Margaret Cho: Still Not FunnyEven a liberal-leaning critic thinks her new act sucks: I'm neither a liberal nor a conservative, but, after watching Assassin, I can understand why this country is so polarized. The divisions between the far right and the far left are so deep and wide as to be unbridgeable. Cho's monologue radiates hatred and bitterness towards those who do not share her convictions. She gets applause, ovations, and laughs, but it's important to remember that those in the audience share her views. (In fairness, I should mention that it's just as offensive to watch an arch conservative give a lengthy speech. I can't endure more than about 10 minutes of Rush Limbaugh's pontificating before I have to change the station.) Thanks to Slublog, whose site is back up. posted by Ace at 06:32 PM
CommentsYup. Once I get my site going again, the gravy train ends. Posted by: Slublog on August 30, 2005 06:41 PM
Looked at the pictures at the linked review. Hmmm. Yep, guess I'd hit it. Does that make me a bad person ? Posted by: Carl in N.H. on August 30, 2005 06:50 PM
Awwwww, innit cute how she's dressed up like SLA-brainwashed Patty Hearst on the cover? Remember, kids, terrorism is chic. Posted by: Sean M. on August 30, 2005 06:55 PM
Now, Ace, as a gay man, you know that Cho WAS funny. Kidding... Posted by: Aaron of Lifelike Pundits on August 30, 2005 06:57 PM
I seem to be the only guy who can't access my own frickin' site. Criminy... Posted by: Slublog on August 30, 2005 07:01 PM
My site's down too. There's been a DoS attack on the hosting service I use. DoS attackers must die, preferably by being drawn and quartered. We will assume that everyone's "you should move your blog to the service WE use, it's the cheapest and never has suffered a DoS attack or gone down for any reason whatsoever!" comments have already been made. Posted by: Andrea Harris on August 30, 2005 07:07 PM
I don't think comedy is paying off for Cho. I think that's the only thing that can explain why she's become a starving artist. Oh and Ace, you site is really slow. You getting DOSed again? Posted by: Iblis on August 30, 2005 07:08 PM
I think it's one of the sites he links to in his sidebar. Hostmatters (a server lots of blogs are on, including mine) is offline while they isolate a server that's been DoS'd. They have an emergency forum, if anyone is interested. Posted by: Andrea Harris on August 30, 2005 07:18 PM
Now, Ace, as a gay man, you know that Cho WAS funny. Margaret Cho was a gay man? Posted by: John from WuzzaDem on August 30, 2005 07:31 PM
To paraphrase Dean Wormer: Fat, unfunny, and stupid is no way to go through life. (OK, she's not fat anymore, but two out of three ain't bad.) Posted by: zetetic on August 30, 2005 07:32 PM
Holy crap! That is a LOT of weight loss in a little while. In fact, I didn't know it was possible to lose so much so fast. Wasn't that Madison Square Garden performance not all that long ago? Backstory...? Posted by: S. Weasel on August 30, 2005 07:47 PM
I love that little sop to the moonbats in the audience ("I can't endure more than about 10 minutes of Rush Limbaugh's pontificating before I have to change the station") as if Cho and Rush were at all similar. Like him or not, Limbaugh isn't a rhetorically-stunted, logically sloppy America-hating, no-talent hag-wench. But hey, whatever lets the guy sleep at night, more power to him. Cheers, Posted by: Dave at Garfield Ridge on August 30, 2005 08:12 PM
He's probably right that Cho's new act isn't funny, but this line: In the end, it all feels too mean-spirited to be humorous.makes me want to distrust his entire sense of humor. As for Cho, her first concert film had a few moments that were hilarious, mostly the sex jokes about the gay guys she hangs out with. I have a co-worker who went to see her perform a couple months ago and told me, "I'm not crazy about her sex jokes, but I like her political and racial stuff." I told her that I felt pretty much the exact opposite way about Cho. Posted by: Alex on August 30, 2005 08:15 PM
"I'm not crazy about her sex jokes, but I like her political and racial stuff." Heh. You know what I like about Cho? Her pauses, moments of silence, and exits. Cheers, Posted by: Dave at Garfield Ridge on August 30, 2005 08:30 PM
She used to have some good stuff, but it was all premised on her imitation of her mother, a kinda old-world, heavily accented little old asain lady - the joke rarely in what she said, more in her over-the-top stereotype delivery. Ok to laugh at cause it came from her, but would've got a non-asian crucified. Now it seems she's going for the approval/recognition laugh from politically like minded people - comic hackville. Reminds me of the 2nd time I saw Louis Black perform. The first time was at a small comedy club, and the guy just killed. I thought it was one of the funniest acts I'd ever seen. The 2nd time was shortly after the 2004 election, and the man was so pissed off about his guy losing that his entire act was based around Republican and Christian bashing. My friend and I left before it was even over. It was so bad that not even the lefties were laughing, but instead simply applauding their approval of his politics. Nothing like a New York Jew telling us rubes in the heartland what we really think and believe. Can you imagine if the roles were reversed and a Christian comedian from Columbus, Ohio sat up on stage and generalized about the Jewish faith? I don't think it'd go over so well. In fact, I'm quite sure Mr. Black would charge antisemitism. Posted by: The Warden on August 30, 2005 09:08 PM
No, seriously. Would anyone else hit it ? Anyone ? Aw, c'mon, I can't be the only one here.

That is, if she wouldn't freak out after she finds out I'm a Bush voter and all. Posted by: Carl in N.H. on August 30, 2005 09:47 PM
I suppose I could bring along a couple cases of Twinkies. That would keep her around for a while, might even get the ol' motor revving for her right there. Posted by: Carl in N.H. on August 30, 2005 09:54 PM
...and if she still can't get past my Bush voter-ness, I bet all those Twinkies will distract her long enough for me to finish my business. Posted by: Carl in N.H. on August 30, 2005 09:55 PM

Dude, you need serious help. Plus, you're going to need something stronger. Like Boston Creme Rolls or Swiss Cakes. Posted by: Slublog on August 30, 2005 10:11 PM
And some clothespins to hold up the extra skin flopping around her gut. Posted by: lauraw on August 30, 2005 10:12 PM
lauraw, I think you're mixing Cho up with a Kalahari Bushman. You're right about the need for clothespins, though. I used to date a San chick from the Kalahari once. It was great for a while, but after the romance wore off, she would get going at me full speed in the click language, and she sounded like Flipper. Posted by: Carl in N.H. on August 30, 2005 10:37 PM
From the review: "This kind of "shock comedy" often does not play well when recorded. " I don't know. Seemed to work for Richard Pryor and Eddie Murphy. Course, they were comedians. Posted by: Bill Peschel on August 30, 2005 10:55 PM
I get so tired of these twits who like to think they're politically neutral. He recites the mantra: I'm neither a liberal nor a conservative But earlier, he admits: Even those who agree with every one of Cho's positions (and I agree more often than I disagree)... OK, so if you agree with a lefty moonbat like Cho more than you disagree, that MAKES YOU A FREAKIN LIBERAL, DOESN'T IT?? I mean, c'mon people, this isn't rocket science. And no, I wouldn't hit it. Thank you for asking. Posted by: OregonMuse on August 30, 2005 11:07 PM
Dude's a dern good movie reviewer, though. Best on the web, IMHO. Posted by: Slublog on August 30, 2005 11:13 PM
Berardinelli is a great reviewer, but Ace missed the key review of Assassin. The Village Voice is on f-ing fire: Bisexual Korean American comedian Margaret Cho continues to damage the struggle of bisexual Korean American comedians fighting for the right to be gay and funny, gay married and funny, or straight, funny, and just a li'l bit gay, primarily by being mostly unfunny. Assassin is the listless signature on her career-long comedic suicide note. The Notorious one sure is a fierce competitor, though. Endurance? Commitment? Please, homegirl makes Lance Armstrong look like a pussy. LIVESTRONG? Try standing in front of a crowd for 80 minutes with her material and we'll see who deserves their own rubber bracelet. Am I the only person who cannot tolerate this woman's comedy bits? I feel like this woman would be more suited for rambling on at the dinner table then on stage claiming to be a comedian. Ellen is a comedian. Steve Martin is a comedian. 80 minutes of Cho?,..please hand me a good book and a stiff drink cause this is going to be painful. Posted by: Jman on September 4, 2005 05:12 PM

What is the UK Regime's plan for protecting the citizens from the savage criminals they've foisted on the populace? They offer NONE. They do, however, have a plan for protecting the savage criminals from the citizens: The citizens must STAY CALM and not get angry and not share videos of citizens being attacked by savage criminals. The public keeps saying "protect us from the foreign savages you have imported against our wishes and over our objections" and the UK branch of The Regime keeps proposing plans to protect the foreign savages from the public. Soclose to what the public is demanding, just, you know, the complete opposite. Just a thought: Maybe you wouldn't have to worry about the public attacking the savage criminals if you actually introduced a plan to protect the public from the savage criminals. Maybe they wouldn't feel as if it was necessary for them to protect the public through self-help.
