Torture? You Make the Call

Here's the key paragraph from an FBI agent's report that Excitable Andy and Dickie Durban make such a fuss over:

On a couple of occasions, I entered interview rooms to find a detainee chained hand and foot in a fetal position to the floor, with no chair, food, or water. Most times they urinated or defecated on themselves, and had been left there for 18-24 hours or more. On one occasion, the air conditioning had been turned down so far and the temperature was so cold in the room, that the barefooted detainee was shaking with cold... On another occasion, the [air conditioner] had been turned off, making the temperature in the unventilated room well over 100 degrees. The detainee was almost unconscious on the floor, with a pile of hair next to him. He had apparently been literally pulling his hair out throughout the night. On another occasion, not only was the temperature unbearably hot, but extremely loud rap music was being played in the room, and had been since the day before, with the detainee chained hand and foot in the fetal position on the tile floor.

Now, without a doubt, being chained to a floor is not pleasant. But it's not torture. It's deliberate discomfort, as are "stress positions" and the like.

As for the AC being turned off and the temperature being "well over 100 degrees" -- hey, that's life. There are a lot of people without AC who have to endure temperatures "well over 100 degrees" for days on end. This is torture? If so, I've undergone torture quite a few times in past Augusts.

And rap music? Give me a break. Obviously they're trying to give this guy headaches and not give him the quiet necessary to think. Playing music loudly is annoying, but once again-- not torture.

So, there you go. Based on that, we're running "gulags" torturing people as badly as the Nazis.

Great Cox & Forkum Cartoon on Durbin: And, by extension, Excitable Andy too.

Torture in Iraq! No AC for Iraq the Model, and Metallica's blaring.

But where is Dick Durbin? Who will speak for Omar?

Thanks for the last two to NickS.

I also think that the anti American Americans are trying to confuse the issue and lump these descriptions into the description of the general detainee life instead of what it is , which is our continuing attempt to gather intelligence among selected, individual terrorists. These stress actions are not done for fun or punishement or experimentation. Once it is determined that the detainee has provided as much useful information as possible, he is basically just a guest of gitmo who is served his orange chicken with pilaf until we can determine if it is safe to let him go.

I'd rather be a muslim in Gitmo than a Christian in Saudi Arabia.

Giving the cartoonist's view from the left side of the media, the guys at Powerline have put up a real gem from Chris Britt. (Link here.)

The cartoon is pretty amazingly offensive, but consider what it says about the guy that he could come up with the idea and take the time to finish the drawing without realizing how far over the top he'd gone. Consider, too, that Britt's drawings are carried in mainstream papers. It's not like he's the house cartoonist for MoveOn.org or anything.

These criminals are desperate and insanely violent. At every opportunity, they will try to murder the guards using their feet, hands and their teeth. They make Hannibal Lector look like a 80 year old grandmother.

The criminal might have just killed or maimed a guard and was under disciplinary lock down. Let's put Durban in with those prisoners and see if Durban lives for more than 7 minutes.

A alternative might be to go the Hannibal Lector route. Put him in a wire cage wearing a goalie mask and a straight jacket.

"extremely loud rap music was being played in the room, and had been since the day before"

Sorry guys, but this IS torture. And damn cruel torture at that.

I thought you meant AC, the obscenely entitled band. Playing that might get some results!

I saw a documentary not very long ago on the Discovery Channel (I think) about British military interrogators. They too subjected the people they were interrogating to stress positions, isolation in shackles, loud music (at one time they also played a loud recording of a baby crying), intimidation that stopped just short of physical violence, sleep deprivation, etc. They also learned almost all of the details of the plot they were trying to uncover from those they were interrogating.

Here's the interesting thing: it was 6 college students who had volunteered to undergo interrogation. They were all given "facts" about a "plot", and their goal was to conceal the facts of the plot from the interrogators for 24 hours. It was quite interesting. They signed medical waivers and if I recall correctly one student was examined by a medic partway through the interrogation and declared to be just fine.

Of course, at the time, I didn't realize that this supposed documentary on modern interrogation tactics was, in fact, televised torture of hapless college students duped into the situation by some producer. If I knew then what I know now, now that the Left has informed my brutish conservative outlook, I would have been horrified. ABSOLUTELY HORRIFIED! Because they really, really care so much about the detainees in Gitmo. Really, they do. I mean, they say so, right?

Afterwards, in the debriefing, the students agreed it was a much more harrowing experience than they had thought it would be, but I don't remember any of them tearing out their own hair or threatening lawsuits. Guess they just didn't know they were being tortured...

Whoops, it was the History Channel: http://www.teamdelta.net/HistoryChannel.htm

Posted by: Squatch on June 21, 2005 10:19 PM

I got some of the facts wrong, it wasn't college students and it was U.S. military, but the idea is the same.

My bad. :-(

It gets even better than being shackled hand and foot in the fetal position to the floor. Presumably this means BOTH HANDS and BOTH FEET. One doesn't need to be so constrained to lose control of bodily functions. However, some new laws of physics are required to permit this poor demented individual to grow a third arm so he could pull his hair out and leave it in a nice orderly pile?

Posted by: Mescalero on June 21, 2005 10:34 PM

Nah, in the fetal position your hands are near your head anyway.
I could see how he could duck his head and tear some hair out, especially if there was a few links of chain between the floor and his wrists.

But again, its not like our soldiers did that to him. If he tears his own hair out, should he be further restrained to keep him from doing that?

Because then, presumably, being chained up wouldn't be considered 'torture', right? Even if its more restrictive than being chained to the floor, because its only to keep him from...not really hurting himself? Yeah, 'cause what is the big F'n deal about pulling hair?

Aw, this whole thing is so fucking stupid. Give me the pliers and the blowtorch. I'll show you what.

"It's f**king f**ked."
-- reportedly a genuine comment offered by a "senior Labour source"
Correction: I wrote that Labour is losing 88% (now 87%) of the seats it is "defending." I think that's wrong. The right way to say it is the seats they are contesting -- that is, they don't necessarily already hold these seats, but they have put up a candidate to run for the seat. It's still very bad but not as bad as losing 87% of the seats they already held.

🚨ED MILIBAND [a Minister in Starmer's government] SAYS KEIR STARMER WILL RESIGN AS PRIME MINISTER

He has reportedly reassured Labour MP's that Starmer will be resigning following the disastrous results tonight

It's over
"The end of the two party system in the UK" as first the Fake Conservatives and now Labour chooses political suicide rather than simply STOPPING THE INVASION
Incidentally, the only reason this didn't already happen in the US is because of the Very Bad Orange Man (who is right on 85% of all policy calls and extremely, existentially right on 15% of them)
No political party that is NOT also a doomsday religious cult would EVER choose a cataclysmic loss -- and possible extinction as a party -- to support a toxically unpopular favoritism of NON-CITIZEN ILLEGAL MIGRANTS over actual citizen voters.

Only a cult does this.
Now they've lost 84%.
Annunziata Rees-Mogg
@zatzi
If this continues Labour loses 2,148 seats tonight.

That is much worse than the worst case predictions I’ve seen.

Cataclysmic

Update: They've now lost 88% of the seats they're defending. As I mentioned earlier, I think I heard that London will not bail them out, as many of those Labour seats will probably flip to "Muslim Independent" or Green. Detroit's 5am vote will not save them.
Yup, Labour is losing 80% of its seats...
The British Patriot
@TheBritLad

🚨 BREAKING: Labour have lost 80% of all seats contested as of 2:25 AM.<
br> If this continues, Keir Starmer will be out of office next week.

Reform has surged and projected to pick up between 1700-2100 seats.

Wow, up to 1700-2100 seats. It's not incredible that this is happening. It's incredible that the Davos crowd is so absolutely determined to privilege Muslim "migrants" over the actual native population who elects them, no matter how loudly the natives scream that they want to be prioritized, that they will gladly self-extinguish as a party rather than simply representing the interests of their own voters. Astonishing.
Remember, when they call other people "cultists" -- they are the ones so imprisoned in their social reinforcement and discipline bubbles that they will choose political death rather than dare upset the Karen Enforcement Officers of their cult.
Update: Now they've lost 83% of the seats they were defending.
(((Dan Hodges)))
@DPJHodges

Reform are basically wiping Labour out in the North. It's not a defeat. It's not even a rout. Labour are simply ceasing to exist.

Nick Lowles
@lowles_nick

Tonight’s results are calamitous for Labour. Not just for Keir Starmer's leadership, but for the very future of the party
STARMERGEDDON: In early returns, Reform gains 135 seats, Labour loses 90, the Fake Conservatives lose 36 (and I didn't even know they could fall any further), the Lib Dems lose 4, and the Greens gain 6. Note that the only other party gaining seats is the Greens and they're only gaining a handful of seats.
Update: Reform now up 145, Labour down 98.
Labour projected to lose Wales -- where they've ruled for 27 years.
Fulton County Georgia just discovered 400 boxes of ballots for Labour
Update: REF +156, LAB -107, CON -45
Brutal: In four out of five council seats where Labour is defending, they've lost. 80%.
I'm sure it's not this simple, but Reform is straight taking Labour's and the "Conservatives'" seats. They've lost almost exactly what Reform gained. If understand this right (and warning, I probably don't), all of London's council seats are up for election, and Labour might lose hugely there, as their old voters abandon them for Reform, Muslim Indenpendents, and the Greens.
REF +190, LAB -134, CON -56.
Updates on the Labour collapse in council elections -- which wags are calling #Starmergeddon -- from Beege Welborne. There are about 5000 seats up for grabs, Labour is expected to lose 1,800, Reform will probably gain 1,580, up from... zero. So this would be more than that.
People claim that while Labour has adopted the Sharia Agenda to appeal to the million Muslims it allowed to migrate to the country, those voters are ditching Labour to vote for the Muslim Independent Party or the Greens. Delicious. This shadenfreude is going straight to my thighs.
Oh, and if Starmer loses about as badly as expected, Labour will toss him out of a window Braveheart style and replace him. He will announce he is resigning to spend more time with his Gay Ukrainian Male Prostitutes.
