There's Progress In Iraq, Says Kofi Annan

I ddin't bother reading this beyond the headline, because really, who cares what Kofi Annan says?

Mickey Kaus thinks that maybe Kofi is just feeling the heat from his oil scams and is trying to appease Bush. And he wonders-- maybe Bush would prefer keeping Kofi Annan as a discredited, and compromised, SecGen.

Except he uses potty-language to express that thought, which I think is pretty classless, really.

Ace,

The link to the Washington Post story has one too many "L"s in the HTML. You've got it as .htmll

I actually read that. He gives the UN a lot of credit for how well things are going.

Kofi is trying to appease Bush and apparently Bush can be bought. I'm afraid that W has a tendency to outsmart himslef sometimes. Trying to make friends with Liberals is like trying to make friends with Moslems. They're both guided by the arab saying that: "the enemy of my enemy is my friend ..." But they always seem to forget the rest of the sentence that says: "until we kill my enemy, at which I sneak up behind my emeny's enemy and behead him, and then we're all the best of friends."

If Kofi's trying to make friends, he should give up taking credit for the good things accomplished by the US, Australia, and other countries (Tsunami relief, freeing Iraq, etc.).

Kofi is claiming a LOT of UN help in Iraq. Funny, I follow the news and blogs very closely, and I haven't seen the UN mentioned in Iraq, except for 35 people who helped organize the elections. I've seen a LOT about them stealing the Iraqis money through oil-for-food, and trying to block the Coalition from freeing the Iraqi people. Maybe he's counting our coalition partners as "the UN".

It was comical to read the UN accounts of how much they did on Tsunami response. They didn't even get on the ground until a month after the Tsunami hit. They were claiming having a logistics center in Banda Aceh that was actually run by the US and Australian militaries. They were busy "plannin and coordinatin" at five-star hotels in Thailand, and writing press releases, making it seem as though they were in charge of the help that was being delivered.

I agree keep Kofi there, just make him wear a clown suit(as befits his dignity). Krusty wouldn't wear a $5,000 tailor made suit, why should Kofi?

You do need to read the article because as others have alluded, according to Kofi, all the progress in Iraq is the result of the UN. Amazingly enough, he manages to avoid mentioning the US role entirely.

It's also comical that he says the reason we don't know what all the UN has done is because, well, they just don't like to toot their own horn.

Such as by writing Washington Post editorials that do nothing else.

Yes, and Koffi's claim that these nations now promising assistance is the turning point for Iraq is crap. It may be the turning point for the UN and it's cronies in Europe; the turning point for Iraq was when the 3rd ID crossed the border headed for Bagdad and the liberation of the Iraqi people.

I've been sayin this ever since we started soft-pedaling on Kofi...

The enemy you know... and that whole schtick. Welcome to 10 months ago kaus.

STARMERGEDDON: In early returns, Reform gains 135 seats, Labour loses 90, the Fake Conservatives lose 36 (and I didn't even know they could fall any further), the Lib Dems lose 4, and the Greens gain 6. Note that the only other party gaining seats is the Greens and they're only gaining a handful of seats.
Update: Reform now up 145, Labour down 98.
Labour projected to lose Wales -- where they've ruled for 27 years.

Updates on the Labour collapse in council elections -- which wags are calling #Starmergeddon -- from Beege Welborne. There are about 5000 seats up for grabs, Labour is expected to lose 1,800, Reform will probably gain 1,580, up from... zero. So this would be more than that.
People claim that while Labour has adopted the Sharia Agenda to appeal to the million Muslims it allowed to migrate to the country, those voters are ditching Labour to vote for the Muslim Independent Party or the Greens. Delicious. This shadenfreude is going straight to my thighs.
Oh, and if Starmer loses about as badly as expected, Labour will toss him out of a window Braveheart style and replace him. He will announce he is resigning to spend more time with his Gay Ukrainian Male Prostitutes.
Media bias and senationalism are as old as, well, the media:

I always thought the gag was original to the comic book, but in fact the "Threat or Menace" headline was a satirical joke about media bias and sensationalism for a long while. The Harvard Lampoon used it in a parody of Life magazine: "Flying Saucers: Threat or Menace?"
