Absolutely Disgusting: Gay Blogger Forced Off the Net

I believe Gay Patriot has commented here a couple of times. I may be mistaken; someone calling himself Gay Patriot West has posted. I think it's the same guy.

Either way....

It seems a "chill wind" of leftist hatred is a-blowin':

GayPatriot, the anonymous gay Republican blogger, has officially signed off. In a statement, no explanation was given. With GayPatriot’s permission, I am now able to recount the real story.

On Friday, GayPatriot posted “WANTED: GAY TERRORISTS” in which he identified gay activists and bloggers John Aravosis (Americablog) and Michael Rogers (BlogActive) as ["gay terrorists," for their single-minded determination to out gays they disagree with politically].

According to Gay Patriot, who is also a client of mine, Michael Rogers called GayPatriot’s place of employment on Friday immediately following the post above and spoke to GayPatriot’s secretary and boss. GayPatriot had no idea Rogers would go to such measures and shared with me that both he and his secretary were very upset by the calls but that his boss was understanding.

Later on that day, Rogers personally called me and recounted much of the same account, adding that he had also called the police and is working with the authorities on the matter. Rogers expressed feeling threatened by the post and compared it to posts by anti-abortionists who posted the names of doctors performing them.

Rogers also said he asked GayPatriot to remove the post and replace it with a post about non-violence or he would launch a national boycott of GayPatriot’s corporate employer and pursue any and all avenues necessary to protect himself. By the time Rogers had called, GayPatriot had already made the decision to remove the post and also remove GayPatriot from the blogosphere.

GayPatriot was silenced.

Some wonder why I try to remain anonymous -- this would be why.

Confederate Yankee compares the tactics of the left to what he believes is the anti-gay agenda of Jerry Falwell. I think he's a little hard on Falwell, whom I have no use for and am fequently embarassed by but whom I think means well enough, but the left really cannot have it both ways.

They cannot whine about the crushing of dissent and then practice the most thuggish of intimidation tactics themselves.

Obviously, if Gay Patriot has a post in him and needs a forum, standing offer to say his piece here.

My Lord,

The double standard is absolutely disgusting. Those people are really hitting the bottom of the barrel. Actually, they hit the bottom and kept on diggin'.

Any other Blogger's out there want to make such an offer? I think this is most gracious of you, Ace.

Posted by: KCTrio on March 30, 2005 01:18 PM

Isn't it sad that those who claim equal protection under the law based on the idea that 'what is done in the privacy of the bedroom is nobody else's business' use whats done in the privacy of the bedroom as a weapon of personal destruction?

Posted by: BrewFan on March 30, 2005 01:29 PM

Gay Patriot West is going to try to keep the site up now that Gay Patriot's been forced out. No question, this is really low. Apparently Aravosis and Rogers are going after Mehlman at NRC, and claim they're going to out a Cabinet member soon. One more example, like we needed one, that some of these people have no ethical standards--what's wrong for the right is right for the left. Yeah, that's clear enough.

gays are not allowed to leave the dems plantation....all resistance will be dealt with harshly

truly pathetic, but unsurprising

"Any other Blogger's out there want to make such an offer? I think this is most gracious of you, Ace."

It's not all that gracious. It is tainted with self-interest, which caused me to think twice about making the offer at all.

Obviously, I wouldn't mind a bit of help in churning out dumb postings, and besides, it would be link bait.

But I did make the offer for mostly selfless reasons.

Still, there is that taint of self-interest, too.

Posted by: ace on March 30, 2005 01:44 PM

Hey, if GayPatriot wants to post at my place, he's more than welcome to. Ace's offer is a lot better because more folks are going to read him here (by about an order of a bazillion), but the door's open anytime he wants it.

Posted by: Jimmie on March 30, 2005 01:52 PM

I have one concern here and that is whether the unnamed corporate employer's attitude is the factor which ultimately caused the blogger to withdraw the blog. That wouldn't make the outing campaign right, but it would say something about the employer.

Posted by: slickdpdx on March 30, 2005 01:59 PM

Yeah, this sickened me when I read about. We'll be doing a little bit on this on our radio show tomorrow. This same Rogers guy also got LimeShurbet's ISP provider to yank his site, because he, too, posted the "wanted" thing.

Posted by: Jeff G on March 30, 2005 02:08 PM

All the same, there's a lesson in this.

GayPatriot knew that the far left would want his head on a platter, yet he made it easy for them with his over-heated post. I'm not blaming the victim here; I think what happened is despicable and we've lost an interesting and important voice. But bloggers need to learn from this and be careful when they write that their words can't be (deliberately) misconstrued.

Posted by: SJKevin on March 30, 2005 02:24 PM

If Jerry Falwell cannot claim libel against Larry Flint for writing in Hustler magazine that Falwell had his first sex with his own mother in an outhouse (complete with graphic cartoons of the act), because it was presumably so outrageous that no one could believe it and GayPatriot can not repeat allegations made by politicians about politians, we are in far worse trouble than I thought.

THE LIBERAL MIND IS A TERRIBLE THING AND SHOULD BE WASTED!

(And I mean that in the best possible way, of course).

Posted by: 72VIRGINS on March 30, 2005 02:36 PM

"bloggers need to learn from this and be careful when they write that their words can't be (deliberately) misconstrued"

Ace has never done THAT. His attacks are always very strightforward and clear.

Posted by: hobgoblin on March 30, 2005 02:37 PM

BLOGGERS - I seem to recall other conservatice bloggers being silenced like this, but of course no Lefty bloggers being treated so. Can anyone recall any other bloggers Left or Right who got similar treatment or results?

Posted by: 72PRUNES on March 30, 2005 02:41 PM

Virgins,

Welcome to the post-Planned Parenthood case era.

Remember that "Nuremburg Files" hoopla and the lawsuit over the webpage about abortion docs? While the page may have been reprehesible in "advocating" for violence, it was ultimately a matter of free speech. Judge Jones here didn't think so, and the free speech rights of all of us were eroded ever so slightly.

Now, the idea that something is "threatening" is enough to squelch speech. It's the ultimate camel's nose under the tent. Soon, any opinion with which the militant left disagrees will be "threatening." We'll see if the courts put a brake on this inexplicit threat doctrine.

Posted by: hobgoblin on March 30, 2005 02:42 PM

But neither Ace nor Gay Patriot nor an elected represented has a RIGHT to anonymity, & they should expect people who don't like them to try to embarrass them by outing them. It sounds like Gay Patriot (blogspot?) had a wussy ISP that ran screaming at the first threat. So change ISPs.

These outing Nazis only have power as long as people hand it to them. They've accomplished nothing. Aravosis is hilarious, he's unhinged that Gannon is still getting work. Basically all he did was hand Gannon a book contract. Good work, sucker!

Posted by: jeff on March 30, 2005 02:45 PM

Oh, for god's sake. "Silenced" indeed. Such drama.

No one had any obligation to keep Gay Patriot's identity secret. Aravosis or Rogers could have outed him for any reason at all, even if he hadn't painted a big red target on his back by calling them terrorists.

As for leaving the blogosphere because of Rogers' threats to boycott the corporate employer--GP should have thought of that long, LONG before now. If there's no connection between his employer and his posting, then the employer could just laugh in Rogers' face. If there is, then more fool GP.

Cops? If it's a valid threat, then the cops will respond. If not, the cops will laugh, too.

Look, it's not a "community" here in the blogosphere. No one automatically owes anyone else deference or courtesy and god knows, few people show it. Political bloggers on both sides of the aisle play for blood. If your employer would object to your activity, then you've got an exposure. Don't blame someone else for exploiting it. And for sure don't blame them for going for the jugular when you refer to them as terrorists.

Posted by: Cal on March 30, 2005 02:45 PM

That's it. I'm de-linking you, Cal.

Posted by: Jeff G on March 30, 2005 02:48 PM

Um. I was linked? Oh, wait.

Posted by: cal on March 30, 2005 02:54 PM

They cannot whine about the crushing of dissent and then practice the most thuggish of intimidation tactics themselves.

ACE - Umm, wrong. They have always done exactly that. The large majority of people in this country disagree totally with the Left and always have. They have maintained their power by splitting the voters into different groups and rewarding each group at the expense of the other, by keeping a stranglehold on academe and the media, and when that fails they resort to intimidation, phyiscal threats, protests, violence and:

THE THREAT OF BOYCOTT!!!

I can't speak for GayPatriot, but if the article is true, he threw in the towel once the Lefty started calling his boss, and I'll bet threatened a boycott.

Be that as it may, the point is that apparently GayPatriot was unbowed until the Left started fucking with his livelihood. WE MUST DO THE SAME! If we want to get Ward Churchill we must boycott the goods and services of the outside contributors of UC.

THE RIGHT MUST BOYCOTT!!!

Hey Cal, where do you work?

Posted by: 72VIRGINS on March 30, 2005 03:00 PM

This story has pissed me off like no other for the past week or so.

Posted by: fat kid on March 30, 2005 03:01 PM

72--I live in Northern California. You wouldn't have to find my employers to do me damage; you'd just have to tell my neighbors.

Jeff--You just want 100%.

Posted by: Cal on March 30, 2005 03:04 PM

Yeah,

Cal, how 'bout telling us where you work so we can have our SS go visit your employer and make him an offer he can't refuse?

If you won't do it, you're showing us all how full of shit you really are.

Posted by: 72NAZIS on March 30, 2005 03:07 PM

As I understand it, 72virgins has it right: Aravosis and Rogers tracked down Gay Patriot's employer and threatened a boycott unless GP shut down. That's not outing (which is loathsome enough); that's silencing, and it exposes Rogers and Aravosis' claim that they felt "threatened" by GP's over-the-top post for the steaming heap of moonbat BS it really is.

Posted by: utron on March 30, 2005 03:16 PM

Cal - It doesn't matter what you do or say, our hackers at the DOD and NSA and Ultra (don't even ask) have already found you and we are planning our next move as you read this. We have also interviewed your neighbors, your family, your friends, the one lover you ever had, your classmates, fellow employees and your boss.

WE ARE WATCHING YOU!!!

Posted by: 72VIRGINS on March 30, 2005 03:21 PM

Gay Patriot is also welcome at Redstaterant.com I had the good fortune to speak by email with Gay patriot several times in late January. The guy is a class act and deserved better than this.

I don't mind blaming the "victim" in this case. Bandying the word "terrorist" around in the way that's been described and combining it with the format of the "wanted" poster are too close to incitement. If GayPatriot wanted to communicate something other than that these people are wanted for being gay terrorists, he should have, well, said something other than that these people are wanted for being gay terrorists. Besides, I don't quite grasp GayPatriot's eagerness to pair the word "gay" with everything. I'd like to think his making sure everyone knows he's a "gay patriot" is meant to contribute to a search for a boyfriend or something; otherwise, GayPatriot seems to be indicating something such as that he thinks "gay patriot" has the interesting rareness of "man bites dog." In the same vein, the reported deeds of the so-called terrorists don't seem much meaner or less mean for having been done by gay guys. I suppose GayPatriot and I are pretty similar in our politics, but I still say he should watch his mouth.
