it.

Also, don't lose to the Redskins next time.

That just hurts.

Posted by: Jeff Larkin on September 20, 2005 02:24 PM

You are all very lucky. We 49er fans have to suffer through yet another 2-14 season while trying to remember what it was like to be a contender.

The only thing that makes it bearable is beating the Rams. Mike Martz is the world's biggest sphincter.

Ready for maximum pain.

I'm not a Vikings guy, but I live in Minnesota amongst the purple hordes, and the Vikes got manhandled by the frigging Bengals. I mean, the next step down is to get mugged by the local Girl Scout troop.

But what else can be expected of a team whose coach has a sideline scalping tickets and whose best player was a showboating doofus who left the team for greener pastures last year?

The Cheeseheads are going to be insufferable this year.

Posted by: Monty on September 20, 2005 03:01 PM

The biggest problem with the Giants' D the last few years has been injuries. But of course, that could happen again this year (knock on wood).

Slublog, how the hell did you become a Cowboys fan in Maine!? Shouldn't you be another long-suffering (and now insufferable) Pats fan?

Speaking of which, John Fox is good.

I was born in Victoria, Texas and lived in the state on and off as a kid. When I started to love football, it was the age of Tom Landry and Tony Dorsett.

Posted by: Slublog on September 20, 2005 05:11 PM

Friggin' Cowboys.

Goddamn them.

Assholes.

Get burned by the deep ball...year after year...after year.

I wish I didn't give a big rat's ass.

But I do.

Fuck me to tears.

Posted by: WindRider95 on September 20, 2005 05:23 PM

The Skins game yesterday went from being yet one more depressing notch in the ever-lengthening trail of failure and disgrace that follows in the wake of Dan Snyder to being THE GREATEST FUCKING FOOTBALL GAME, EVER. PERIOD.

Oh how those painful memories of last year's Skins-Cowboys games remain burnt into my mind like a Double-R cattle brand...that last second freak touchdown pass...on top of the record of pathetic losing we'd amassed against the Hated Cowboys since the end of the first Gibbs era.

Hey Dave at Garfield Ridge: that Parcells press conference afteward was particularly delightful, agreed?

Go figure: I finally move to Chicago and the Redskins start winning again. And I don't even have to worry about the wheels falling off next week! 'Cause we don't play! Oh well. I'm sure we'll return to awfulness two weeks from now. In fact, quite frankly we never left that zone. The last four minutes of last night's game notwithstanding, our offense has set a new low for futility.

Posted by: Jeff B. on September 20, 2005 05:30 PM

sorry, but bad news for the rest of the league.

the colts have a defense.

it's all over but the shoutin'

Posted by: moflicky on September 20, 2005 06:28 PM

sorry, but bad news for moflicky:

This year, the Chiefs have a defense, too. And last year they beat the Colts without one. Don't make your Super Bowl reservations quite yet...

...And as for all of you whining about how disappointed you are in your teams, well, it's been thirty-five years since the Chiefs went to a Super Bowl. So, rest assured, we in KC aren't making our Super Bowl room reservations quite yet, either.

Still, it ain't over 'till it's over. And we owe Peyton some payback...

Posted by: Wes S. on September 20, 2005 11:39 PM

...and what the heck happened to the Colt offense. Only 17 pts/game???

Posted by: Nathan on September 21, 2005 01:15 AM

The Packers have plenty of time to pull it out. They should've beat the Browns, except for two blown plays on defense. Given the suckitude of the rest of the NFC North, the Pack is only a game (and a tie-breaker) out of 1st place.

They can still win the division, and lose yet another playoff game at Lambeau :-( At least this time it prolly won't be to the Vikings...

They do, however, have a plan for protecting the savage criminals from the citizens: The citizens must STAY CALM and not get angry and not share videos of citizens being attacked by savage criminals.
