Rutgers Researchers... Cure AIDS?

For some reason I think this one's real:

Researchers at Rutgers University have developed a trio of drugs they believe can destroy HIV, the virus that causes AIDS, according to a published report.

The drugs, called DAPYs, mimic the virus by changing shape, which enables them to interfere with the way HIV attacks the immune system.

Tests conducted in conjunction with Johnson and Johnson have shown the drug to be easily absorbed with minimal side effects. It also can be taken in one pill, in contrast to the drug cocktails currently taken by many AIDS patients.

“This could be it,” Stephen Smith, the head of the department of infectious diseases at Saint Michael's Medical Center in Newark, said. “We're all looking for the next class of drugs.”

...

The research has targeted reverse transcriptase, a submiscroscopic protein composed of two coiled chains of amino acids. It is considered HIV's key protein.

“Reverse transcriptase is very important in the biology of AIDS,” Dr. Smith said. “If you can really inhibit reverse transcriptase, you can stop AIDS.”

The optimism about R278474 stems from its potential to interfere with an enzyme that the virus needs to copy and insert itself into a human cell.

“We're onto something very, very special,” Dr. Arnold said.

I'll have to start moderating my generally blase attitude to New Jersey. (no disrespect to Garden Staters intended)

I'm glad you posted this, because I'd surely never have gotten to Excitable Andy's website to see it.

Sweet - now the bathhouses can open back up! Let's break these chaings of love!

Posted by: blaster on December 13, 2004 11:41 PM

And Ace, you think this is the real deal because of your leading edge knowledge of biomedical research?

Damn..I knew this was a comprehensive site, but who knew you could go from Kim Richards videography to the intracacies of targeted reverse transciptase in just one or two blog entries???

No wonder you won that damn award....

At last, Ace, you can safely go back to your bisexual ways!

At last, Ace, you can safely go back to your bisexual ways!

Never in a gay way, though. Never in a gay way.

Like a Viking.

Hunch + the way they're talking about it + the way they're describing it as actually killing the virus, rather than just retarding or it the like.

Plus... well... I've got my reasons. They're not *good* reasons or what you'd call so-called "medically sound" resons, but I've got them.

Posted by: ace on December 13, 2004 11:55 PM

So, er, does this have anything to do with the secret you were going to let us in on but, uh, didn't?

Posted by: someone on December 14, 2004 12:01 AM

Someone,

I meant to respond to your earlier question about that.

I'm still debating about revealing the big secret. It's actually not a big secret; more of a little secret.

I'm torn between wanting to share and wanting to preserve anonymity.

And if I reveal, I sorta want to do it in a well-written post, and I'm having trouble writing it.

As for the blogrolll: I'm waiting for web-diva to finish fixing my site. Honestly, I can't do anything right now, as I don't know where things go.

Posted by: ace on December 14, 2004 12:03 AM

But no, I don't have AIDS or anything.

Nor have I cured AIDS.

Posted by: ace on December 14, 2004 12:03 AM

I can see Andrew Sullivan celebrating.

Yeah, bareback is back! The bath-houses and orgies are a GO! Lucious young boys and cruising chickenhawks.

Until we have enough unsafe sex for AIDs IV to arise.
Then we can demand the government devote health resources away from cancer and diabetes again to get the next Cure!!

Posted by: alain on December 14, 2004 12:52 AM

Sounds too good to be true.

Posted by: mAcChaos on December 14, 2004 01:19 AM

Crap! Now the Republicans will have to come up with a new biological warfare agent to oppress Africa and San Francisco. No rest for the wicked, I suppose.

Seriously, though, I hope this pans out. AIDS is no way to go.

Posted by: Sobek on December 14, 2004 01:33 AM

Wait, Johnson and Johnson? Isn't that an EVIL drug company? Surely this story is a farce!

"Until we have enough unsafe sex for AIDs IV to arise. Then we can demand the government devote health resources away from cancer and diabetes again to get the next Cure!!"

You'd have a case if things were so hermetic. But cell biology is all one thing, for starters. And what's been learned from the study of HIV is valuable for the control of viruses generally and retroviruses in particular. It's not as if HIV is the only virus with the good sense to write itself directly into the DNA.

Posted by: Kynes on December 14, 2004 03:03 AM

The key will be how quickly - or not - resistant mutations of the virus can develop. But like Ace, I find a hopeful tone in this release, one that, if it doesn't signify a cure, will at least signify a major step forward in treatment.

Ace, you're right: they're talking about actually killing the damn virus, instead of the usual "inhibiting" it.

Posted by: ras on December 14, 2004 04:46 AM

Rutgers?

Good for them. Shows what you can accomplish when you're not distracted by having a football team at your school.

Posted by: sonofnixon on December 14, 2004 07:18 AM

Hmmm. Don't mess with replicating viruses.

We use this cure, and it'll be like when that guy from Hunter opened up his chest and took off that guy from St. Elsewhere's arms with his alien chest-jaws.

Cheers,
DK

ANOTHER LEFT WING ASSASSIN ATTEMPTS TO KILL TRUMP
If I understand this, the left-wing Democrat assassin attempted to get into the White House Correspondents Association dinner, and was stopped at the magnetometers, which detected his gun. I guess he pulled out the gun and was shot by Secret Service agents.

Important Message from Recent Convert to Christianity and Yet Super-Serious Christian Tuq'r Qarlson: Actually Muslims love Jesus, it's Trump and his neocons who hate him
Tucker Carlson Network
@TCNetwork

The people in charge [Jews, of course -- ace] don't want you to know this, but Muslims love Jesus.

Islam reveres Him as a major prophet and messenger of the Lord, believes He performed miracles, and states that He will return to Earth to defeat the Antichrist. That's why Donald Trump's painting depicting himself as the Son of God offended the president of Iran. It was an attack on his religion as well as Christianity.

Trump's trolling tweet was ill-advised, but Tucker is just lying when he claims the Christianity-hating President of Iran was "offended" by this.
He's one step away from announcing his official conversion to Islam. He literally never stops praising Islam. Well, he suddenly became Christian two years ago, there's not much stopping him from converting again.
You can track Tuq'r's official conversion to Islam with this Bingo card.
