Interesting: A Debunking of the Kitty Genovese Legend

If you don't know, in 1964 a woman was brutally stabbed to death in Queens and none of the 38 witnesses to the crime (most living in the same apartment complex) bothered helping her or even calling the police.

That, at least, has been the accepted wisdom, courtesy of the The New York Times. And, gee willickers, much of that original account may be wrong. I'm so glad the Times doesn't lower itself to covering the city it's based in any longer.

Not sure how much of this is true, but this guy thinks the Kitty Genovese Horror has been greatly exaggerated.

For one thing, someone did call the cops, during the stabbing, when she was still alive.

Thanks to the acid-keyboard of Andrea Harris.

And yes, the story's old, and the debunking's old too. Dave, get off my tits for like five minutes and let me breathe, man!

Get out! The "Kitty Genovese syndrome" is even taught in sociology classes, for Goodness sake! Now I find out that the "facts" were misreported?

Next thing you'll tell me that the NY times does not want any cheap or tawdry stores with poor folk soiling its new building.

Of far greater concern is the New York Times lack of investigation into the murder of Kitty Genovese's contemporary, Professor Backwards, where dozens of New Yorkers ignored his repeated cries of "Pleh! Pleh!"

Cheers,
Dave at Garfield Ridge

P.S. Ace, if you source my reference, I'll never bust your balls again. This week.

Don't be ashamed, Ace, I didn't know myself until a few months ago; I thought the story of horrible uncaring urbanites was true like everyone else did. I found out via Kathy Shaidle. (You'll have to scroll down; the archives are a little off.)

Dave,

Duh. Chevy Chase, SNL, first season.

They got hate mail for that.

Hey, just checking Ace. I figured you'd know it, but remember that plenty of your "readers" are under the age of 18.

You know, like your dates.

Cheers,
Dave at Garfield Ridge

Damn, I just busted your balls there, right after I promised not to bust your balls if you got the source right. Sorry, bad habit.

You should always remember never to trust a blogger with bourbon in his belly.

What is the UK Regime's plan for protecting the citizens from the savage criminals they've foisted on the populace? They offer NONE. They do, however, have a plan for protecting the savage criminals from the citizens: The citizens must STAY CALM and not get angry and not share videos of citizens being attacked by savage criminals.
The public keeps saying "protect us from the foreign savages you have imported against our wishes and over our objections" and the UK branch of The Regime keeps proposing plans to protect the foreign savages from the public. Soclose to what the public is demanding, just, you know, the complete opposite.
Just a thought: Maybe you wouldn't have to worry about the public attacking the savage criminals if you actually introduced a plan to protect the public from the savage criminals. Maybe they wouldn't feel as if it was necessary for them to protect the public through self-help.
