Democrats Crying Over Public Television Funding CutsFrom Democrat Frank Lautenberg: ![]() Right. Like Sesame Street, which is a successful children's television institution, needs public funding. There are a few good shows on public television, but there are some terrible shows too. If funding gets cut the good shows would make the transition (because they're good, and people like them) while the bad shows would get cut. Where's the problem? posted by Ace at 05:52 PM
CommentsThe problem is that the bastards in BushCo are preventing crappy television programs from infiltrating a child's tiny, mushy little brain. We need to fund them, no matter how bad they are, and we should probably throw even more money at them. Don't fix the shows, just more money! Kinda like a public school, ya know? Posted by: CollegePundit on June 10, 2005 06:03 PM
Oh sure, he picks two "harmless" examples for his little propaganda rag. What about the non-muppet content of Sesame Street? Like that "which of these things is NOT LIKE THE OTHER, which of these things just DOESN'T BELONG" routine? I mean, if that doesn't sow the seeds of discrimination in fertile young minds, I don't know what does. Posted by: apotheosis on June 10, 2005 06:06 PM
With the preponderance of cable/satellite networks with childrens programming and everybody in the country owning a vcr/dvd player and a couple dozen barney or elmos videos, who the hell is the target audiance. How much are we paying so one percent or less of the population can have free, educational programming (that is mostly duplicated or done better elsewhere)? Bye bye NPR. You know it's bad when the head of CPB comes out and *says* there's heavy handed liberal bias. What's worse is they only do it when they need corporate sponsors. In otherwords, if da gummamint kept writing checks there'd be no need to sell out to kkkorporate intere$t$. What a bunch of fuckin phonies. Posted by: fat kid on June 10, 2005 06:27 PM
Here's a little secret all us parents know: no sentient toddler can stand to watch Sesame Street for more than 2 minutes. And who can blame them? The frozen-in-1973 utopian multiethnic 'hood, the crap xerox animation, the mugging by frightening guest grownups like Rosie, Robin Williams and Hillary -- 3-4 year olds find it every bit as boring and stupid as you. No, the only reason Sesame Street exists is to be a government funded media tie-in for Muppet merchandise. If you want real educational TV for your kids, let 'em watch Spongebob. It's ten times more literate, a million times more entertaining, and makes its money honestly. Posted by: iowahawk on June 10, 2005 06:48 PM
I used to watch a lot of public television before we had a million channels to pick from. The problem (if it can be called that) is that channels such as the history channel, discovery, and TLC do as a good or much better job. There really is little need for public tv anymore. Posted by: PeterArgus on June 10, 2005 06:53 PM
Wow, EVERY commenter is RIGHT in this thread so far. Public TV is a liberal dinosaur that NEEDS to become extinct. Grow some 'nads, Republicans, and drop the comet already. Later, Posted by: bbeck on June 10, 2005 07:47 PM
You'd think a US Senator would have more important things to do. But I guess you'd be wrong. Posted by: Sean M. on June 10, 2005 09:02 PM
Once upon a time, PBS was a boon for nerdy kids like me who loved classical music and Shakespeare. I saw my first opera on PBS back in the 70s, I loved 'Previn and the Pittsburgh', and I watched several seasons of the BBC Shakespeare plays until Jonathan Miller took over all the directing and ruined them. But nowadays, it's just not necessary anymore, even for people like me. There are specialty channel for all that stuff, and even better, there are dvds for every sort of arts program you could ever want. PBS has been outstripped by technology - time to shut it down. The likes of Sesame Street and Barney have been money machines all along. How can they possibly stay on the air without dipping into public funds? I was all of four when Seasame Street started and didn't get past seven before I first came to wonder about the relationship between all of the merchadise in the stores and public TV. I didn't understand a thing about taxes but something just wasn't right even at that age when the channel presenting the show was so constantly out begging for money from viewers. And that was before the multi-billion dollar home video industry arose. Then we had all of the British shows that had already been paid for by taxpayers in the UK. Covering the cost of those should amount to some very inexpensive air time for commercials but no, my parents had to pay for this regardless of whether anybody in our family cared. I was subjected to Barney due to being pressganged into babysitting my neices and nephews. Sesame Street was subtle genius compared to this driven. If Barney had been on the air when I was a toddler I'm sure I'd be a mass murderer today, just to punish the world for permitting such to exist. We're going to have to keep a very close eye on those kids now entering their teens. Posted by: Eric Pobirs on June 10, 2005 09:55 PM
I was listenening toi NPR tonight. They did a piece on how they were not going to change a thing due to 'inappropriate pressures' from 'interest groups', and how any changes they made were going to be 'mostly technical'. I then listened to 1/2 hour of the straightest reporting I have heard from NPR in 10 years about Dean's (cough) misstatements and two other stories. They actually did the stories straight - I was floored. The 'inappropriate pressures' are working. Posted by: ib1netmon on June 10, 2005 10:08 PM
Say Anything- "... the truly good shows will continue to make it on their own, simply because they truly are good shows. People will watch them and the shows will succeed. If they’re not good shows, they will fail..." Agreed. Posted by: Redstate K. on June 10, 2005 10:45 PM
I thought pbs viewership had dropped significantly due to , as someone else already noted, cable. I haven't watched it in years. Why does the public have to fund television no one watches? Posted by: on June 11, 2005 10:23 AM

Few people remember that Norm MacDonald began his career as a ventriloquist
MacDonald's old partner Adam Egot revealed that MacDonald repurposed a bit with one of his ventriloquist dolls -- that he was a "bad guy" who "didn't believe the Holocaust happened" -- for the Norm MacDonald show, in which he claimed Egot didn't believe in the Holocaust. Funniest thing I've read about the Virginia mess. Back when they were hustling the referendum through the assembly both Senators, Warner and Kaine, advised them to go slow and play by the rules. Louise Lucas said she respected them but didn't need advice from the "cuck chair" in the corner. The gerrymandering was overturned and Louise is heading for the big house. Edward G. Robinson voice "where's your cuck now?" I posted his post on twitter and it's gotten 25K views so far. Thanks, Smell the Glove Chris

"It's f**king f**ked."
-- reportedly a genuine comment offered by a "senior Labour source" Correction: I wrote that Labour is losing 88% (now 87%) of the seats it is "defending." I think that's wrong. The right way to say it is the seats they are contesting -- that is, they don't necessarily already hold these seats, but they have put up a candidate to run for the seat. It's still very bad but not as bad as losing 87% of the seats they already held. Basil the Great
"The end of the two party system in the UK" as first the Fake Conservatives and now Labour chooses political suicide rather than simply STOPPING THE INVASION
Incidentally, the only reason this didn't already happen in the US is because of the Very Bad Orange Man (who is right on 85% of all policy calls and extremely, existentially right on 15% of them)
No political party that is NOT also a doomsday religious cult would EVER choose a cataclysmic loss -- and possible extinction as a party -- to support a toxically unpopular favoritism of NON-CITIZEN ILLEGAL MIGRANTS over actual citizen voters.
Only a cult does this.
Now they've lost 84%.
Annunziata Rees-Mogg Update: They've now lost 88% of the seats they're defending. As I mentioned earlier, I think I heard that London will not bail them out, as many of those Labour seats will probably flip to "Muslim Independent" or Green. Detroit's 5am vote will not save them.
Yup, Labour is losing 80% of its seats...
The British Patriot Wow, up to 1700-2100 seats. It's not incredible that this is happening. It's incredible that the Davos crowd is so absolutely determined to privilege Muslim "migrants" over the actual native population who elects them, no matter how loudly the natives scream that they want to be prioritized, that they will gladly self-extinguish as a party rather than simply representing the interests of their own voters. Astonishing. Remember, when they call other people "cultists" -- they are the ones so imprisoned in their social reinforcement and discipline bubbles that they will choose political death rather than dare upset the Karen Enforcement Officers of their cult. Update: Now they've lost 83% of the seats they were defending. (((Dan Hodges))) Nick Lowles
STARMERGEDDON: In early returns, Reform gains 135 seats, Labour loses 90, the Fake Conservatives lose 36 (and I didn't even know they could fall any further), the Lib Dems lose 4, and the Greens gain 6. Note that the only other party gaining seats is the Greens and they're only gaining a handful of seats.
Update: Reform now up 145, Labour down 98. Labour projected to lose Wales -- where they've ruled for 27 years. Fulton County Georgia just discovered 400 boxes of ballots for Labour Update: REF +156, LAB -107, CON -45 Brutal: In four out of five council seats where Labour is defending, they've lost. 80%. I'm sure it's not this simple, but Reform is straight taking Labour's and the "Conservatives'" seats. They've lost almost exactly what Reform gained. If understand this right (and warning, I probably don't), all of London's council seats are up for election, and Labour might lose hugely there, as their old voters abandon them for Reform, Muslim Indenpendents, and the Greens. REF +190, LAB -134, CON -56.
Updates on the Labour collapse in council elections -- which wags are calling #Starmergeddon -- from Beege Welborne. There are about 5000 seats up for grabs, Labour is expected to lose 1,800, Reform will probably gain 1,580, up from... zero. So this would be more than that.
People claim that while Labour has adopted the Sharia Agenda to appeal to the million Muslims it allowed to migrate to the country, those voters are ditching Labour to vote for the Muslim Independent Party or the Greens. Delicious. This shadenfreude is going straight to my thighs. Oh, and if Starmer loses about as badly as expected, Labour will toss him out of a window Braveheart style and replace him. He will announce he is resigning to spend more time with his Gay Ukrainian Male Prostitutes.
Media bias and senationalism are as old as, well, the media:
![]() That was written by Denny O'Neill and illustrated by, get this, Frank Miller. Editor to the Stars Jim Shooter was in charge at the time. I always thought the gag was original to the comic book, but in fact the "Threat or Menace" headline was a satirical joke about media bias and sensationalism for a long while. The Harvard Lampoon used it in a parody of Life magazine: "Flying Saucers: Threat or Menace?"
