Schroeder Engineers Dubious Snap-Elections in the FatherlandSeveral days old, but I never got around to posting it. Long story short: facing an embarassing defeat in Westphalia and general discontent about Germany's ailing economy, Schroeder engineered quickie early elections by deliberately getting a vote of no confidence from the Parliament (the requirement for early elections). He had his own people vote "no confidence" in order to allow him to call for early elections. Which raises the question: why didn't the opposition vote "confidence" to forestall this? I guess they were taken by surprise, or else really want a chance to take Schroeder down when he's wounded. But obviously Schroeder figures this is his best chance to cling to power. Of course I don't follow German politics very closely, but I have formed an impression or two, and one of those impressions is that Gerhard Schroeder is a fucking douche-tool. I hope the conservatives in Germany can get it together, double-quick, and oust this dickhead. But European conservatives often seem even less competent than the American Republican Party. posted by Ace at 12:54 PM
CommentsThe other parties are even worse. Pick your poison, the Greens or the Neo-Nazis. Posted by: robert on May 26, 2005 01:03 PM
Hey, look on the bright side-- the EU Constitution's about to go to seed, and of in all places, France. That's about as oxymoronic as French perfume, or French military genius. Hell with the euro. . . I'm buying Iraqi dinars. Cheers, Posted by: Dave at Garfield Ridge on May 26, 2005 01:07 PM
The mordantly funny thing about the whole EU mess is that everyone is going to turn it down for completely contrary reasons. The French will probably turn it down because it has too much American-style capitalism at its base, and will force the French to actually work for a living. The Britains will reject it because it is too Continent-bound and too rules-bound. The Dutch hate it because it will codify their political impotence into law. The French don't like it because it's too Anglo-Saxon. The English don't like it because it's too French. The Germans just wish their ecnomony would emerge from the dumper. And no one seems to be able to express how the 300-page "constitution" does anything more than create a huge nanny-state with no clear goal or purpose. Posted by: Monty on May 26, 2005 01:31 PM
Monty, good comment. How would you like to be on the EU 'Supreme Court' trying to rule on a 300 page constitution! Lol. Our Supremes can't interpret a 2 pager. Posted by: BrewFan on May 26, 2005 01:37 PM
It's not just a question of their competence - European conservatives are, almost to a man (and most of them, sadly, are men - their gender gap is surely wider than ours last year?), are either way, way too into the Euroborg thing to pass muster as a California conservative, let alone Dubya .. Who American conservatives really want to get hooked up with is the European "liberals," or "neo-liberals." Unfortunately, there aren't that many of them. There is that one super-hot French libertarian chick, though - I assume you've posted appreciations of her in the past, Lemmy? Posted by: Knemon on May 26, 2005 01:46 PM
European "conservatives" are usually ultra-nationalistic populists. They have very little in common with American conservatives. Posted by: SJKevin on May 26, 2005 02:06 PM
Regarding the EU vote, there are reports stating that if the French vote "Non" -- they will simply be asked to vote again. You see, the leftists don't believe that you know what you want. So, they will just keep asking for a vote until the "correct" outcome is achieved. Much like some of our vote recounts... Note: There are conflicting reports whether the re-vote will occur. But, I tend to be pessimistically optimistic that the French elite will attempt to shove the EU down the public's throat.
Not sure who to believe. Posted by: TheShadow on May 26, 2005 02:08 PM
Not if Sabine Herold has anything to say about it. For the record, this is the "super-hot French libertarian chick" that Knemon was talking about. Posted by: Slublog on May 26, 2005 02:21 PM

Yes, yes. I see what you mean: She is hot. As for the text -- I don't speaky the language. Posted by: TheShadow on May 26, 2005 02:31 PM
I think TheShadow's pretty much got it right: If the EU gets a wrong response from the voters on their constitution, they'll simpy vote again. And again, if necessary. Also, after similar referenda on Maastricht and currency union, the Brussels sprouts have adopted a policy of multi-tracking, where member countries don't have to adopt every aspect of the Union at the same time. I believe the technical term is "ordering a la carte." Speaking of which, I'm going to start reviewing my French if France has libertarians that look like Mlle. Herrold. That jeune fille definitely qualifies as a Democracy Babe. Posted by: utron on May 26, 2005 02:33 PM
The French, to their credit, use the world "liberal" correctly. For us, "liberal" usually means leftist (which makes no sense). For the French, it means something like libertarian. Posted by: SJKevin on May 26, 2005 02:34 PM
It gets even better. Her political heroine? Margaret Thatcher. The guys at Powerline did a piece on her, with picture, a couple of years ago. Safe to say I've got a crush. Posted by: Slublog on May 26, 2005 02:48 PM
I wouldn't be surprised if the French import some vote counters from Washington State. What is the French for tin foil? Posted by: Simon Oliver Lockwood on May 26, 2005 06:54 PM

What is the UK Regime's plan for protecting the citizens from the savage criminals they've foisted on the populace? They offer NONE. They do, however, have a plan for protecting the savage criminals from the citizens: The citizens must STAY CALM and not get angry and not share videos of citizens being attacked by savage criminals. The public keeps saying "protect us from the foreign savages you have imported against our wishes and over our objections" and the UK branch of The Regime keeps proposing plans to protect the foreign savages from the public. Soclose to what the public is demanding, just, you know, the complete opposite. Just a thought: Maybe you wouldn't have to worry about the public attacking the savage criminals if you actually introduced a plan to protect the public from the savage criminals. Maybe they wouldn't feel as if it was necessary for them to protect the public through self-help.
