Thats both true and untrue. Germany is trying to send aid to the United States for Hurricane Katrina victims, but its being held up by U.S. Red Tape. (More of Same...and I thought they got rid of resume fraud "Brownie") But Germany is long past its imperialistic period. Now the United States is learning the error of that way....lol

I was an exchange student in Germany. If anything, middle-aged middle class Germans are still suffering from assertiveness-phobia, which allows the French to set the agenda.

Younger Germans, born well after WWII, are starting to question this and promote Germany's position as the economic engine of Europe. I say, they should go for it. Germans may seem anti-American at times, because they need to establish themselves as separate from us, but they aren't really.

My take on the French is that they are really anti-American, so I welcome competition from Germany in European politics.
