Democrats' Miracle Strategy for 2006/2008: Giving Shit Different Names

Wow!!! Why didn't somebody think of that before?!

During the 2004 campaign, Lakoff suggested that instead of talking about how Bush had run up the national debt, Democrats should label it a "baby tax'' the Republican president had imposed on future generations.

He has suggested that same-sex marriage should be referred to as "the right to marry.'' Trial lawyers like vice presidential nominee John Edwards should instead be called "public protection attorneys,'' and the term environmental protection, which brings to mind big government and reams of regulations, should instead be termed "poison-free communities.''

Will this work?

Of course it will. Let's be honest: You're idiots.

But seriously. The left has to stop being transfixed by the magical, transformative power of euphemism. Being crippled is a horrible state-- but calling a cripple "differently abled" or that sort of thing hardly changes things any. It may be polite (although to me it sounds condescending) but simple word-substitutions can't change reality. And only rarely do they change the perception of reality.

Wow. And this guy is a Professor of Linguistics and Cognitive Sciences.

Maybe from now on we should label "Professors of Linguistics and Cognitive Sciences" as "Human beings possessing less than average intellectual capabilities" or maybe just "Borderline Retarded".

These semantic changes won't fool smart conservatives like you and me. But then again, who says most liberals are smart?

Posted by: Zelda on December 8, 2004 04:53 PM

I suggest we rename the Democratic Party something else.

I don't know what else. I'm not funny. I'm simply throwing that out there, for a poll.

Cheers,
Dave at Garfield Ridge

Well George Bush calls tax cuts tax Relief. Republicans do the same thing. Pro Choice is now Pro Abortion. It's all bullshit.

Posted by: Chris Grant on December 8, 2004 05:22 PM

"Pro-Choice" could be pro-infant murder. It is "pro-abortion" - because that is what they are advocating. NOT choices...because regardless of abortion, women have MANY choices (birth control, abstinance, adoption, or parenthood.) Sounds like choices to me. Anyhoo, this is a silly silly aritcle because people already do this. When I was preggo with my first (and no insurance, a Grad student) - I went to planned parenthood ... and guess what? They told me they couldn't do anything for me, because they don't do "pregnancy." (oops, sorry, didn't mean to steal this - I actually had a totally different point to make ... it's gone now.)

> I suggest we rename the Democratic Party something else.

How about something that conveys a positive message of reconciliation, tolerance, and temperate humility... maybe something like "The Reality-Based Community." Yeah, that oughta do it.

And to think that the Michael Moore wing of the Democratic Party is always pulling the "1984" accusation on US...

Posted by: Kazmin on December 8, 2004 07:25 PM

1. A good name for the Democratic Party would be the Care Bear Party. Because they care, they're cute and cuddly, they like smiles and sunshine more than scowls and dark clouds, and they use happiness to drive away evil.

2. Chris Grant, so-called pro-choicers have more disdain for actual choice than Michael Moore has for combs and shampoo. The baby that gets chopped to pieces inside the womb will never make a choice. Ever.

And the woman (okay, usually girl) who made the CHOICE to have unprotected sex can CHOOSE (as Carin points out) many other options, including adoption.

Roe v. Wade is a great example of the judiciary taking CHOICE away from people. Overturn that judicial monstrosity, and people can CHOOSE (through democratically elected leaders) to protect abortion, but as long as it's in place, choice is impossible.

What a fantastic example of how the left has already redefined terms to try to change reality.

Lisa Simpson had (will have?) this idea as President, calling a tax hike a "temporary refund adjustment."

Posted by: Sean M. on December 8, 2004 08:08 PM

I'm renaming Lakoff " a vinegar and water solution used to combat that not-so-fresh feeling."

Posted by: pinky on December 8, 2004 08:47 PM

Actually, I'm all for a "baby tax". With my school taxes going through the roof to support families who dump their kids with a grandparent here, but actually live and work somewhere else (usually New York City or Philadelphia) so that their kids don't have to be condemned to the "Public School System" in their big-city socialist utopia, I'm sick of it.

Posted by: Xoxotl on December 8, 2004 09:21 PM

As part of the intiiative, Michael Moore will be digitally altered to look like Kim Richards in all his movies and TV appearances.

Posted by: TallDave on December 8, 2004 09:38 PM

Lakoff is a pathetic joke. He repeatedly says things that give force to the expression "so stupid, only an academic could believe it."

He had one big (obvious) idea in the 60's that he has milked ever since. His Hugely Importantly Theory is this: that people use metaphors to structure their thinking about concepts.

Yeah, that's right. People use metaphors. When they think about concepts! I know, I never would've guessed, either.

Lakoff is also the tool who wrote a typically retarded paper soon after 9/11 arguing that the reason the event was so traumatic for the country was because the towers were a national phallic symbol that, contrary to its metaphoric role, had been "penetrated" by the planes.

Well, I don't know about you, but I certainly wince and grab my crotch every time I watch that scene replayed on the news. Cuz like, it surely didn't have anything to do with the fact that sicko terrorists had attacked our home and killed 3,000 fellow citizens. Nope. Not at all.

DEMOCRAPOMATIC does it for me

Posted by: nick on December 9, 2004 01:06 AM

Yeah, and the democrats didn't "lose", they "secured the non-majority demographic".

Posted by: Jack Grey on December 9, 2004 02:53 AM

Classic, Jack.

If I have to hear one more Democrat applying salve to their humiliating defeat by pointing out how many votes they got, I'm just going to pee myself laughing.

Posted by: lauraw on December 9, 2004 10:35 AM

Sobek, I agree for the most part. I'm not pro choice or pro abortion or whatever it's called these days. I'm not in favor of abortion. I'm making the point that both parties use "branding" to sully the waters. I think we should write down as many labels as each party uses. I think we'd come to some pretty startling conclusions about how psychology is employed to drive votes. Chris

Posted by: Chris Grant on December 9, 2004 10:43 AM

I don't think there's anything startling about it. Politicians speak to the lowest common denominator because they live and die by votes.

Important Message from Recent Convert to Christianity and Yet Super-Serious Christian Tuq'r Qarlson: Actually Muslims love Jesus, it's Trump and his neocons who hate him
Tucker Carlson Network
@TCNetwork

The people in charge [Jews, of course -- ace] don't want you to know this, but Muslims love Jesus.

Islam reveres Him as a major prophet and messenger of the Lord, believes He performed miracles, and states that He will return to Earth to defeat the Antichrist. That's why Donald Trump's painting depicting himself as the Son of God offended the president of Iran. It was an attack on his religion as well as Christianity.

Trump's trolling tweet was ill-advised, but Tucker is just lying when he claims the Christianity-hating President of Iran was "offended" by this.
He's one step away from announcing his official conversion to Islam. He literally never stops praising Islam. Well, he suddenly became Christian two years ago, there's not much stopping him from converting again.
You can track Tuq'r's official conversion to Islam with this Bingo card.

Politico is reporting that multiple people have abruptly resigned from Eric Swalwell's gubernatorial campaign: "Members of senior leadership have departed the campaign, including Courtni Pugh, a strategic adviser who served as Swalwell's top liaison to organized labor groups."

So the campaign is collapsing due to the truth of the sexual harassment allegations.
That hissing sound you hear is the air going out of the Swalwell campaign. UPDATE: No it wasn't, it was just Swalwell one-cheek-sneaking out a fart on camera

Oh, but then, you never were afraid
Of anything that you've left behind
Oh, but it's alright with me now
'Cause I'll get back up somehow

Now twenty people will tell me it's not obscure, it was huge in their hometown and played at their prom. That's how it usually goes. When I linked Donnie Iris's "Love is Like a Rock," everyone said they knew that one and that his other song (which I didn't know at all) Ah Leah! was huge in their area.
