Gitmo or Chicago? You Make the Call!

While Dick Durban frets about the lack of central air at Gitmo, he's oddly silent about genuine prison brutality closer to home.

In one incident, an elite squad of 40 guards took over a maximum-security [unit] ... for the sole purpose of beating and terrorizing the prisoners. A jail investigator determined that the guards' misconduct was covered up by ... medical personnel, who filed false reports and refused or delayed treatment to the prisoners, and by the ... inspector general, who refused to cooperate with the investigation. In the other incident, five inmates in a special incarceration unit ... alleged that they were beaten by 20 or more ... as they lay cuffed and shackled on the floor.

Gitmo? No, Chicago.

I'm sure the fact that the prison in question is run by a political ally who is not George Bush has nothing at all to do with this.

Thanks to NickS.

If the Senate can apologize for blocking anti-lynching legislation half a century ago (one of the most irritating examples of pious mouthings I've had to witness recently), surely one senator can rise to condemn abuse in his home state's prisons?

No?

Didn't think so.

Once upon a time, I thought the Democratic party could be saved. I don't believe it any more.

Um, that is a ridiculous comparison. Why dont you take a look at:
http://macarthur.uchicago.edu/treatment/prisoners.html
Or their last update:
Update (January 7, 2005):
MacArthur Justice Center Wins Settlement for Inmate Beaten by Cook County Jail Guards in 1999

Cook County Jail inmate Cello Pettiford, represented by MacArthur Justice Center Attorney Jean Maclean Snyder, recently won more than $360,000 from Cook County to settle a federal lawsuit. In the lawsuit, Pettiford charged that he, along with other inmates, was severely beaten by Jail guards in 1999.

The settlement follows a grand jury report released in September 2004 that found that a beating did occur and jail officials responsible for investigating the alleged beatings covered up the incident.

To view photos of prisoners who were abused and to read more about the history of this case, please scroll up the page.

Notice any differences? Like access to lawyers, investigations, accountability, etc.
Like I said, your comparisson is a joke.

Max,

Dick Turban (D ill) should be horsewhipped, tarred and feathered, and run out of this nation on a rail.

I've always thought that the US "correctional" system was a national disgrace. One of the Abu Ghraib violators was Chip Frederick, who was a Virginia prison guard before he came to Iraq. God knows what kind of wacky hijinks he was up to at home. Not to mention that a lot of prisoners are harmless potheads who shouldn't be in there in the first place.

Posted by: David Ross on June 17, 2005 01:59 PM

So Maxipad, where can I find Durbins condemnation of the actions of the Cook County Jail and his actions to support corrections of these violations?

Posted by: Dman on June 17, 2005 02:00 PM

Wow, you guys are really mature. Glad to stop in at this lame site- enjoy your echo chamber.

Posted by: Max on June 17, 2005 02:04 PM

More on air conditioning.

First, notice they have air conditioning. They are the only Arabs in the Middle East who have air conditioning other than the Sheiks.

If we wanted to torture them, we would put them in any building in Texas. Damn, do they keep buildings cold down there.

As hard core as Ace's site is (and I love that about the place!), he really attracts the lamest of trolls.

Take, for example, this "Max" character. We call his boy Durbin out, slap him around a little bit, give him the blog equivalent of a purple-nurple and maybe a wedgie. Really, the guy's a clown and not worth too much energy. So what does Max do in response? Offers up some crap about lawsuits, blah blah blah. Honestly, I see a Democrat using the word "accountability" and my eyes glaze over. Snooze-ola.

In response to this snorer of a response, DMan gives Max a taste of his own medicine, calls out the hypocrisy charge, sticking Durbin once more with the charge that he's a worthless gas-bag water-carrier for other Democrats who are smarter than him, etc. Nothing too personal, nothing about how Max is a mouth-breather, no references to banging his sister in the squeakhole, just a little light bickering. For fun.

What does Max do? He throws his hands up in a huff, calls the place an "echo chamber" and storms off. (To go experience the wide-ranging, fertile intellectual forum of moderation and scintillating discourse that is the Daily Kos, I'm sure.)

Really, dude, we really didn't a chance to get started.

Come back, Max, and let's talk about your sister some more. Please? We get so few lefties with the stones to go toe-to-toe.

Posted by: Phinn on June 17, 2005 03:06 PM

So, is the prick (Durbin) going to backpedal, apologize, or what? Any predictions?

Posted by: on June 17, 2005 03:36 PM

Shucks, just put all those Gitmo jihadi mistreats in the Cook County Jail. The inmates, there, would enjoy showing the camel fuggers how things are really done.

Make sure they bring their prayer rugs and Korans, too, the inmates will show the poor ragheads religion, all right.

Jake,

We keep the buildings cold down here in the summer cause we really love the high-beams.

mmmmmmmmm. headlights!

BAD Dave!

Remember what cold does to guys and you won't be laughing so much....

There are not a lot of harmless potheads in prison. Though as one myself, I agree that there shouldn't be *any*, the myth that people in prison are mostly either harmless drug users (a.ot. being a little higher on the food chain) or "political prisoners" (really, I've had Europeans tell me this), is ... well, a myth. And a pernicious one.

We can have deep Foucaulvian conversations about discipline and incarceration and all, but the guy holding you up for your wallet at 2AM won't be any less real because you "understand."

Durbind isn't going to appologize or backtrack. He'll claim that the VRWC is blowing everything out of proportion and the MSM will quietly bury the whole thing.

"It's f**king f**ked."
-- reportedly a genuine comment offered by a "senior Labour source"
Correction: I wrote that Labour is losing 88% (now 87%) of the seats it is "defending." I think that's wrong. The right way to say it is the seats they are contesting -- that is, they don't necessarily already hold these seats, but they have put up a candidate to run for the seat. It's still very bad but not as bad as losing 87% of the seats they already held.

🚨ED MILIBAND [a Minister in Starmer's government] SAYS KEIR STARMER WILL RESIGN AS PRIME MINISTER

He has reportedly reassured Labour MP's that Starmer will be resigning following the disastrous results tonight

It's over
"The end of the two party system in the UK" as first the Fake Conservatives and now Labour chooses political suicide rather than simply STOPPING THE INVASION
Incidentally, the only reason this didn't already happen in the US is because of the Very Bad Orange Man (who is right on 85% of all policy calls and extremely, existentially right on 15% of them)
No political party that is NOT also a doomsday religious cult would EVER choose a cataclysmic loss -- and possible extinction as a party -- to support a toxically unpopular favoritism of NON-CITIZEN ILLEGAL MIGRANTS over actual citizen voters.

Only a cult does this.
Now they've lost 84%.
Annunziata Rees-Mogg
@zatzi
If this continues Labour loses 2,148 seats tonight.

That is much worse than the worst case predictions I’ve seen.

Cataclysmic

Update: They've now lost 88% of the seats they're defending. As I mentioned earlier, I think I heard that London will not bail them out, as many of those Labour seats will probably flip to "Muslim Independent" or Green. Detroit's 5am vote will not save them.
Yup, Labour is losing 80% of its seats...
The British Patriot
@TheBritLad

🚨 BREAKING: Labour have lost 80% of all seats contested as of 2:25 AM.<
br> If this continues, Keir Starmer will be out of office next week.

Reform has surged and projected to pick up between 1700-2100 seats.

Wow, up to 1700-2100 seats. It's not incredible that this is happening. It's incredible that the Davos crowd is so absolutely determined to privilege Muslim "migrants" over the actual native population who elects them, no matter how loudly the natives scream that they want to be prioritized, that they will gladly self-extinguish as a party rather than simply representing the interests of their own voters. Astonishing.
Remember, when they call other people "cultists" -- they are the ones so imprisoned in their social reinforcement and discipline bubbles that they will choose political death rather than dare upset the Karen Enforcement Officers of their cult.
Update: Now they've lost 83% of the seats they were defending.
(((Dan Hodges)))
@DPJHodges

Reform are basically wiping Labour out in the North. It's not a defeat. It's not even a rout. Labour are simply ceasing to exist.

Nick Lowles
@lowles_nick

Tonight’s results are calamitous for Labour. Not just for Keir Starmer's leadership, but for the very future of the party
STARMERGEDDON: In early returns, Reform gains 135 seats, Labour loses 90, the Fake Conservatives lose 36 (and I didn't even know they could fall any further), the Lib Dems lose 4, and the Greens gain 6. Note that the only other party gaining seats is the Greens and they're only gaining a handful of seats.
Update: Reform now up 145, Labour down 98.
Labour projected to lose Wales -- where they've ruled for 27 years.
Fulton County Georgia just discovered 400 boxes of ballots for Labour
Update: REF +156, LAB -107, CON -45
Brutal: In four out of five council seats where Labour is defending, they've lost. 80%.
I'm sure it's not this simple, but Reform is straight taking Labour's and the "Conservatives'" seats. They've lost almost exactly what Reform gained. If understand this right (and warning, I probably don't), all of London's council seats are up for election, and Labour might lose hugely there, as their old voters abandon them for Reform, Muslim Indenpendents, and the Greens.
REF +190, LAB -134, CON -56.
Updates on the Labour collapse in council elections -- which wags are calling #Starmergeddon -- from Beege Welborne. There are about 5000 seats up for grabs, Labour is expected to lose 1,800, Reform will probably gain 1,580, up from... zero. So this would be more than that.
People claim that while Labour has adopted the Sharia Agenda to appeal to the million Muslims it allowed to migrate to the country, those voters are ditching Labour to vote for the Muslim Independent Party or the Greens. Delicious. This shadenfreude is going straight to my thighs.
Oh, and if Starmer loses about as badly as expected, Labour will toss him out of a window Braveheart style and replace him. He will announce he is resigning to spend more time with his Gay Ukrainian Male Prostitutes.
