« On the Trail of the Forger | Main | Why Did a Democrat Activist Seem to Know About the "Documents" Before Virtually Anyone Else? »

As Predicted: CBS News Executes Plan B

Dan Rather says:

"The truth of these documents lies in the signatures and in the content, not just the typeface and the font-style. Let me emphasize once again, these are not exact sciences. Not like DNA or fingerprints."

He is not-very-skillfully attempting to downplay the actual documents, in favor of a discussion of "their contents." In other words-- the documents may be forged, but they were forged to tell "the truth."

As many correspondents here have noted: This was also claimed by many in the liberal media in response to Fahrenheit 9-11. Sure, the film may be technically dishonest and misleading in parts; but that dishonesty is in service of a "higher truth."

Apparently CBS News will now expressly be pursuing "the higher truth" and de-emphasizing trivial "facts" and "verifiable evidence."

I have to say again: I did not seriously believe anyone would dare make such an argument a couple of days ago when I rhetorically postulated that this would be the next step.

But a week ago, I didn't believe a lot things I now understand to be the case.

As I've said, the epitaph of this story will be Everything was much worse than it seemed, even if you thought it was all pretty shoddy to begin with.

Hannity just said the CBS press release has been *once* *again* rescheduled, this time for 5 pm ET.

Posted by: Tongue Boy on September 15, 2004 03:42 PM

It's kind of like what I told the judge that one time: "The truth of these $20 bills, Your Honor, lies in the denomination, not in the purple ink or the portrait of John Wilkes Booth on the front."

Posted by: Paul Zrimsek on September 15, 2004 03:44 PM

As the poet asked, "how can we separate the dancer from the dance?"

How can we possibly evaluate the truth value of the content independent of the fact that they were created by a non-author, much later, with a biased view?

By the way, is this the new standard that CBS will be using when the shoe is on the other foot? When CBS is investigating?

Posted by: John S on September 15, 2004 03:48 PM

CBS: These documents are fake, but it doesn't matter, the stuff about Bush is true anyway.

Public: How do you know it's true?

CBS: These documents say so.

Public: But they're forgeries.

CBS: Maybe they are forgeries, but it doesn't matter, the stuff about Bush is true anyway.

Rinse. Repeat.

Posted by: hobgoblin on September 15, 2004 03:55 PM

Faithfully PARAPHRASED from the commie liberal afternoon radio show in my area:

'Its not really conclusive yet that these were forged...but if its true, CBS is committing the same sin that Bush did before going to war...listening to the evidence that he liked and disregarding the rest...'

The commentatore went on to mention that Killian's secretary is saying the content is true, though the memos were forged.

THEY NEVER STOP. WITH THE BULLSHIT.

I'm beginning to think that Rather's daughter and Ben Barnes (identified as a key document authenticator) are the principal links to the source, and her political career in the leftward wing of the DemonRatic Party is directly on the line and this forged smear is the price of her admission.

In any case, they will both be subject to the most exquisitely detailed microscopic inspections by bloggers and others at every future possibility.

Check out Lucianne. Your prediction confirmed.

Posted by: A on September 15, 2004 04:15 PM

If CBS manages to broaden this into a referendum on their entire story... they are still sunk. Did they happen to mention that (besides their key documents being faked) one of their key witnesses has jumped ship, and the other two are _major_ Kerry supporters with scandal ridden pasts. Its beyond hypocricy that CBS is investigating the political affiliations of opposing document examiners when they never bothered to mention that Ben Barnes is a Kerry campaign vice-chair. That is beyond bias, that is blatant willful manipulation of the political process. CBS is opening an even bigger can of worms. Look for the rats to start jumping ship, every peice of evidence they can produce is tainted badly. They will eventually be left with their unnamed sources and their phony documents and claiming that is enough. No chance.

I'm Ok Your Ok.

Do you remember that book on Transactional Analysis; The Parent, the Adult and the Child?

How about CBS, the Blogosphere and the Democrats:

Parent: Focus on a few documents in a story with bigger questions is irrelevant; I decide what's important and you better listen to me.

Adult: Speaking from the perspective of "journalism" isn't it the responsibility of a "Reporter" to ensure what is put forth as "News" is factually correct; We think truth is relevant.

Child: It's not fair, everytime we want to "do something" those pajama wearing neocons piss on our parade; You won't let us have our parade and it's not fair!?.

What's going on here is quite obvious.
Just a thought ~

I just peaked at Lucianne's site. You have got be shitting me. If CBS honestly believes that this will fly with anyone actually a member of Michael Moore's fan club, then the CBS logo needs to replace Oliver Willis's image on the Kool-Aid.

Posted by: physics geek on September 15, 2004 04:21 PM

Hey, didn't the LAPD and DA try the same thing with OJ? Since they really, really believed he was guilty, it was perfectly appropriate for the detectives to plant blood evidence to support that truth. Oh, wait a minute. That kind of backfired on them too, didn't it?

Posted by: Dacotti on September 15, 2004 04:54 PM

Not an exact science? Who else does he think he's kidding? Especially in older typewriters, the mechanical quirks of usage, metal fatigue, nicks and surface scratches on a font, have served to help convict more than one ne'er-do-well.

Whoever is offering the $10,000 for someone who can reproduce the memo on an old typewriter should feel fairly safe. I hope CBS gives an old Olympia typewriter to Dan as a going away present.

Mr. Rather,

Catch up please. The story has long since moved past the phase where one proves the documents fraudulent. They are fakes, and LAST WEEK this was proved (by people wearing pajamas) in cyberspace, planet blogosphere. Events are now unfolding at the virtual speed of the pajama-hadeen typing with computer keyboards not fossilized “journalists” pecking at vintage typewriters. Time in cyber-reality unfolds in seconds to minutes, not days to weeks. The story is now about how fakes got on the air as part of a "news story" in development for five years? Would you care to answer this question? I thought not. Then I guess President Bush is not obligated to answer your “questions.” Queries based on faulty data are faulty.

The president of CBS, Andrew Heyward, no longer even tries to contend that the documents are authentic. He describes them as “accurate” (sic). By this he means that they may be fakes, but the information is (in the opinion of CBS) accurate, so it doesn't matter if Lt. Colonel Killian wrote them or not. Instead, what matters to CBS is that they believe if he had actually written documents about these issues (which genuine documents they do not have), the content would have been consistent with the content of the documents that they do have (which were written by anonymous). Additionally, the contents of these supposed documents (for which CBS has been desperately and clumsily searching for many years) would be identical to the opinions of Mr. Rather, Mr. Heyward, and CBS, perfectly fitting the gaping hole of credibility in their five-year-old story. BUT, as CBS does not have those increasingly hypothetical authentic documents, the "accurate" papers they do have DO NOT FIT the yawning chasm of veracity needed to perfect their otherwise incomplete scoop (actually the old “news” upon which they have been fixated for half a decade). There are still people looking for El Derodo, Shangri-La, and the Lost Dutchman’s Mine, so Mr. Rather, Mr. Heyward, and CBS are in like company following their “accurate” maps/documents and chasing a futile fantasy.

Lt. Colonel Killian, an authentic American hero, is not available to defend his honor, or set the record straight. He is deceased, which is incredulously advantageous for CBS. The documents were written recently in MS Word, and not in 1972 and 1973. While they contain many clumsy mistakes and inaccuracies, there are allusions in the documents to real facts as established by real documents. MY SAINTED GRANNY, this is historical fiction. CBS is writing a “tell all” historical novel and not a “news” story. Is this the basis of a mid-autumn historical docu-drama? You bet your sweet pajamas, but thankfully, CBS “News” is not the sole author of the script. Authentic Journalists, weblogers, real participants in the actual events of 1972 and 1973, and scandalized authorities/experts are rewriting the clumsy plot scripted by CBS. The real story is developing and circulating all around us, much to the bewilderment and distress of Mr. Rather and his staff. There is nothing they can do to close Pandora’s Box. Box? What Box? They are not clever enough to trick the Genie back into the bottle. Ignore those Genies behind the curtain.

Mr. Rather and Mr. Heyward, using fiction as the basis for questions about Mr. Bush’s Texas National Guard record is like blaming ones spouse for doing something wrong in a dream. Any American voter who would fall for this contemptible fraud had already decided to vote for Mr. Kerry in the first place. This story is a coffin being built by CBS to bury its long dead and rotting credibility. The longer it stays at the center of the stage for this sad burlesque show, and the longer CBS continues to defend a story based on fictions, the longer the pajama-clad weblogers, and REAL journalist will continue to drive nails into it.

Oof. Reviewers do not like Scary Movie 6. The criticism I keep hearing is that the movie mistakes a reference for an actual joke. The movie (they say) keeps Key Jangling a reference to another movie (or some other pop culture ephemera) and you expect there to be a joke but nope, the Key Jangle was the joke. Other reviewers say that the promise that "no lines will be uncrossed" is a fake-out, and that the movie is bland and inoffensively corporate.
Whoops! I posted about Dan Goldman losing the NY congressional primary. He might do that, but it won't be tonight -- the primary isn't held until June 23.
One race to keep an eye on: the Levi's heir nepo baby and egregious "Designated Liar" Dan Goldman -- one of the Democrats from a safe district Democrats send out to spread their most indefensible lies -- may actually lose his lower Manhattan/Brooklyn set due to, get this, antisemitism in the Democrat primary electorate.
Antisemitism? In the anti-Nazi Democrat Party? Sounds crazy, I know, but apparently the anti-Nazi Party wants to eliminate Jews.

Democrat Senator Rueben Gallego, who served his wife with divorce papers when she was nine months pregnant so that he could marry his side-piece, counsels us that we should not judge Graham Platner for his infidelity because these things are personal matters, Racists:

Sahil Kapur
@sahilkapur

Sen. Ruben Gallego, D-Ariz., on Platner: "We know that Graham has lived not your typical political experience. He's been very clear and open with his wife, and they worked through whatever they worked through. At the end of the day, this man has had 60 more town halls than Susan Collins has. He's winning the polls, he's willing to accept that he has grown as a person, and I think we should accept that."

Gallego says the drip-drip of revelations won't harm Platner's campaign.

"I think you guys are all in a bubble here right now. The drip, drip that's actually happening is Americans are really, really hurt the fact that gas is still high, food is still high, they can't buy a home, you can't afford rent. They're not going to care about text messages and everything else like that that happened years ago, especially when it was worked out between spouses."

I like that he says that it's okay that Graham Platner sexted 12 different women within months of marrying the woman to sponge off her because he wasn't then "living a political life" -- the clear meaning being, "We all cheat, we just don't cheat when we're running for office, and he didn't know he was running for office when he was sending dicpics to half the women he ran into."
Except he was running: His own wife turned the sexts over to his campaign.
And obviously Reuben Gallego didn't let his "political life" get in the way of his extramarital dating life:

From the CA Post:

Spencer Pratt is now Karen Bass' biggest headache.

A bombshell California Post poll conducted with McLaughlin & Associates shows the reality TV star-turned-mayoral candidate has surged to a statistical tie with the incumbent mayor.

And voters blame homelessness, affordability and the direction of Los Angeles as the reason for turning on Bass.

Pratt now leads the field with 30.1% support, compared with 29.5% for Bass, setting up a razor-thin race heading into next week's primary.

Socialist councilwoman Nithya Raman sits in third place at 23.4%.

Thanks to beckster
Just like "Spartacus" Corey Booker, now that James Talarico is running for a higher office, he unveils his previously-unknown "girlfriend" and hooboy, it just so happens she used to work for him, and, get this, likes to "dance the night away" at gay bars
Gee I wonder where they might have met
Oh and she's a vegan
When Corey Booker needed a "girlfriend," he conjured up known LGBTQ activist Rosario Dawson. How convenient that when these guys need a girlfriend to show off to the normies that just happen to find an activist with a strong history of and interest in Supporting Gay Men
But seriously, this James Talarico romance with a Neighbor with a Uterus is a love story for the ages. The passion of their lovemaking is hotter than a blue star with a core of Primordial Sex Atoms created in the Big Bang
And just like that, #PunchANazi became Punch a Ballot for a Nazi
