"Lipstick Lesbian" Rips OBL, Radical Imams

Osama bin Ladin and a lipstick lesbian in the same story. Honestly, I'd have to link it even if it wasn't very good. But it is pretty interesting:

No wonder Irshad Manji has received death threats since appearing on British television: she is a lipstick lesbian, a Muslim and scourge of Islamic leaders, whom she accuses of making excuses about the terror attacks on London. Oh, and she tells ordinary Muslims to “crawl out of their narcissistic shell”. Ouch.

Manji is a glamorous Canadian television presenter whose book, The Trouble with Islam, has made her so famous in America that she won something called the Oprah Winfrey Chutzpah award. Even at a conference in Oxford last week she felt unsafe — despite extra security — with police sifting through “disgusting e-mails” and threats after her appearance on Newsnight.

Doesn’t the violent Muslim minority show Islam is flawed? “I ask myself the same question,” she grimaces. Far from regarding Muslims as oppressed they have a “supremacy complex — and that’s dangerous”. This, she contends, is true even among moderates. “Literalists” who consider the Koran the “perfect manifesto of God” have taken over the mainstream; and far from misreading Islam, as Tony Blair and the Muslim Council of Britain insist, terrorists can find encouragement for murder in the Koran.

Perfect point. One sad irony I've noticed is that Muslim terror-apologists have two main talking points: 1) the US is "arrogant," and 2) "What you don't understand is..."

I've heard "What you don't understand is..." so many times I could vomit. I'm tired of people simultaneously calling me arrogant and then arrogantly explaining to me what I don't know (which, by the way, I've heard before; I just disagree).

A large part of this insanity is fueled by pathological chauvanism and pan-national cultural jingoism... but not on our side, on theirs. They really do believe they are fated to be the inheritors of the earth, and the fact that the US sits as the 400 pound gorilla in the room that won't give up the banana drives them nuts. They're supposed to be the Masters of the Universe; how can it be that infidels seem to be in that position?

As it would take too long to build up the Islamic world economically and technologically to take the world primacy Islamicists have wet dreams about it, they've decided to take a short-cut: just destroy the people, spirit, and economy of the West. They can't bring themselves up, but they have a chance of bringing us down.

All nations or cultures are infected with chauvanism or jingoism. As a proud American, I don't think that's a bad thing. I feel I have more in common with, say, a chauvanistic German than an American who doesn't like being an American and considers himself a "global citizen." The German and I can spar on whose culture or nation is superior (and I always have those three trump cards of Hitler, the Holocaust, and Dresden), whereas I can't say a damn thing to my nominally-American global citizen pal.

However, when one's racial/ethnic/religious jingoism starts taking the form of bombings and terrorism, you've taken it too far.

The underlying problem with Islam, observes Manji, is that far from spiritualising Arabia, it has been infected with the reactionary prejudices of the Middle East: “Colonialism is not the preserve of people with pink skin. What about Islamic imperialism? Eighty per cent of Muslims live outside the Arab world yet all Muslims must bow to Mecca.” Fresh thinking, she contends, is suppressed by ignorant imams; you can see why she has been dubbed “Osama’s worst nightmare ”.

“The good news,” she insists, “is it doesn’t have to be like this.” She wants a reformation in Islam, returning it to its clever, fun-loving roots. “The world’s first ‘feminist’ was an 11th-century Muslim man. Baghdad had one of the first universities in the 9th century; the Spanish ‘Ole!’ comes from ‘Allah’; Islam even gave us the guitar.”

...

If we are at fault for not encouraging Muslims, they fail to “celebrate the precious gift” of British freedom: “Why do they protest against France for making it illegal to wear hijabs, but not against Saudi Arabia for making it illegal not to wear them?”; more Muslims, she contends, have been killed in recent years by fellow Muslims than by westerners.

...

She excuses Blair glossing over violent aspects of Islam as “he is only trying to divert a backlash against Muslims, bless him” but she despises the Muslim Council for not coming clean. “Even if Muslims are only interested in slick PR, it would be a great move to recognise the problem; it would spread trust. And I am not asking them to do anything Jews and Christians haven’t done.”

....

She denounces terrorism and the response to terrorism, which is not sufficiently robust. It is no good, she argues, for respectable Muslims to say “violence is not the Islamic ideal” if violence has become Islamic practice. And she attacks the proposed religious hatred laws, saying: “Society needs people who offend, otherwise there will be no progress.”

Indeed. But can Manji and her followers provoke Muslims into progress?

I say "Yes."

Lipstick lesbians. Is there anything they can't do?

Nice post - it helps me understand why leftisis find it so easy to condone and defend radical Islam - leftists are also losers trying to pull down winners.

PS - How is Dresden a trump card?

Lipstick Lesbian should always be followed by a picture of said lesbian.

Really, egregiously off topic, but:

Funnay. Make sure to check ou the letters section. A guy was making fun of Tom Cruise because he had panic attacks and takes drugs for them now(much like you Ace).

Max,

Lipstick lesbians. Is there anything they can't do?
Well, there certainly are some things that they don't do.
Posted by: on July 17, 2005 03:34 PM

Some people they don't do...

Posted by: Joan of Argghh! on July 17, 2005 03:46 PM

And when they are doing things/people, contrary to some people's fantasies, they rarely let people watch.

Posted by: on July 17, 2005 04:05 PM

Joan, Technically that's incorrect. The female human has a much more fluid sexuality compared to the male humans. Thus it is possible that when a suitable candidate of the opposite sex appears a previously homosexual female may engage in heterosexual sex.
This often occurs with the participation of the other female and aforementioned male.

ChauvINISM. ChauvINISM. Not chauvANISM. OK?

Post rubbishy right-wing nonsense if you want to. God knows there is enough of it about; what does one more cranky pararoid site matter? But if you're going to froth at the mouth, try learning to spell first, you hairy knuckled idiot.

Posted by: Phil on July 17, 2005 04:43 PM

Phil,

FYI, there should be a hyphen between hairy and knuckled. Please don't make that mistake again.

Posted by: max on July 17, 2005 04:53 PM

I love it. Ol' Phil has no original ideas but he is a wicked speller. Asshat.

Posted by: on July 17, 2005 04:58 PM

Oh go fuck yourself Phil. Why does someone who disagrees with you automatically have to be a hairy knuckled idiot? You just proved the point I was going to post here; the problem with the left today is that in order for their ideas to be valid, they feel the need to invalidate the ideas of others. They are stuck in the zero-sum-game, or, as Covey calls it, "deficiency motivation." And that is precisely the problem with radical Islam (I will NOT say Islam in general, because I have known very open-minded Muslims who could celebrate the achievements of their own culture without feeling the need to blow up mine.)

That's really the rub. They can't get their tiny minds around the concept that it isn't wbout who's right; I can celebrate the greatness of my culture (or cultures, being a typical Heinz 57 American), without feeling the need to tear down someone elses. Radical Islamists actually diminish the achienvements of their culture by needing to destroy our culture in order to make theirs look superior. Leftists want us to believe that we righties are intollerant, but we aren't the ones who have a probem with everybody else's ideas. It's the lefties and Islamists who can't stand the existance of people who dissagree with them.

Get the fuck over yourself and join the club of CIVILIZED people who can celebrate their culture's advantages right along side of people of other cultures who love their own as much as I love mine.

Post rubbishy right-wing nonsense if you want to.

Oh, can he, Phil, pretty please? Is it OK with you?

Do we all have your fucking permission to write what we think, to make arguments, to arrange facts and opinions in ways that criticize you and people you support?

(Did I spell "fucking" right? 'Cause I'd hate to get on Phil's bad side, him having such a razor wit and all.)

Posted by: Phinn on July 17, 2005 05:02 PM

Phil,

I forgot to add "Leftists are fucking losers" you pompous fucking cunt.

Posted by: max on July 17, 2005 05:07 PM

See its trolls like Phil who take a perfectly good lesbian thread and turn it into a flame contest.

I mean for god sakes! LESBIANS you dolt!

But NOOOO. Fine! Since "Phil" insists:

All people are created equal. Not cultures. Western Culture is superior to Muslim culture. Get over your guilt and enjoy the fact that your culture is superior.

Now can we please go back to the truly important discussion of the mating rituals of lesbians. The fate of the world lies in the balance!

Posted by: Iblis on July 17, 2005 05:27 PM

Anything involving lipstick, lesbians, and especially the alliterative combination of the two is newsworthy. I don't think this would go anywhere without the double "l"s

Surprisingly, she's Canadian. What's doubly surprising is that she doesn't seem to have bee4n prosecuted under any silly Canadian "hate-speech" laws for her writing.

I've heard her on several talk radio shows (hint hint, ace) and she's pretty cool. Very good at laying out her case for the reform of Islam.

Posted by: jeff on July 18, 2005 04:08 AM

You'd be surprised at the number of homosexuals who have absolutely no interest in gay "marriage."

Posted by: Megan on July 18, 2005 07:47 AM

fwiw - I gave up on the issue of gay marriage when, 10 years ago, I was roasted on an AOL board for saying "Sure, I'm for gay marriage, so long as if the two get a divorce, one could make the other's life a living hell if they choose to do so.'

Apparently that was way more 'equal' than the gay marriage advocates wanted.

And the answer to Ace's question about Lipstick Lesbians is this: no matter how fleet of foot they are, Lipstick Lesbians can't write their name in the snow

Islam is currently mostly a murderous Satanic Cult and probably always will be. Their history is one of murder, internecine war and conquest amongst themselves and all of their neighbors. Too many Moslems are inherently murderous savages, it comes from the Koran and is as much a part of Islam as is praying five times a day. This fight is the clearest fight between good and evil since 1941.

I wonder how many of you would allow her to have the same civil rights as a hetro would. On this site I doubt any of you would.

And this is relevant how?

For the record, by the way, many conservatives (even religous conservatives) are rather libertarian on gay marriage.

So before you make assumptions, do some homework.

Good comment on Freeper today:

The spiritual tradition of the West, which begins with classic tragedy and continues through St Augustine's Confessions, tells us just the contrary, namely, that one's inner feelings are the problem, not the solution. The West is a construct, the result of a millennium of war against the inner feelings of the barbarian invaders whom Christianity turned into Europeans. Paganism exults in its unchanging, autochthonous character, and glorifies the native impulses of its people; Christianity despises these impulses and attempts to root them out. Western tradition demands that the individual must draw upon something better than one's inner feelings.

What? Skeleton of the most famous Musketeer, D'Artagnan, possibly discovered in Dutch church closet.
Dumas picked four names of real musketeers out of a history book, D'Artagnan, Athos, Aramis, and Porthos. So there was an actual D'Artagnan, though he made most of the story up. (Or, you know, all of it.)*
Charles de Batz de Castelmore, known as d'Artagnan, the famous musketeer of Kings Louis XIII and Louis XIV, spent his life in the service of the French crown.
The Gascon nobleman inspired Alexandre Dumas's hero in "The Three Musketeers" in the 19th century, a character now known worldwide thanks to the novel and numerous film adaptations.
D'Artagnan was killed during the siege of Maastricht in 1673, and there is a statue honoring the musketeer in the city. His final resting place has remained a mystery ever since.

A lot of Dumas's stories are based on bits of real history. The plot of the >Three Musketeers, about trying to recover lost diamonds from the queen's necklace, was cribbed from the then-almost-contemporaneous Affair of the Queen's Necklace. And the Man in the Iron Mask is based on real accounts of a prisoner forced to wear a mask (though I think it was a velvet mask).
* Oh, I should mention, Dumas says all this, about finding the names in an old book, in the prologue to his novel. But authors lie a lot. They frequently present fictions as based on historic fact. The twist is, he was actually telling the truth here. At least about these four musketeers having actually existed and served under Louis XIV.
Fun fact: You know the beginning of A Fistful of Dollars where the local gunslingers make fun of Clint Eastwood's donkey and Eastwood demands they apologize to the donkey? That's lifted from The Three Musketeers. Rochefort mocks D'Artagnan's old, brokedown farm horse and D'Artagnan is incensed.
A commenter asked which should be read first, The Hobbit of LOTR?
Easy, no question -- read The Hobbit first. It's actually the start of the story and comes first chronologically. It sets up some major characters and major pieces in play in LOTR.
Also, the Hobbit is Beginner-Friendly, which LOTR isn't. The Hobbit really is a delightful book, and a fast read. It's chatty, it's casual, it's exciting, and it's funny. In that dry cheeky British humor way. I love that the narrator is constantly making little asides and commentary, like he's just sitting next to you telling you this story as it occurs to him.
LOTR is a very long story. Fifteen hundred pages or so. The Hobbit is relatively short and very punchy and easy to read. If you don't like The Hobbit, you can skip out on LOTR. If you do like it, you'll be primed to read LOTR.
Oh, I should say: The Hobbit is written as if it's for children, but one of those smart children's stories that are also for adults. Don't worry, there's also real fighting and violence and horror in it, too.
LOTR is written for adults. (It's said that Tolkien wrote both for his children, but LOTR was written 17 years later, when his children were adults.) Some might not like The Hobbit due to its sometimes frivolous tone. Me, I love it. I find it constantly amusing. Both are really good but there is a starkly different tone to both. LOTR is epic, grand, and serious, about a world war, The Hobbit is light and breezy, and about a heist. Though a heist that culminates in a war for the spoils.
The Hobbit Challenge: Read two more chapters. I didn't have much time. Bilbo got the ring.
I noticed a continuity problem. Maybe. Now, as of the time of The Hobbit, it was unknown that this magic ring was in fact a Ring of Power, and it was doubly unknown that it was the Ring of Power, the Master Ring that controlled the others.
But the narrator -- who we will learn in LOTR was none of than Bilbo himself, who wrote the book as "There and Back Again" -- says this about Gollum's ring:
"But who knows how Gollum had come by that present [the Ring], ages ago in the old days when such rings were still at large in the world? Perhaps even the Master who ruled them could not have said."
In another passage, the ring is identified as a "ring of power."
I don't know, I always thought there was a distinction between mere magic rings and the Rings of Power created by Sauron. But this suggests that Bilbo knew this was a ring of power created by Sauron.
Now I don't remember when Bilbo wrote the Hobbit. In the movie, he shows Frodo the book in Rivendell, and I guess he wrote it after he left the Shire. I guess he might have added in the part about the ring being a ring of power created by "the Master" after Gandalf appraised him of his research into the ring.
I never noticed this before. I know Tolkien re-wrote this chapter while he was writing LOTR to make the ring important from the start. And also to make Gollum more sinister and evil, and also to remove the part where Gollum actually offers Bilbo the ring as a "present" -- Bilbo had already found it on his own, but Gollum was wiling to give it away, which obviously is not something the rewritten Gollum would ever do.
But I had no memory of the ring being suggested to be The Ring so early in the tale.

The only bad part of the trilogy are the Frodo/Sam chapters in The Two Towers. They're repetitive, slow, and mostly about the weather and terrain. But most everything else is good. Weirdly, the Frodo-Sam chapters in Return of the King are exciting and action-packed and among the best in the trilogy. (Though the chapters with everyone else in Return of the King get pretty slow again. Mostly people talking about marching towards war, and then marching towards war.)
