The Big Nothing: NYT Columnist Dubs Wilson-Plame Non-Scandal "Nadagate"

Libertarian-leaning John Tierney wants to know what all this is about, and (by implication) why his own employer won't shut the f' up about it.

And can we fer Chrissakes please get some other suffix besides -gate to describe the scandal du jour? thisgate, thatgate, whatevergate. Retire this lame appellation once and for all.

Posted by: Monty on July 18, 2005 02:26 PM

Monty, they won't, because for the press, Watergate represents the shining moment of their existence, their entire reason for being.

Of course, look beyond the Watergate mythos and you see shoddy reporting and, as we now know, a highly anti-Nixon source, but don't let those minor details make you lose faith in the American media.

You're right Slub, EVERYTHING is about frickin Watergate.

Or Vietnam.

The reaction from the MSM when they realized they were bamboozled by Wilson was so ho-hum they were willing to drag him back from obscurity to scream for Rove's head... never occurred to them that someone might say "uh, he's the liar, remember"?

EVERYTHING is about frickin Watergate.

Yes it is. It really was nothing more than a hissy fit by 'gotcha journalists who had tried to destroy Nixon for decades out of pure Liberal malice, about the only thing that Liberals do much better than conservatives.

I am always surprised when I ask Liberals what, exactly, was it that Nixon did that was so bad? Most say he ordered the break-in of the Watergate hotel, which he did not do. He didn't even know they were going to do it and said so quite candidly on the transcripts of the White House tapes. All that he actually did do, was to try to cover up the break in after his "plumbers" were caught. But the truth and the facts are never important to Liberals, only their personal hatred and prejudice.

The left hated Nixon for nailing Alger Hiss. Ask a lib who he was and they usually say "huh"?

EVERYTHING is about frickin Watergate

More right than you know. My undergraduate degree is in journalism - Watergate was the subject we spent more time on than anything in history of mass comm, with the requisite snide remarks about Nixon included.

Even journalists who had no role to play in the reporting of the scandal (read: ALL of my teachers), felt as though they were part of something 'larger than themselves' just for hating Nixon.

It was an easy club to join, I guess.

Slublog

I've asked before to no avail but I'll ask again:

what does slublog mean?

Posted by: on July 19, 2005 12:13 PM

Sorry if you've asked before and I didn't notice.

Slublog is a play on an internet name I've used for years - Slubgob. The name Slubgob is a character from C.S. Lewis' "The Screwtape Letters," one of my favorite books.

Reform are basically wiping Labour out in the North. It's not a defeat. It's not even a rout. Labour are simply ceasing to exist.

Nick Lowles
@lowles_nick

Tonight’s results are calamitous for Labour. Not just for Keir Starmer's leadership, but for the very future of the party
STARMERGEDDON: In early returns, Reform gains 135 seats, Labour loses 90, the Fake Conservatives lose 36 (and I didn't even know they could fall any further), the Lib Dems lose 4, and the Greens gain 6. Note that the only other party gaining seats is the Greens and they're only gaining a handful of seats.
Update: Reform now up 145, Labour down 98.
Labour projected to lose Wales -- where they've ruled for 27 years.
Fulton County Georgia just discovered 400 boxes of ballots for Labour
Update: REF +156, LAB -107, CON -45
Brutal: In four out of five council seats where Labour is defending, they've lost. 80%.
I'm sure it's not this simple, but Reform is straight taking Labour's and the "Conservatives'" seats. They've lost almost exactly what Reform gained. If understand this right (and warning, I probably don't), all of London's council seats are up for election, and Labour might lose hugely there, as their old voters abandon them for Reform, Muslim Indenpendents, and the Greens.
REF +190, LAB -134, CON -56.
Updates on the Labour collapse in council elections -- which wags are calling #Starmergeddon -- from Beege Welborne. There are about 5000 seats up for grabs, Labour is expected to lose 1,800, Reform will probably gain 1,580, up from... zero. So this would be more than that.
People claim that while Labour has adopted the Sharia Agenda to appeal to the million Muslims it allowed to migrate to the country, those voters are ditching Labour to vote for the Muslim Independent Party or the Greens. Delicious. This shadenfreude is going straight to my thighs.
Oh, and if Starmer loses about as badly as expected, Labour will toss him out of a window Braveheart style and replace him. He will announce he is resigning to spend more time with his Gay Ukrainian Male Prostitutes.
Media bias and senationalism are as old as, well, the media:
spidermanthreatormenace.jpg

That was written by Denny O'Neill and illustrated by, get this, Frank Miller. Editor to the Stars Jim Shooter was in charge at the time.
I always thought the gag was original to the comic book, but in fact the "Threat or Menace" headline was a satirical joke about media bias and sensationalism for a long while. The Harvard Lampoon used it in a parody of Life magazine: "Flying Saucers: Threat or Menace?"

Leftists who have been drawing Frankendistricts for decades are suddenly upset about Republican line-drawing
Socialist usurper Obama cut commercials urging Virginians to vote for the bizarre "lobster" gerrymander -- but now says gerrymanders are so racist you guys
Obama is complaining about the new Louisiana map -- but here's the thing, the new map has much more compact and rational borders than the old racial gerrymander map
Pete Bootyjudge is whining too. But here's the Illinois gerrymander he supports.
Big Bonus! Under the new Florida congressional map, Debbie Wasserman Schultz will probably lose her seat
And she can't even go on The View because she's ugly a clump of stranger's hair in the bath-drain

ANOTHER LEFT WING ASSASSIN ATTEMPTS TO KILL TRUMP
If I understand this, the left-wing Democrat assassin attempted to get into the White House Correspondents Association dinner, and was stopped at the magnetometers, which detected his gun. I guess he pulled out the gun and was shot by Secret Service agents.
Erika Kirk was present.
