The Angry Left: Not an Insult, But a Diagnosis

So says Taranto, and I believe him (last item):

And here's some statistical evidence: UC Berkeley recently completed what a press release describes as "the first attempt to compare measures of mental health and general well-being among California's general population on a county-level basis." The study (link in PDF) finds that the two counties with the lowest "mental health scores" are Alameda, which includes Berkeley, and San Francisco, which is coterminous with the city. (See page 30 of the PDF document, which is page 21 of the printed report.)

What else do these counties have in common? They are the California counties where John Kerry did best: 83% of the vote in San Francisco and 75% in Alameda. You don't have to be crazy to oppose President Bush, but it doesn't hurt.

Now, that's just a little fun baiting, of course. But it's preposterous for David Corn and others to maintain that there's a "myth" of the Angry Left. The Left is angry; in fact, it's addled.

Those who got so much mileage out of tossing out the term "Clinton-haters" to demean anyone who opposed Clinton can hardly complain about similarly demeaning terms now.

"...can hardly complain about similarly demeaning terms now."

Wanna bet?

In a 1947 letter, after Mr. Byrd had been elected to the state senate, he wrote that he would "never submit to fight beneath that banner (the American flag) with a Negro by my side. Rather I should die a thousand times, and see old Glory trampled in the dirt never to rise again, than to see this beloved land of ours become degraded by race mongrels, a throwback to the blackest specimen from the wilds."

The New York Times reported in 1971 on a letter Mr. Byrd wrote in 1946, after leaving the Klan. Writing to the Klan's Imperial Wizard, Mr. Byrd identified himself as a former Kleagle and recommended a person to serve as state Klan coordinator. He wrote, "The Klan is needed today as never before and I am anxious to see its rebirth here in West Virginia. . . . It is necessary that the order be promoted immediately and in every state in the Union. Will you please inform me as to the possibilities of rebuilding the Klan realm of W.Va?"

So I guess Byrd, as one of the most "respected" democrats (as per Mr. Dowd), is certainly qualified to lead the Democratic effort against Rice.

And the NY Times and Democrats in general had taken "serious issue" with Lott's comments. Jeeze.

bsp --you forgot this gem:

"There are white niggers. I've seen a lot of white niggers in my time. I'm going to use that word. We just need to work together to make our country a better country, and I'd just as soon quit talking about it so much."

Byrd interview with Tony Snow, 2001.

"The Left is angry; in fact, it's addled."

Now, now, Ace. That's just your 'cognitive dissonance' talking.

Reinforces my theory that liberalism / leftism is more a mental disorder than an ideology.

This is news?

Must be something in the water.

Over a million two hundred thousand hits. Geez...

Lefty's mental state certainly would explain their amazing ability to ignore logic and/or reasoning. And of course their ability to analogize completely unrelated things.

Posted by: Birkel on January 21, 2005 04:20 PM

Um, be careful not to paint with a wide brush. I live in San Francisco and, I'm being totally serious here, I think the question of mental health is a loaded one. On one hand we have one of the largest homeless populations in the country who are laying in their own shit and eating garbage, then you have quiet, close nit Chinese (Not Chinatown) neighborhoods where the people are functioning very well. Then, we have our hippy, communist sections in contrast to the 3rd largest financial center in the US. I think this study may be a victim of outliers more than a study of who voted for who.

On the other hand, those people in Berkeley are just frickin' nuts...

Posted by: TF6S on January 21, 2005 04:45 PM

Yeah, but consider WHY you have all of those insane derelicts. Because they've been chased out of more sensible communitites that won't tolerate their behavior and won't operate containment facilites for them when San Francisco will do it for the price of a bus ticket.

"HR 30221 is proceding directly to conference, no time to waste", a staffer to a House of Representatives member said earlier. Known as the Shrinks for Deranged Democrats Bill, the effort would boost medical benefits for phyciatric services for a number of current and former Government employees.

"How can anybody argue with it..." he went on to say. "Look at Kennedy, Gore, Mathews, Dean, Boxer
not mention Air America. You could lose half the party to Bellview, then who would we have to beat?"

Important Message from Recent Convert to Christianity and Yet Super-Serious Christian Tuq'r Qarlson: Actually Muslims love Jesus, it's Trump and his neocons who hate him
Tucker Carlson Network
@TCNetwork

The people in charge [Jews, of course -- ace] don't want you to know this, but Muslims love Jesus.

Islam reveres Him as a major prophet and messenger of the Lord, believes He performed miracles, and states that He will return to Earth to defeat the Antichrist. That's why Donald Trump's painting depicting himself as the Son of God offended the president of Iran. It was an attack on his religion as well as Christianity.

Trump's trolling tweet was ill-advised, but Tucker is just lying when he claims the Christianity-hating President of Iran was "offended" by this.
He's one step away from announcing his official conversion to Islam. He literally never stops praising Islam. Well, he suddenly became Christian two years ago, there's not much stopping him from converting again.
You can track Tuq'r's official conversion to Islam with this Bingo card.
