Comments Down

Sorry, this seems to keep happening. Last time, though, they were working again in a couple of hours.

I apologize for the loose shit going on with this site's comments. Maybe Man of Substance can recommend someone to ride my ass until they're fixed once and for all.

Sorry Ace! They should be back online now.

Yes, working now.

The main problem is that comment spam shot up to absolutely insane levels over Christmas/New Year, and I've been fiddling with it all this time to try to block it efficiently. Sometimes my fiddles didn't quite work as planned.

There's a fellow named Andrew Sullivan who seems to have a very profitable weblog. Perhaps you could get some pointers from him.

Pixy,

Thanks. Were those spam attacks related to the site slow downs?

Over at the perfect world, it was so bad they suspected some sort of a hack-attack, via spam.

Thanks, Pixy.

What's going on with the big spike in spamming? At the perfect world, it was so bad they suspected a hack-attack via spam.

Posted by: ace on January 7, 2005 12:15 AM

I don't know why the big spike, but at one point it slowed the system so much that I couldn't even log in to fix it and had to reboot the server. (So yes, it was directly related to the slow down.)

It did look like a deliberate attempt to bring the server down, but maybe they just wanted to spam individual posts hundred and hundreds of times...

Posted by: Pixy Misa on January 7, 2005 12:30 AM

See, when the people at the Perfect World told me they suspected an attack and that we should all disable our comments, I thought they were just being paranoid.

I mean, who would want to bring us down, really?

But I guess maybe someone did.

Do you think you've gotten things fixed?

Posted by: ace on January 7, 2005 12:51 AM

Yeah... Until they bring out the next release of spam-software.

It's turned into an arms race. Most of the brains are on the good side, but it's a lot easier to break things than to build them, so the bad guys have an easier job.

As to who, well... There's not much money in spam, compared to a real business, but there's enough that there are progammers dedicated to writing spam tools and defeating anti-spam systems. For example, the crap-flood we were getting hit with over New Year's was designed to overload MT Blacklist so that the spam could get through.

They are bastards, and I hope their dicks get gangrene and fall off.

Somebody should write a book about the greatest drinking stories of O'Toole, Burton, Harris, and Caine. One of my faves was Richard Harris went on a six week bender in the South of France without telling wifey. Upon return, she's screaming, and he simply replied "why didn't you pay the ransom"?
