Howie Kurtz: CBSNews "Document Expert" Muzzled; "Can't Talk" to Press

It's about one-sixth of the way down the document:

Although I have interviewed Rather and Andrew Heyward, the president of CBS News, and I said, well, look, who are your document experts? So they finally gave me the name of a handwriting expert in San Francisco, and I called him, and he says, I am muzzled, I can't talk, CBS has asked me not to talk to the press.

Via FreeRepublic-- again.

Drudge is reporting "DNC TO LAUNCH FRESH ATTACK ON BUSH GAURD DUTY..."

I'm sure the attack will be "fresh," as in "taking place at a time in the future distinct from a time in the past." I wonder if this "fresh attack" will add anything actually new to this ridiculously tiresome (not to mention irrelevant) discussion.

I mean, if the DNC *had* anything, wouldn't we have seen it by now? They obviously haven't had anything new to add to this story for months/years, until, of course, someone sloppily *invented* something new to add to the story.

Perhaps all the recent attention has convinced some brave ex-Texas Air National Guardsman to come forward with convincing proof that President Bush was beer bonging Hamm's with Spiro Agnew while he should've been repainting the base grass green.

I mean, c'mon-- we just told the DNC how we spotted this amateur forgery; I don't put it past the forgers to try again from a new angle (Hmmm, so maybe if we type this memo on an IBM Selectric this time-- yeah, that'll do the trick!).

Like Andrew Sullivan would say, I FEAR that this will continue to get uglier. Fine by me; it shuts Kerry's supporters up for a while until they can figure out what next to blather on about.

Cheers,
Dave

CBS is in disarray. To tell Kurtz the name of an expert, and then to muzzle the expert, is proof of incompetence. Everyone connected with the Kerry election campaign, including Rather and CBS, are overwhelmed right now, adrift.

Once the forgeries are established as forgeries, people will start tuning out any new discoveries, especially if there is any connection with the DNC, the Kerry campaign, or CBS.

At least now know that CBS means that, "hey the documents are Certaintly BullSshit."

Posted by: Rob on September 12, 2004 08:22 PM

Most people haven't heard of the forgery story, or the story that the forgery was featured in in the first place.

I am furious at the dinosaur media for what they are, corrupt beyond redemption and too pompous to take a good look in the mirror.

But unless I see some major networks stepping up and doing big prime-time TV exposes on the issue next week, its not even a blip in the American scene.

The other big networks (also corrupt) will be torn between wanting to destroy the competition and not wanting to endanger the election. Wonder which impulse will win?

OT: Hey, Ace, I don't know if this is a first for you, but you just got a hat tip in the Kerry Spot at NRO for your Bill Burkett scoop. Kudos!

Cool. I didn't know that.

On the subject of fresh attacks in the pipeline...

Bush has been accused of wearing a unit award he wasn't entitled to, a relevant photo is available here:

However, the Kerry campaign may have already tried and failed to get the story out. See

There's another aspect of CBS culpability in this whole sordid Docugate affair that's worth noting.

I see this morning (Monday) that the CBS News website is STILL spinning version of the truth for the rapidly-dwindling public who still believe them. They are saying that retired National Guard Maj. Gen. Bobby W. Hodges has changed his story. Oh really? We now know that to be completely untrue. What he said was that his comments were taken out of context, and that he never even saw the documents in question.

What this tells me is that CBS News has burned yet another bridge. The number of former TANG members whose corroborative support CBS is seeking must surely be dwindling, since they obviously can’t turn to Hodges any longer, and others (Burkett, e.g.) have effectively been discredited.

It seems to me that, at this rate, CBS will have to begin dredging up people who lived near the air base or who operated stores nearby, and will begin asking them “Did you ever see Lt. Bush in 1972?”

By the way, this message was typed and spell-checked using MS Word.

Though I'm not surprised, what is bothersome is;

GLORIA BORGER, CNBC: "I also used to do some work for "60 Minutes," and I can tell you that people there do not approach these things lightly. That there's a lot of good reporting that goes on. And that they did speak with someone about these documents. And as Dan said in his report, it's not only the documents. That there's a preponderance of evidence to support the charges that they were making"

Good Golly! CBS parades 3 obvious forgeries in a hit piece against the Prez, and all this gasbag can do is repeat Rather's lame excuse verbatim. I'm sorry Gloria, there is no story without the forgeries - the forgeries are the ONLY story here.

What is the UK Regime's plan for protecting the citizens from the savage criminals they've foisted on the populace? They offer NONE. They do, however, have a plan for protecting the savage criminals from the citizens: The citizens must STAY CALM and not get angry and not share videos of citizens being attacked by savage criminals.
The public keeps saying "protect us from the foreign savages you have imported against our wishes and over our objections" and the UK branch of The Regime keeps proposing plans to protect the foreign savages from the public. Soclose to what the public is demanding, just, you know, the complete opposite.
Just a thought: Maybe you wouldn't have to worry about the public attacking the savage criminals if you actually introduced a plan to protect the public from the savage criminals. Maybe they wouldn't feel as if it was necessary for them to protect the public through self-help.

Oof. Reviewers do not like Scary Movie 6. The criticism I keep hearing is that the movie mistakes a reference for an actual joke. The movie (they say) keeps Key Jangling a reference to another movie (or some other pop culture ephemera) and you expect there to be a joke but nope, the Key Jangle was the joke. Other reviewers say that the promise that "no lines will be uncrossed" is a fake-out, and that the movie is bland and inoffensively corporate.
Whoops! I posted about Dan Goldman losing the NY congressional primary. He might do that, but it won't be tonight -- the primary isn't held until June 23.
One race to keep an eye on: the Levi's heir nepo baby and egregious "Designated Liar" Dan Goldman -- one of the Democrats from a safe district Democrats send out to spread their most indefensible lies -- may actually lose his lower Manhattan/Brooklyn set due to, get this, antisemitism in the Democrat primary electorate.
Antisemitism? In the anti-Nazi Democrat Party? Sounds crazy, I know, but apparently the anti-Nazi Party wants to eliminate Jews.

Democrat Senator Rueben Gallego, who served his wife with divorce papers when she was nine months pregnant so that he could marry his side-piece, counsels us that we should not judge Graham Platner for his infidelity because these things are personal matters, Racists:

Sahil Kapur
@sahilkapur

Sen. Ruben Gallego, D-Ariz., on Platner: "We know that Graham has lived not your typical political experience. He's been very clear and open with his wife, and they worked through whatever they worked through. At the end of the day, this man has had 60 more town halls than Susan Collins has. He's winning the polls, he's willing to accept that he has grown as a person, and I think we should accept that."

Gallego says the drip-drip of revelations won't harm Platner's campaign.

"I think you guys are all in a bubble here right now. The drip, drip that's actually happening is Americans are really, really hurt the fact that gas is still high, food is still high, they can't buy a home, you can't afford rent. They're not going to care about text messages and everything else like that that happened years ago, especially when it was worked out between spouses."

I like that he says that it's okay that Graham Platner sexted 12 different women within months of marrying the woman to sponge off her because he wasn't then "living a political life" -- the clear meaning being, "We all cheat, we just don't cheat when we're running for office, and he didn't know he was running for office when he was sending dicpics to half the women he ran into."
Except he was running: His own wife turned the sexts over to his campaign.
And obviously Reuben Gallego didn't let his "political life" get in the way of his extramarital dating life:
