Late-Night Site Design With Web-Diva

Well, little by little we're getting this thing into shape. The coolest new features are the return of the most recent comments -- yeah, I missed them too; they were great for finding out who was on and what was being argued about -- and this really cool new thing that lets you continue reading an extended-entry post not on a new page but Poof! right there on the same page. You just hit "continue reading" and new words just magically appear.

It looks like I'm going to miss my million-mark. I'm about 450 hits away right now, so the millionth hit is going to come in sometime at 5:30AM, when I am, hopefully, sound asleep.

Damnit.

If you really care -- and I can't imagine why you would -- you can hit the site meter at the bottom of the sidebar to see when this magical moment takes place.

Like crap. Shoot the girl who did this.

Posted by: rachel on December 8, 2004 04:08 AM

It looks alright, but I think it'd look better if it went all the way across the screen.

Posted by: Sean M. on December 8, 2004 04:23 AM

Hey, it looks like crap right now, but that's just the way it goes with live design changes.

I'm quite impressed with the changes, even the ones that don't work right just yet. And the return of the recent comments is effin' excellent.

Posted by: Patton on December 8, 2004 04:29 AM

Rachel says there's some sort of problem about the banner "scrolling" over for people with 800x600 resolution (which is actually what I think I use).

There has to be some fix for that. Maybe it doesn't have to be be a banner-gif. Because, honestly, it doesn't look cool kinda petering out three quarters of the way across.

But we're not done yet.

Posted by: ace on December 8, 2004 04:50 AM

Damn, you've posted a lot this month. Much of it very funny (that pig caption=classic).

But should it all be on the front page at once?

(Btw, where's the Mencken quote?)

Also, could you have the pages remember your info when you go back from a comment preview? Or is that a browser issue.

Posted by: someone on December 8, 2004 04:52 AM

Comments not remember info is not a browser/cookie error it's a mu.nu error. It does that on every mu.nu site I've ever worked on.

Ace, I'll fix the banner tomorrow so it goes across the top w/o screwing up I'm just way too tired to do it now. It's 3 am.. i told you 20 minutes ago i was going to eat.. still haven't made it.. On my way now. :)

Posted by: rachel on December 8, 2004 04:58 AM

Yep - go for a full page blog - kind of like my fav one in the Ukraine:

Le Sabot

Posted by: Ron on December 8, 2004 06:32 AM

Site looks great to me. I tend to read it page by page rather than off the main- but judging by your page views and time spent, I'd guess a lot of your readers do it that way. Anyway, nice job Rachel!

Posted by: Jack Grey on December 8, 2004 08:40 AM

Just 50 something hits away Ace. If i wasn't such a lazy bastard i'd reload the site a couple more dozen times, but hey, i can't hog all the glory can i? :)

Posted by: madne0 on December 8, 2004 08:42 AM

Yea, glad to see you working again :) And, you've got the card back up ... ALL of it (before, I could only see the top half of it.)

Posted by: Carin on December 8, 2004 09:01 AM

Posted this on the wrong thread before.

Ace

You hit 1,000,027 at 9:03am Eastern, so 9am eastern on December 8th, 2004 was the day you officially crossed 1mm visitors.

Grats, buddy. Here comes the crazy blog loot.

Congrats on your one millionth hit, Ace! You are doing an awesome job and deserve the credit.

I'm liking the new comments feature; it's really easy to follow who's saying what and this "auto-preview while I type" just rocks!

Posted by: TSL on December 8, 2004 09:29 AM

Just a small group of your fans

Posted by: Master of None on December 8, 2004 09:38 AM

Site looks much better now. Black on grey is a lot easier on the eyes than the red on black motif was.

And I like the comments.

Congrats on a million hits, too. Celebrating with Cowbell? Kim?

Posted by: Colossus on December 8, 2004 10:01 AM

I was number 1,000,162! Just wanted to record that for posterity.

Posted by: Guy T. on December 8, 2004 10:24 AM

Yo ACE! How about a real ACE OF SPADES instead of the skull? But anyway, sight looks great! The new preview is terrific. And everything works right! You even got a terrific lead in Yushenkos poisoning. Your on a roll! Congrats on meeting your goal and THE VIRGINS wish you many more.

Posted by: 72VIRGINS on December 8, 2004 10:42 AM

I know its still a work in progress, but the site looks great. You couldn't have spent your crazy blog money on anything better. Rachel is amazing.

Posted by: chickpea on December 8, 2004 11:44 AM

Honestly, who still uses 800 x 600? heheh

I thought 1024x768 was "low/standard" now. :/

Posted by: fat kid on December 8, 2004 11:51 AM

Congrats on the million ace!
Keep the Death Card, but don't forget the subtitle:
"Your one stop spot for Politics and Porn!"

Posted by: Iblis on December 8, 2004 12:27 PM

Congrats on the Million visits!

Why are you still using Movable Type? There are quite a few very functional, and easy apps out there, including Wordpress and B2evo. I've managed to revamp my b2evo site myself several times without issues, and I'm no IT genius.

Posted by: Steve L on December 8, 2004 12:58 PM

Site looks great Ace! Congrats on the millionth hit!

Posted by: Golden Boy on December 8, 2004 01:14 PM

"Poof! right there on the same page. You just hit "continue reading" and new words just magically appear."

Hey, how exactly does that work? I've been trying to put something like that in my blog for a while; is it some simple HTML?

Posted by: mAc Chaos on December 8, 2004 01:29 PM

Cangrats, Ace. Now to hit two million, you just need to do that Fat Albert movie/Oliver Willis tie in.

Posted by: hobgoblin on December 8, 2004 01:38 PM

You know you can look at his code, right?
Posted by: fat kid on December 8, 2004 02:16 PM

Thanks for all the warm wishes. I'm actually going through my email right now; turns out I've gotten congratulatory letters from Oliver Willis, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Johnny Coldcuts and other luminaries. I'll be posting them later, once I finish making them up.

Posted by: ace on December 8, 2004 02:31 PM

It's a javascript. If you're on MT I'll email you the codes.

Posted by: rachel on December 8, 2004 02:55 PM

Congrats on the million, Ace!
I like the new font, for awhile there I thought I was reading Freewill.

Posted by: RapidTransit on December 8, 2004 03:37 PM

MT does at least work when you don't screw with it. Unlike Expression Engine, which doesn't work when you don't screw with it...

I can’t believe it, my co-worker just bought a car for $68613. Isn’t that crazy

Important Message from Recent Convert to Christianity and Yet Super-Serious Christian Tuq'r Qarlson: Actually Muslims love Jesus, it's Trump and his neocons who hate him
Tucker Carlson Network
@TCNetwork

The people in charge [Jews, of course -- ace] don't want you to know this, but Muslims love Jesus.

Islam reveres Him as a major prophet and messenger of the Lord, believes He performed miracles, and states that He will return to Earth to defeat the Antichrist. That's why Donald Trump's painting depicting himself as the Son of God offended the president of Iran. It was an attack on his religion as well as Christianity.

Trump's trolling tweet was ill-advised, but Tucker is just lying when he claims the Christianity-hating President of Iran was "offended" by this.
He's one step away from announcing his official conversion to Islam. He literally never stops praising Islam. Well, he suddenly became Christian two years ago, there's not much stopping him from converting again.
You can track Tuq'r's official conversion to Islam with this Bingo card.
