Reporter Thomas Lipscomb on Hoist the Black Flag at 4PM EasternOne of the very few reporters to actually bother covering the Swift Vets' story during the election, and has been a bear on John Kerry's promise (finally satisfied-- we think) to sign the Form 180 releasing all military records. Lipscomb is a favorite of the Powerline boys, and we think he's pretty cool too. We'll be talking with him about Dick Durbin and Linda Foley-- head of the newspaper guild, who claims that the "US military" is targeting journalists "for real" in Iraq. The rest of the media seems "intellectually incurious" about the head of the print newspaper union's unbeleivable charge against our soldiers, but Thomas Lipscomb is very interested indeed, and he's not afraid to say so. He'll never win any popularity contests among his colleagues, but we like him an awful lot. posted by Ace at 03:45 PM
CommentsGood catch. Or "get" I supposed it's called you big important media types. Posted by: TallDave on June 21, 2005 02:13 PM
riiiight... us big media types on internet "Radio." Hee, hee. I'll be a big media type when I have a personal assistant like Dennis Finch on Just Shoot Me. Until then-- I'se gots no illusions. Posted by: ace on June 21, 2005 03:13 PM
I see we're reverting back to the days of old, when Ace's staff to audience ratio was opposite what it is today. :) Posted by: fat kid on June 21, 2005 03:15 PM

Excellent point about the kooky left and its resemblance to the kooky right of the 50s and 60s. (John Birch Society, various conspiracy nuts.) Posted by: slickdpdx on June 21, 2005 04:22 PM

Sound should be better in the last segment. Posted by: Karol on June 21, 2005 04:43 PM
Or worse. Whichever. Posted by: Karol on June 21, 2005 04:47 PM
Linda Foley was commenting that there's not enough outrage on behalf of the US (via the US military) for the reporters being killed in Iraq. What she said is a fact; we do target journalists in other (enemy) countries (IE Al-Jazeera). http://www.cnn.com/WORLD/europe/9904/10/nato.attack.02/ Not only that, but we also fund, arm, and back paramilitary groups in a number of nations that target and assassinate journalists who report on the activities of brutal governments (I.E. El Salvador, Guatemala, Colombia, etc.). Posted by: SethGecko13 on June 21, 2005 04:49 PM
Dana Milbank is a douchebag, and his Washington Post piece was RIDDLED with embarrassing errors and omissions of fact. Why wouldn't the republicans let Conyers have any of the open rooms? Riddle yourself that. What's "nonsense" about world leaders violating international law (not to mention the Constitution) to send to war? Posted by: SethGecko13 on June 21, 2005 04:59 PM
Conyers was the Chairman of the House Government Operations Committee from 1988 to 1994. He's SUPPOSED to be called "Chairman". (Once a chairman, always a chairman). No wonder you're stuck broadcasting internet radio and blogging. Posted by: SethGecko13 on June 21, 2005 05:01 PM
Hey Seth, when you lose Dana Milbank's support, you've really gone off the deep end. Posted by: JFH on June 21, 2005 05:02 PM
BTW, Seth, like you we've read Conyers reply to Milbank just like you, it still doesn't make it true. Posted by: JFH on June 21, 2005 05:04 PM
Oh please. Milbank has always been an obedient little reporter for the right-wing Washington Post. At BEST he's a mainstream democrat. The very idea that he's a "liberal" (or that he speaks for "liberals) is one that could only exist in the fact-bereft ether of the right wing blogosphere (or soon right wing radio, as their standards are slipping pretty steadily there). If it's significant that Milbank took a potshot at Conyers, what does it say about the side-switching of a REAL player like Richard Clarke? Posted by: SethGecko13 on June 21, 2005 05:07 PM
Hey GEEKO. Does the same hold true for office holders of the KKK. I would be more than happy to address Senator byrd as Grand Dragon Byrd. (Once a KKK member, always a KKK member) Posted by: Dman on June 21, 2005 05:12 PM
By the way, this ad hominem attack on Conyers sort of skips over us having to confront the implications of the Downing Street Memo(s). (which is the intent). Posted by: on June 21, 2005 05:14 PM
Byrd has a shameful past, and he's forced to own up to it every time the KKK is mentioned - and rightly so. He's a Dixiecrat anyway, so your attempt at a retort doesn't even work. Posted by: SethGecko13 on June 21, 2005 05:19 PM
He's SUPPOSED to be called "Chairman". (Once a chairman, always a chairman). Oh, bullcrap! Have you watched a REAL Congressional hearing on CSPAN? In fact, refer back to the Conyers requested hearing on the Patriot Act last week, never ONCE was Conyers referred to as "Chairman". It would be too confusing in a hearing to have former or even current chairman in another committee to be referred to with that designation. Posted by: JFH on June 21, 2005 05:26 PM
If we're operating under the presumption that the Downing Street Memos don't matter - why is it that the Republicans on the Senate Select Intelligence Committee (like Pat Roberts) have been blocking every attempt to release the second half of the 9/11 Commission report which was to analyze whether or not the Bush Administration deliberately misused intelligence in the run up to the Iraq war? I would think they'd want such exculpatory evidence to be front and center. (Guess it's not exculpatory evidence...) Posted by: SethGecko13 on June 21, 2005 05:26 PM
Geeko you better research the history of Dixiecrats. You ignorance is really showing. Posted by: Dman on June 21, 2005 05:32 PM
Oh, bullcrap! Have you watched a REAL Congressional hearing on CSPAN? In fact, refer back to the Conyers requested hearing on the Patriot Act last week, never ONCE was Conyers referred to as "Chairman". Conyers isn't the chair of the House Judiciary Committee, so for the sake of confusion, it's understandable that he wouldn't be. As with all ettiquitte, it's up to every individual to determine whether or not to participate, and to what level. I doubt many of you folks still refer to Clinton as "Mr. President"; that doesn't make those that do incorrect. Ahh - the Patriot Act hearing...is that the one James Sensenbrenner (R-Wis.) gaveled down and walked out of like a coward? Posted by: on June 21, 2005 05:33 PM
To me he looked like the chairman who left the chamber having just closed the hearing leaving you marxists holding each others balls. Posted by: Dman on June 21, 2005 05:44 PM
If y'all can show me any formal instance where a former chairman of ANY committee, is referenced as "Chairman xxxx", I'd like to see it. A former presiden, secretary and senator in a FORMAL setting is ALWAYS referred to as such. Posted by: JFH on June 21, 2005 05:51 PM
JFH is right, a former Chairman is not refered to by his former title. Former President; yes. Former Chairman; Not so much. Posted by: US Soldier on June 21, 2005 05:57 PM
You will have to excuse Geeko. He is enamored with the Chairman title being that Mao was likely a personal hero. Posted by: Dman on June 21, 2005 06:01 PM
You will have to excuse Geeko. He is enamored with the Chairman title being that Mao was likely a personal hero. Lol....well, everyone looks up to someone. It's good that he set his sites so high. Posted by: US Soldier on June 21, 2005 06:04 PM
Seth, When someone has actual evidence that journalists are targeted, get back to us. Your links mean nothing, the first just parrots claims by Serbs that NATO deliberately targeted a radio station. The second talks about the tank that fired on the Baghdad hotel in '03. Neither provides evidence of a deliberate act. If journalists choose to enter a war zone, they have to understand that they may be caught in the crossfire. While I have sympathy for them, they are adults who made the choice to go into a dangerous area. Of course, you probably won't listen to any of this. if you really believe the Washington Post is "right-wing" then you are beyond reach. I suspect Pravda circa 1980 would have been a little too right leaning for your tastes. By the way, a Mencken quote on the Republican Party from the first half of the last century has very little meaning in modern politics. A bit absurd to pull it out of your ass. Posted by: TheDude on June 21, 2005 06:12 PM
Fox is reporting Durbin is apologizing for his comments. Looks all that "manufactured outrage" by the "right-wing media machine" was finally just too much for the guy, makes thier previous stonewalling look silly: http://washingtontimes.com/functions/print.php?StoryID=20050621-121514-9288r Posted by: brak on June 21, 2005 06:21 PM
I think Seth has taken his game of whiny-ball home. Posted by: US Soldier on June 21, 2005 06:23 PM
This is the right link: Posted by: brak on June 21, 2005 06:23 PM
"I am also sorry if anything I said cast a negative light on our fine men and women in the military ... I never ever intended any disrespect for them. Some may believe that my remarks crossed the line to them I extend my heartfelt apology," Durbin said, choking on his words. Cry me a friggin' river. So, I guess it's ok to trash all over the military, as long as you apologize for it later. This would be a lot more understandable if it wasn't a f'n senator. I mean come on, this is the type of thing you expect out of Hollywood. But a Senator... Posted by: US Soldier on June 21, 2005 06:27 PM
So, I guess it's ok to trash all over the military, as long as you apologize for it later. No. One must give a half ass apology and shed some tears, then it is ok to trash all over the military. Posted by: on June 21, 2005 06:37 PM
What the hell do you do Ace, that allows you to put on a radio show at 4 EST during the week? $5 says you're hiding in the broomcloset/bathroom with your bottle of valu-rite vodka... Posted by: fat kid on June 21, 2005 06:37 PM
And yes, that was a rhetorical question. Posted by: fat kid on June 21, 2005 06:38 PM
$5 says you're hiding in the broomcloset/bathroom with your bottle of valu-rite vodka... Jealous? Posted by: on June 21, 2005 06:38 PM
No. One must give a half ass apology and shed some tears, then it is ok to trash all over the military. I forgot about the tears. All is forgiven, now. Are we starting a speculation thread on what we think Ace does for a living? Posted by: US Soldier on June 21, 2005 06:46 PM

"It's f**king f**ked."
-- reportedly a genuine comment offered by a "senior Labour source" Correction: I wrote that Labour is losing 88% (now 87%) of the seats it is "defending." I think that's wrong. The right way to say it is the seats they are contesting -- that is, they don't necessarily already hold these seats, but they have put up a candidate to run for the seat. It's still very bad but not as bad as losing 87% of the seats they already held. Basil the Great
"The end of the two party system in the UK" as first the Fake Conservatives and now Labour chooses political suicide rather than simply STOPPING THE INVASION
Incidentally, the only reason this didn't already happen in the US is because of the Very Bad Orange Man (who is right on 85% of all policy calls and extremely, existentially right on 15% of them)
No political party that is NOT also a doomsday religious cult would EVER choose a cataclysmic loss -- and possible extinction as a party -- to support a toxically unpopular favoritism of NON-CITIZEN ILLEGAL MIGRANTS over actual citizen voters.
Only a cult does this.
Now they've lost 84%.
Annunziata Rees-Mogg Update: They've now lost 88% of the seats they're defending. As I mentioned earlier, I think I heard that London will not bail them out, as many of those Labour seats will probably flip to "Muslim Independent" or Green. Detroit's 5am vote will not save them.
Yup, Labour is losing 80% of its seats...
The British Patriot Wow, up to 1700-2100 seats. It's not incredible that this is happening. It's incredible that the Davos crowd is so absolutely determined to privilege Muslim "migrants" over the actual native population who elects them, no matter how loudly the natives scream that they want to be prioritized, that they will gladly self-extinguish as a party rather than simply representing the interests of their own voters. Astonishing. Remember, when they call other people "cultists" -- they are the ones so imprisoned in their social reinforcement and discipline bubbles that they will choose political death rather than dare upset the Karen Enforcement Officers of their cult. Update: Now they've lost 83% of the seats they were defending. (((Dan Hodges))) Nick Lowles
STARMERGEDDON: In early returns, Reform gains 135 seats, Labour loses 90, the Fake Conservatives lose 36 (and I didn't even know they could fall any further), the Lib Dems lose 4, and the Greens gain 6. Note that the only other party gaining seats is the Greens and they're only gaining a handful of seats.
Update: Reform now up 145, Labour down 98. Labour projected to lose Wales -- where they've ruled for 27 years. Fulton County Georgia just discovered 400 boxes of ballots for Labour Update: REF +156, LAB -107, CON -45 Brutal: In four out of five council seats where Labour is defending, they've lost. 80%. I'm sure it's not this simple, but Reform is straight taking Labour's and the "Conservatives'" seats. They've lost almost exactly what Reform gained. If understand this right (and warning, I probably don't), all of London's council seats are up for election, and Labour might lose hugely there, as their old voters abandon them for Reform, Muslim Indenpendents, and the Greens. REF +190, LAB -134, CON -56.
Updates on the Labour collapse in council elections -- which wags are calling #Starmergeddon -- from Beege Welborne. There are about 5000 seats up for grabs, Labour is expected to lose 1,800, Reform will probably gain 1,580, up from... zero. So this would be more than that.
People claim that while Labour has adopted the Sharia Agenda to appeal to the million Muslims it allowed to migrate to the country, those voters are ditching Labour to vote for the Muslim Independent Party or the Greens. Delicious. This shadenfreude is going straight to my thighs. Oh, and if Starmer loses about as badly as expected, Labour will toss him out of a window Braveheart style and replace him. He will announce he is resigning to spend more time with his Gay Ukrainian Male Prostitutes.
Media bias and senationalism are as old as, well, the media:
![]() That was written by Denny O'Neill and illustrated by, get this, Frank Miller. Editor to the Stars Jim Shooter was in charge at the time. I always thought the gag was original to the comic book, but in fact the "Threat or Menace" headline was a satirical joke about media bias and sensationalism for a long while. The Harvard Lampoon used it in a parody of Life magazine: "Flying Saucers: Threat or Menace?"
