Zogby Poll: 42% Want Impeachement Hearings If Bush Lied About Iraq War

Sort of surprising... but then not so surprising.

Hell, if Bush consciously lied to get us into war, I'm not quite sure I'd be against impeachment, either.

An awful lot of rosy liberal assumptions are implicit in that if.

I wonder what a poll would reveal were we to have asked, "If President Bill Clinton were to be found to have raped Juanita Broaddrick and hired detectives to stalk and frighten her to keep silent, would you support removal from office?"

I have a feeling that would have crossed the 50% threshold, too. Maybe the 60% threshold.

If.

If if's and but's were candies and nuts, we'd all have a lovely snack.

I like the fact that the left is dwelling on impeachment, though. It leaves them with less time to think of new ways to fuck up the country.

Excerpt of a conversation at DNC HQ:

"The Republicans impeached President Clinton, eventually destroying almost their entire base of support and persuading everyone that the party was out of touch with America. Two years later, they won the White House. If we do the same thing..."

Somebody send the Dems a note: "Consecutive > Causative."

Posted by: Pompous on July 6, 2005 02:54 PM

I guess it all depends on what the meaning of "if" is.

I suspect that the next year will see the Dems throwing all of their rhetorical eggs into the impeachment basket. To mix my metaphors, they will be swinging for the fences. I have a feeling that the Downing Street Memo stuff was a test case - that it hasn't gained much traction yet means only that they will look even harder for smoking guns now.

High risk, high reward strategy, and they will have the media to help carry the water. They might pull it off, especially if they can get some help from al Qaeda or similar terrorist organization. All it will take is one big attack on American soil and the Republicans will lose a lot of their reputation as protectors of the American people.

The problem is that the barrier for Bush to be classed as a liar is mighty low on the left.

lets face it, they think that if Bush claimed something he thought was true, but wasn't, then he's a liar.

If you think Bush claimed something he thought was true, but wasn't then the left would say you know he's a liar.

Furthermore, unless you continue the 'Bush is a liar' mantra, then you are a hypocritical republican who would do anything to protect one of your own.

Unlike of course Bill Clinton who wasn't a liar, despite saying he didn't sleep with Monica, when, you know, he did. But hey, that was lying about something else or something like that.

Posted by: DelphiGuy on July 6, 2005 03:29 PM

If there was a vagina involved we'd have impeachment.

Posted by: on July 6, 2005 03:38 PM

Or lying in a civil suit about vaginas. Or suborning perjury in a civil suit about vaginas.

But whatever.

Posted by: Tongueboy on July 6, 2005 03:44 PM
It leaves them with less time to think of new ways to fuck up the country.

The left spends zero time in that pursuit, as the right has the topic completely covered with surpluses running into the next few decades.

Posted by: on July 6, 2005 03:45 PM

If Bush said Dave in Texas has a blue GMC pick up truck, the left would claim he was a liar.

Posted by: Dave in Texas on July 6, 2005 04:06 PM

"as the right has the topic completely covered "

nO YUo!!!

Posted by: DelphiGuy on July 6, 2005 04:07 PM

Impeachment talk is the best thing that could happen for the GOP. So long as the left is banging their head against a wall trying to convince others that Chimpya McHitlerburton no longer deserves his smirky rodeo ride through world history, the more likely it is that the GOP will again gain seats in the mid-terms. In short, the Dems should be running against the GOP -- not Bush -- as the months move forward. Apparently, they're far too consumed with frustration and hate to develop a plan that might actually exploit the power vacuum left when Bush is through. What mullets.

Let's not forget that this is Zogby running this pole. Most likely, his question was, "Given that President Bush lied about the reason to go to war with Iraq, do you think he should be impeached or executed?" Remember, he was the first to come out on election day and predict a major Kerry victory.

The problem is that the barrier for Bush to be classed as a liar is mighty low on the left.

Whereas y'all bury your heads in the sand and either mutter "I don't see no lies here boss" or invoke the Constanza Defence: "It isn't a lie if he believes it."

Here ya go, hosers---a handy-dandy searchable database, complete with references, with over 260 seperate lies, distortions, and falsehoods from the mouth of Your Glorious and Most Holy Leader.

I have no illusions that you'll read or understand this material, but it gives me something to stuff up your collective asses while your heads are in the sand.

I trust you're hitting the tip-jar.

Donna Meyers. Why don't you list the top two most credible , evidenced back lies in your opinion and lets see what type of intellectual debate you are capable of.

Posted by: Dman on July 6, 2005 05:31 PM

Slublog, ol Don's kinda nasty, isn't he?

Posted by: Dave in Texas on July 6, 2005 05:58 PM

Have you ever noticed that Don Myers always drops in, proclaims his intellectual superiority and then runs away like a scared jackrabbit rather than engage in any sort of discussion?

Posted by: Slublog on July 6, 2005 06:02 PM

Dave, either that or really looking for love in all the wrong places.

Posted by: Slublog on July 6, 2005 06:03 PM

Well, old Donnie did figure out how to click on the link button, so I have to give him credit for at least being smarter than my dog.

Then again, he linked to a site that presents a difference of opinion as a "lie", so I guess it's a wash.

Also, people like my dog.

What is the UK Regime's plan for protecting the citizens from the savage criminals they've foisted on the populace? They offer NONE. They do, however, have a plan for protecting the savage criminals from the citizens: The citizens must STAY CALM and not get angry and not share videos of citizens being attacked by savage criminals.
The public keeps saying "protect us from the foreign savages you have imported against our wishes and over our objections" and the UK branch of The Regime keeps proposing plans to protect the foreign savages from the public. Soclose to what the public is demanding, just, you know, the complete opposite.
Just a thought: Maybe you wouldn't have to worry about the public attacking the savage criminals if you actually introduced a plan to protect the public from the savage criminals. Maybe they wouldn't feel as if it was necessary for them to protect the public through self-help.

Oof. Reviewers do not like Scary Movie 6. The criticism I keep hearing is that the movie mistakes a reference for an actual joke. The movie (they say) keeps Key Jangling a reference to another movie (or some other pop culture ephemera) and you expect there to be a joke but nope, the Key Jangle was the joke. Other reviewers say that the promise that "no lines will be uncrossed" is a fake-out, and that the movie is bland and inoffensively corporate.
Whoops! I posted about Dan Goldman losing the NY congressional primary. He might do that, but it won't be tonight -- the primary isn't held until June 23.
One race to keep an eye on: the Levi's heir nepo baby and egregious "Designated Liar" Dan Goldman -- one of the Democrats from a safe district Democrats send out to spread their most indefensible lies -- may actually lose his lower Manhattan/Brooklyn set due to, get this, antisemitism in the Democrat primary electorate.
Antisemitism? In the anti-Nazi Democrat Party? Sounds crazy, I know, but apparently the anti-Nazi Party wants to eliminate Jews.

Democrat Senator Rueben Gallego, who served his wife with divorce papers when she was nine months pregnant so that he could marry his side-piece, counsels us that we should not judge Graham Platner for his infidelity because these things are personal matters, Racists:

Sahil Kapur
@sahilkapur

Sen. Ruben Gallego, D-Ariz., on Platner: "We know that Graham has lived not your typical political experience. He's been very clear and open with his wife, and they worked through whatever they worked through. At the end of the day, this man has had 60 more town halls than Susan Collins has. He's winning the polls, he's willing to accept that he has grown as a person, and I think we should accept that."

Gallego says the drip-drip of revelations won't harm Platner's campaign.

"I think you guys are all in a bubble here right now. The drip, drip that's actually happening is Americans are really, really hurt the fact that gas is still high, food is still high, they can't buy a home, you can't afford rent. They're not going to care about text messages and everything else like that that happened years ago, especially when it was worked out between spouses."

I like that he says that it's okay that Graham Platner sexted 12 different women within months of marrying the woman to sponge off her because he wasn't then "living a political life" -- the clear meaning being, "We all cheat, we just don't cheat when we're running for office, and he didn't know he was running for office when he was sending dicpics to half the women he ran into."
Except he was running: His own wife turned the sexts over to his campaign.
And obviously Reuben Gallego didn't let his "political life" get in the way of his extramarital dating life:
