Referendum? What Referendum?

Gay marriage approved by California Legislature:

In 2000, 61 percent of voters approved Proposition 22, a statute which states that "only marriage between a man and a woman is valid or recognized in California."

Leno's legislation doesn't change Proposition 22, but overturns a law passed by the Legislature in the 1970s that defines marriage as between a man and a woman.

Leno argues that Proposition 22 should be narrowly interpreted, meaning that it only bans California from recognizing same-sex marriages from out of state, but not from allowing them within California.

Opponents say Proposition 22 applies to all marriages.

Holgate said that if for some reason Schwarzenegger decides to sign the same-sex marriage bill into law, it would be immediately challenged in court. Opponents argue that only the people – not the Legislature – can change a ballot measure approved by voters.

Does anybody else find it ironic that this may eventually be settled by Judicial fiat after all?

Given the events of the last week, I just find this stupid and unimportant.

Posted by: Rightwingsparkle on September 7, 2005 11:23 AM

I disagree. There are only so many things that can be written about Katrina, and most of us have cover the bulk of the possibilities.

There is other news, and it shouldn't be embargoed just because there is a huge story.

Yes like Bagdad jane cancelling her bus tour, I am so bumbed, all these rotten eggs and now what do I do.

Posted by: River Rat on September 7, 2005 11:31 AM

I didn't mean that telling the story was stupid, I meant that the desire of these people to push same sex marriage into society was stupid considering what we are going through.

I would NEVER question your telling of a story ACE!!!

;-)

Leno argues that Proposition 22...only bans California from recognizing same-sex marriages from out of state...

I wonder if that's what the people thought they were voting on in 2000.

What a dick.

DEMOCRACY IS EVIL

Posted by: Democratic Voter on September 7, 2005 11:48 AM

RWS,

Well, it wasn't me who posted it, it was LauraW.

I guess I need to have some sort of way to more clearly note who's writing what. It always says it at the endline, but people don't seem to notice that.

Posted by: ace on September 7, 2005 11:53 AM

Well, I would never question LauraW's decision to post a story either!!!!!

Posted by: Rightwingsparkle on September 7, 2005 11:57 AM

Resistance is futile! You will be assimilated!

Posted by: The Borg on September 7, 2005 12:08 PM

This should surprise no one. Anything they can't get done with the approval of the voters, they ram down our throats anyway.

Democracy in action.

What is it going to take to get the LLMSM focused back on the Rove/Plame story?

I mean, I can't get enough of that.

Posted by: Dave in Texas on September 7, 2005 01:01 PM

Forget Rove/Plame. Don't you miss CINDY???

Posted by: Rightwingsparkle on September 7, 2005 01:03 PM

Well, kinda, but remember she was right up the road from me so I got all that super-keen local coverage you guys missed out on.

Posted by: Dave in Texas on September 7, 2005 01:08 PM

According to a news story I heard this morning, Governor Arnold says this should be decided by the courts, i.e. not the people and not the legislature.

Posted by: OCBill on September 7, 2005 02:17 PM

Yes like Bagdad jane cancelling her bus tour...

Damn. I was hoping to spend some quality time "in the oil" with some hot moonbat babes.

What the hell is it here in California that keeps electing people to state offices who hold the will of the electorate in open contempt. Or feel only a small subset of the voters are actually qualifed to hold an opinion? Why do Californians keep accepting this treatment? Do the rich ultraliberals have that much power to control elections. Given the outrageously gerrymandered districts here, I suppose they do.

Posted by: epobirs on September 7, 2005 02:36 PM

Leno tried to totally screw up our 3 Strikes Law, he blocks any get tough on sex offender bills, including stay aways from schools and parks for pedos. For some reason, they refuse to pass a law against necrophilia in this state. The last outrage involved county morgue workers caught on tape having sex with the body of a 6 year old girl. Again, they tried to enact a law but Leno blocked it. Can you imagine losing your child and on top of it finding out the body was desecrated and it goes unpunished?

As to why these asshats keep getting elected, it's because of gerrymandering. My district has no historical or geological relationship. It looks like a piece of spaghetti as do several of the other districts.

*gag* *choke*

This is too grotesque for even me to make a snarky quip about, and I'm willing to make heartless snide remarks about almost anything.

You'd have to ask Hugh Hewitt. He's the one that told California conservatives that Arnold would govern like a conservative.

What the hell is it here in California that keeps electing people to state offices who hold the will of the electorate in open contempt. Well, you've got to remember this is California we're talking about here. After all, how bad is it to have the opinions of 20 million most of whom are nut cases over turned by the legislature who are totally nuts. Now in most state this would be a travesty, but in California who cares? Nuts is nuts.

Posted by: on September 7, 2005 07:30 PM

Two thirds of those nuts voted to define marriage as that between a man and woman. Arnie just announced he would veto the bill. Don Meyers foiled again!

Posted by: on September 7, 2005 09:02 PM

Friend, I promise you it wouldn't go unpunished.

Posted by: digitalbrownshirt on September 7, 2005 09:12 PM

"Friend, I promise you it wouldn't go unpunished."

My thoughts exactly. I'd bring to life that Grisham novel A Time to Kill.

Posted by: BrewFan on September 7, 2005 09:19 PM

Arnold vetoed the bill, as he should. The same Dem assembly just passed a bill allowing drivers licenses for illegal aliens, which he'll veto also. The only thing the Dem assembly is going to accomplish is raising Arnold's poll numbers, HA!

They've also been throwing hissy fits over Arnold's support for a ballot measure that requires tough tracking of sexual offenders (another sure winner with the voters). Carole Migden, the assemblydyke from SF, actually said that such issues were too complicated for voters & should be handled by the assembly. Typical liberal elitism!

Predictably, Sully is off his meds, railing that the "intent" of Prop 22 was to ban out-of-state marriages. What a stupid idiot.

Posted by: beautifulatrocities on September 8, 2005 01:53 PM

In California, the legislature (mostly Democratic) has a history of overturning public votes, especially on guns, taxes and smoking. Then they wonder why we threw out so many with term limits.

Posted by: Jeff on September 8, 2005 08:24 PM

Now-now, they have a right to do this after al it is their state. The rest of us just live here. /s

Posted by: SporkLift Driver on September 9, 2005 12:03 PM

Leave it to the legislature of california to vote for gay marrage but drag their big fat feet when it comes to a economy and budget
