Make Sure You Vote!

Early numbers don't look too great, but they don't necessarily mean much. They're polls, unreliable to start with, and furthermore polls of unrepresentative samples of the population.

Don't let the early polls do to us what Dan Rather's early pronouncement of a Gore victory in Florida did to the conservatives of the Florida panhandle.

Vote. At least once.

And, if you want, share your voting experience with fellow newshawks.

That's better. Don't go all excitable-Sullivan on us.

Vote early, vote often.

Crap, I'm not getting any work done today.

Look... If Sen. Easter Island Head does win, we'll all have at least four years to piss and moan about it. Why the hurry?

Try again at the Corner:

"SECONDHAND INFO [Ramesh Ponnuru]
I'm told that pollsters close to the Bush campaign think that Bush is up in Florida and New Hampshire, down in Wisconsin, even in Pennsylvania and Michigan, and "doing well" in Ohio. And they don't think that the exit-poll numbers on NRO about Ohio add up. Fwiw."

The Republican who gave it to me is a congenital pessimist and has been calling around "looking for bad news"--and not finding it."

the old fat man has set up a site to collect 'abuse stories'.

Repug Goons everywhere (heh heh)

Thank God for Google. you can find precinct addresses for every battleground state.

and it's all anonymous.

Exit polls? Pha! Ignore them. There was a pollster (some college cutie who wasn't pushing anything just collecting paper) outside the polls in Roswell GA. She was just standing there and you had to approach her to post your opinion.

And there's the rub. Any statistician will tell you that a self-selecting sample is completely worthless. You have to get a cross section of the fanatics and the barely committed tp get useful data. Ignore any exit poll for the same reason you would an Internet poll: only assholes with an ajend... adjen... motive vote in them.

Screw the early returns. Republicans are still at work.

The Short Unhappy Life of a Russian Soldier: Why recruits die in 20-30 minutes
Interesting video. Some key parts: drones were responsible for 70-80% of all battlefield deaths in mid-2025, and I bet it's higher now. The Russian army is incredibly corrupt. Men get assigned to the most dangerous frontline units, the "Storm" units, unless they pay a superior $2,000 to be assigned to a different unit. Furthermore, there is often no real training for recruits -- commanders pocket the money that would have gone towards fuel and ammo costs incurred during training. Much "training" consists just of taking a single picture of soldiers doing something soldier-y, like fording a river, and publishing that as proof that the training was done. Even when it is done, training is only two weeks long.

Update to the video of a Russian soldier being spun around and thrown by the machinegun he was operating: The soldier was testing an old, archaic Russian machinegun intended to be mounted to a helicopter. The old gun was pressed into service as a possible anti-drone gun. The Russian army is generally depleted and being forced to bring a lot of old, unreliable weapons and platforms to the front.

FDA is providing an update regarding the sample of lettuce supplied by Taylor Farms de Mexico which was reported positive on July 18, 2026. Due to the complexity in detection of Cyclospora, FDA laboratory experts re-reviewed the sample results and have concluded that the finding does not represent true amplification and should be considered a false positive. Information about the sample has been removed from the July 18, 2026, update below. FDA has notified Taylor Farms and continues working with the firm to ensure product implicated in this outbreak has been removed from the market.
