« Kerry's "Foreign Leaders": "We were just kidding!" | Main | If At First You Don't Succeed, Just Begin Lying »
November 03, 2004

The Most Important Political Victory in Fifty Years

Three reasons:

1. We expanded our strength in the Senate. For some time, conservatives have been talking (and talking, and talking, and talking) about the so-called "nuclear option" to end obstructionist fillibusters on justices. Problem is, you still need at least 50 Senators to vote for the procedural change, and we didn't have that-- Snowe, Collins, Chaffee, the Senator from Brigadoon, and most likely John McCain wouldn't go along with the plan.

Well, we now have 55 Senators. Hopefully, the new ones will decide that we cannot continue with a minority of Senators imposing a veto on judicial appointments.

Actually, given Bush's mandate, the Democrats might stop fillibustering now, but I wouldn't count on it.

2. Had Kerry won, the Democrats would have been associated with economic prosperity for the next fifty years. Clinton inherited a quickly-expanding economy and got out of Dodge just as the wheels came off the wagon. Leaving Bush, of course, with a recession.

Now the economy is growing again, but it hasn't quite begun growing like the gangbusters late nineties economy we've now (rather foolishly) sort of come to expect as the new normal. It might soon get to that level.

But imagine if Kerry had been elected. Now imagine the economy taking off, as it will probably do, in January.

Imagine the talking points. Republicans = recession. Democrats = rampaging prosperity.

Honestly, that could have all but killed the Republican Party. I've had nightsweats over that scenario for two years.

Now Bush will preside over an expanding economy for the next four years (knock, knock, spit, spit). Driving a stake through the heart of the rhetorical value of the mantra "the Clinton boom."

Ummm, that last sentence is pretty inelegant. You know what I'm getting at.

3. We will continue to perservere in the War on Terror, and psychopathic Islamofascists will not think they've "won" by influencing our election-- except, perhaps, in the way opposite to the one they'd intended. This, of course, is most important of all, because this isn't just about politics, this is about the security of the United States of America.

Our enemies are now on notice: We will not tire, we will not falter, and we will not give up until we have won this war.

Bush said it, and we as a nation mean it.

Four more years of hell, Al Qaeda.

Cry.

The Breck Bitch just gave his first '08 primary speech. It was as lame as everything else that has come out of his mouth. The cheap shots at The President were real classy, too.

"the mother whose son won't be coming home from over there". Blah, blah, Bush hates black people, too.

Asshole.

Ace, Has anyone looked into the outcome of Clark County, Ohio?. I'd love to see just how "effective" the Guardian spamming was.

Posted by: Bud Tugley on November 3, 2004 02:10 PM

Bud, I think I read on The Corner that Clark CO. went 60% bush. something like that.

Edwards is a bitch, btw. Hillary will eat his lunch in 08 and he will then be her Bitch. He thinks anyway. I think she should run with Al Sharpton.

Posted by: Jennifer on November 3, 2004 02:16 PM

Ooh Jennifer. Talk dirty to me. Make it hurt so good. Rrrooow.

Posted by: Dear Johns on November 3, 2004 02:26 PM

Yeah, Clark Co. went for Bush. As did most of the area, except the Europhilic pantywaists in Montgomery county.

Posted by: Kerry on November 3, 2004 02:33 PM

Clark County, which Bush lost to Gore by about 350 votes in 2000, was a Bush win by about 1600 votes this time.

The Guardian Effect at work, perhaps?

Posted by: Patton on November 3, 2004 02:44 PM

Imagine the talking points. Republicans = recession. Democrats = rampaging prosperity.

This had me very concerned. Also the terror jihad may be about to crumble prividing another talking point ...

Military solution = quagmire. Diplomacy = peace on earth.

As much as I agree with your sentiments, Ace, you actually need a two-thirds vote to amend the Senate Rules, so this is still pretty unlikely. See http://rules.senate.gov/senaterules/rule22.htm

2. Had Kerry won, the Democrats would have been associated with economic prosperity for the next fifty years. Clinton inherited a quickly-expanding economy and got out of Dodge just as the wheels came off the wagon. Leaving Bush, of course, with a recession.

I have long said that Clinton intentionally shot down Gore's campaign by not saying a word until the end. He knew where the economy was headed and Gore would be "his guy" so the tanking would reflect on Clinton's legacy. HE couldn't have that, so he waited until it was too late to come out in support of Gore.

Posted by: Steve L. on November 3, 2004 02:56 PM

Speaking as a Montgomery County, Ohio, resident, I must point out that at least the county went for Kerry by about half a percent less (1.5%) than for Gore (2%). Small improvement, but I'll take what I can get.

Abu Nidals’s replacement
ACE: While walking in the park here in Houston, I was asked by a well dressed man accompanied by a 10 year old boy where the library was. I told him and said I was going that way. After he knew where it was, his accent suddenly got very thick, as if to announce to me in no uncertain terms that I was walking with, a Middle Eastern Man! So I asked him where he was from, and he replied in that peculiar smiling-but-in-your-face way, “Syria, you have HEARD of it?” as if daring me to say what I thought. I replied of course I had, and Hamas and the Palestinians too. He replied in the same manner, “I am Palestinian, you have HEARD of Palestine?” Yes, the whole world has - which seemed to give him great glee, and his boy began to chuckle. To which I said, yes and we just elected George Bush and we’re going to stop you. He asked, “You are American?” to which I replied of course and he said, throwing up his hands in that peculiar Arab way, “I just moved here and in five years I will be a citizen” as if to say: you Americans are weak and stupid and we shall defeat you. I said, “oh no you won’t, not with George Bush as president” and we parted ways. The truth is I could have been talking to Abu Nidals’s replacement and yet he probably will get citizenship. Even with W's victory there is MUCH WORK TO BE DONE! 72virgins

Until the ME mess and the Islamist mess is resolved - we should finally get serious about legal and illegal immigration, though Bush loves the cheap labor coming in undercutting wages here and encourages Palestinian villages to reform in the US under "family reunification" chain migration, and illegal immigration.

Until the conflict is resolved, we should not let Muslims or Israelis settle in to the US. Visit on tourist visas, students? Yes. But not jobs visas, refugee status, or family reunification. Both the Muslims and the Israelis are at fault for the ME mess, the rise of radical Islam, and both practice severe religious discrimination against Christians.

Posted by: Cedarford on November 3, 2004 05:44 PM

Let me see, how shall I phrase this? Ah, yes:

Fuck you, Cedarford!

Posted by: Pixy Misa on November 3, 2004 06:04 PM

It's the most important election in a while because Dubya gets to take the 1 shot on Social Security/Medicare if he has the balls, needed to prevent disaster, guide the nation at war, and gets to replace 4-5 SCOTUS dodderers. Reinquist, Kennedy, O'Connor, and Stevens. And he might possibly replace Ruth the Bat or Souter in a deal.

The SCOTUS appointments will be with us for 20+ years. Replacements are sorely needed. The deal might be to kill 2 birds with one stone.....Ruth Ginsburg is proving to be a dangerous person. She has introduced the concept that the US Constitution is but one of several things that will guide her. She has said emerging global morality guides her on banning the death penalty, gay issues, guns, and states rights. She also said that justices should be guided by the fine examples of European and Israeli constitutional law. And she has influenced the growingly senile O'Connor to vote with her. Souter is a thorn in the Bush's side who has talked about one day leaving to write and farm.

So maybe Bush could offer Ruthie or David a deal - leave and I'll put Hillary Clinton on the SCOTUS.

Bush could get rid of the Republican's most likely challenger, bar Bubba from a return to the White House - and either rid the SCOTUS of a dangerous woman subject to foreign influences, or the Bush I Souter mistake. And Hillary wouldn't vote any worse liberal than either of those 2.

The other thing is to start pushing the old folks out. In the past, many SCOTUS justices hung on too long - and were pushed by their colleagues or the President to leave. Thurgood Marshall, Brennan, Burger, William Douglas were confronted, told their advanced years had become a detriment to the proper workings of the Court and told it was time to go.

How shall I phrase it other than to wonder where your loyalties lie, Pixy Misa.

Posted by: Cedaford on November 3, 2004 06:29 PM

I voted for Bush and I must be a conservative because I think liberals are childish nitwits. But I must say I think you are way over the top on the economy. Time will tell.

Posted by: Dr. Fager on November 3, 2004 06:42 PM

Cedarford, my fuck you was in response to this:

Until the conflict is resolved, we should not let Muslims or Israelis settle in to the US. Visit on tourist visas, students? Yes. But not jobs visas, refugee status, or family reunification. Both the Muslims and the Israelis are at fault for the ME mess, the rise of radical Islam, and both practice severe religious discrimination against Christians.

And fuck you is the only reasonable reponse to that. Unless I wanted to get, you know, rude.

Posted by: Pixy Misa on November 4, 2004 12:55 AM

The "Clinton Boom" was good, but I gotta tell ya, the "Bush Boom" has a real ring to it. I may have even seen the movie already.

Posted by: OCBill on November 4, 2004 02:20 AM

I'm with you Pixy, as regards our Paleo friend.

It's a new century, Cedarford...can we stop making the Jews global scapegoats, now? Its gotten old and tired.

When they are blowing themselves up in New York nightclubs, instead of taking piano lessons, we'll listen to you.

Until then, please take Pixy Misa's advice to heart.

Brian: "WE'RE NOT SPAIN! Hoo haw!"

Exactly. :D

Thank you for that.

This is a good week for everyone who likes America.

What is the UK Regime's plan for protecting the citizens from the savage criminals they've foisted on the populace? They offer NONE. They do, however, have a plan for protecting the savage criminals from the citizens: The citizens must STAY CALM and not get angry and not share videos of citizens being attacked by savage criminals.
The public keeps saying "protect us from the foreign savages you have imported against our wishes and over our objections" and the UK branch of The Regime keeps proposing plans to protect the foreign savages from the public. Just a thought: Maybe you wouldn't have to worry about the public attacking the savage criminals if you actually introduced a plan to protect the public from the savage criminals. Maybe they wouldn't feel as if it was necessary for them to protect the public through self-help.

Oof. Reviewers do not like Scary Movie 6. The criticism I keep hearing is that the movie mistakes a reference for an actual joke. The movie (they say) keeps Key Jangling a reference to another movie (or some other pop culture ephemera) and you expect there to be a joke but nope, the Key Jangle was the joke. Other reviewers say that the promise that "no lines will be uncrossed" is a fake-out, and that the movie is bland and inoffensively corporate.
