Questions About the New Look of the SiteLet me address some common questions and complaints: The comments are still buggy. I'm sorry, I have no idea how to fix this any further. Madfish Willy did a man's job by at least getting the comments to allow you to include your name, but, alas, I don't know why some of you aren't permitted to comment, and I don't know why it won't remember anyone. I will continue begging for help, but honestly, my please-help-me-I'm-a-moron credits are just about used up. I like the old site design better. Yes, so did I. I changed to this look not because I like the look, but because the old design was screwed up in technical terms, and wouldn't mesh correctly with the way Moveable Type's template system works. Among other things, I needed my ads to appear on all pages -- including individual entry pages and archive-by-month pages -- and I needed them ON THE SIDE, rather than up top, which causes some people to think they'd reached a blank page containing nothing but ads. I couldn't see how to do this with the old design, so I switched to a default look. I intend to put in the features and fonts and colors of the old design back into this design little by little, but I'm kind of incompetent and also kind of lazy. I figure the hours it's going to take me to do that would be better spent blogging, or, at the very least, trolling for porn, so I keep putting it off. What about the death card logo? Pretty much first on my list of additions. I miss it too. I just don't know how to put it in the banner. I can play around through trial and error, I guess. Hey! What about your blogroll?! Pretty much first on my list. Remember what I said about the death card being first on the list? I lied. The blogroll is the first on the list. When will I do it? Soon. Maybe tonight. I just need to gird myself for the massive annoyance which is playing with MT templates. posted by Ace at 06:24 PM
CommentsIf you ask nicely, Kevin Aylward might be willing to help you out. He's done it for others in the past. Posted by: Lurker on December 1, 2004 06:32 PM
At least the Mencken quote is still there. Posted by: Spade on December 1, 2004 06:37 PM
As previously mentioned, I'm not in Kevin Aylward's league, and perhaps not in Madfish Willie's league either, but if I can be of assistance, let me know. Posted by: Patton on December 1, 2004 06:44 PM
Put your contact info back up too, please, Ace. I tried to mail you today but only had an old bad address and couldn't find a new one. Posted by: Donnah on December 1, 2004 07:13 PM

Ace, You really have to get Photoshop. Because you could be doing things like THIS- http://www.hogonice.com/archives/003063.html Posted by: lauraw on December 1, 2004 07:45 PM
Ace, Good Luck Man! Posted by: MeTooThen on December 1, 2004 07:56 PM
I recommend not using the Mencken quote, because what it describes is exactly what Zarqawi has been doing, namely raising a black flag and slitting throats. Mencken's point was that even normal people may occasionally feel that way, while Zarqawi is by no means normal. Yet perhaps if Mencken were alive today he'd say something more like "Every normal man must be tempted at times to nuke those who raise black flags to slit innocent people's throats." On the other hand, maybe I'm just overly picky, and I like Ace's blog in general. Keep doin' what you're doin', Ace. Posted by: Leonardo Kokopeli on December 1, 2004 08:15 PM
Christ, Laura! There are some things a man can't unsee! *Shudder*. . . Posted by: Dave at Garfield Ridge on December 1, 2004 08:48 PM
You know, from time to time that's occurred to me. But I really do love that quote, and I chose it as the ethos of this stupid fucking dummyblog, and at this point the idea of my blog without that quote is like McDonald's without the Golden Arches. At least to me. I also wondered about calling myself "Ace of Spades" when they made Saddam Hussein the Ace of Spades, but I had been AoS long before he had. I guess, re: Mencken and AoS, I can only quote badly-aging rock-douche Bono: "Charles Manson stole this song from the Beatles, and we're stealin' it back." Posted by: ace on December 1, 2004 08:50 PM
Does this mean that when you get to the bottom you'll go back to the top of the slide? Or just that you have blisters on your fingers....(from typing, presumably...)? Posted by: senator philabuster on December 1, 2004 09:16 PM
Ace - I think my template would work for you with some minor tweakage. If you want it lemme know. Posted by: blaster on December 1, 2004 09:27 PM
Good luck with this knotball, Ace! This is one of the reasons I don't blog: I'm too intimidated to get under the hood of the user interfaces. "But a baby could do it!" Well, I ain't the baby! Posted by: The Sanity Inspector on December 1, 2004 09:28 PM
CSS is a bitch. I don't know what OS you use, but I find it much easier to edit my templates in an external file using a text editor that does color coding for tags. I know there are windows equivalents to what I use, but not what they're called. On a mac, you can't beat BBEdit. Posted by: Kevin on December 1, 2004 09:41 PM
(easier than trying to edit them within a browser window) - sorry if that was unclear Posted by: Kevin on December 1, 2004 09:49 PM
Ace, I'm no pro at this, but I helped out fellow Munuvians The Llamabutchers and Jen (both of her sites) with style issues. Shoot me an email if you want me to look over the css from your old and new templates and try to get you something workable in MT. Posted by: JohnL on December 1, 2004 10:01 PM

One glitch, at least in firefox -- the "hoist the black flag and" part is also in red and italicized through the black quote, making both unreadable.... Posted by: Adrianne Truett on December 1, 2004 10:38 PM
Well, it's not done yet. It's an experiment. I Know it looks like shit at the moment. What I need to do, I think, is set up a three-column table for the banner, so I can have the playing card on right, then the title, and then on the left the Mencken quote in small type. I know how to set up a table, but I don't know how to set the sizes of the rows, and the middle space will have to be big. Posted by: ace on December 1, 2004 10:40 PM
The Death Card! FUCK YEAH! Posted by: Iblis on December 1, 2004 10:42 PM
Try using percentages for your cell sizes. It works on my dinky little bidness site. No earthly idea how it works with stinkin' CSS, though. Check out TopStyle Pro for CSS work. Worth every nickel to me. Posted by: Scott Chaffin on December 1, 2004 11:47 PM
The fact that your comments don't remember people, with all due respect, is Pixy's fault. None of the Munuvian blogs remeber people. Posted by: Kin on December 2, 2004 12:25 AM
I use Typepad which is 'kinda MT' but hosted. I was having the same kind of symptoms for comments that you are describing - partial form, not remembering, etc. - I contacted Six Apart support and they did something to my templates - I don't know - not in templates visible to me anyway - and it immediately fixed it. So maybe they can send you a patch or lines of code to insert or something? Hope this helps...

Worry about function before aestetics, they're far easier to implement once the structure is in place. I have minions....email me....and we'll help. My short $$ for big payback has been phenominal. Posted by: SondraK on December 2, 2004 03:58 AM
I feel your pain. MT templates are a royal pain in the ass. Adapting them to your specific site design can be an enormously tedious undertaking. It took me about a week to get mine the way I wanted it. Now I've installed an updated version of MT and want to upgrade, but I just haven't had the heart to tackle that template hacking again. If I understand this, the left-wing Democrat assassin attempted to get into the White House Correspondents Association dinner, and was stopped at the magnetometers, which detected his gun. I guess he pulled out the gun and was shot by Secret Service agents. Erika Kirk was present.
