Whoops! Ace Screws Up Again -- Retracting Erroneous "Rather Parsing" Post

The original post was entirely in error. Rather actually does say he believes the documents are authentic:

DAN RATHER, CBS NEWS ANCHOR: I know that this story is true. I believe that the witnesses and the documents are authentic. We wouldn't have gone to air if they would not have been. There isn't going to be -- there's no -- what you're saying apology?

I missed that part. Sorry.

The rest of the post will be left here (as I shouldn't bury my errors), but it'll be beyond the jump. It's an incorrect story, and there's no point reading it except to have a laugh at me.

PS: Dave at Garfield Ridge didn't actually lead me down this path, although I cited him in the post as suggesting something similar. He didn't actually suggest what I did. So I'm wrong, he's not. Dave's point-- that Rather seems to be suggesting that however they came upon this story, the story remains true in any event, still looks good. Rather does seem to be de-emphasizing the documents he this past Wednesday put so much stock in.

Now, Phil on the other hand...

Did Rather Employ Clintonian Parsing?

[ERRONEOUS POST]

Phil and Garfield Ridge ask the same question: Did Dan Rather actually clearly declare that the documents are genuine?

Well-- not by a longshot, actually.

RATHER: Not even discussed, nor should it be. I want to make clear to you, I want to make clear to you if I have not made clear to you, that this story is true, and that more important questions than how we got the story, which is where those who don't like the story like to put the emphasis, the more important question is what are the answers to the questions raised in the story, which I just gave you earlier.

The story is true, he's claiming. And he distinguishes "the story" from "how we got the story." He doesn't aver that the documents are true-- just "the story" which flows from the documents (and those, he seems to allow, may in fact be fake).

I think we're going to need better than that, Mr. Rather. We need to know whether you specifically allege the documents themselves are genuine or if you admit they are fake (or may be fake).

I'm afraid we can't accept this "story" bullshit. First things first. Let's deal with the documents, then move on to "the story."

Whatever's left of it, at least.

Refusing to admit the documents are false while also refusing to say you stand behind them? Good Grief, Dan. That ain't gonna hold up very long at all.

It might not even hold up as long as your 60 Minutes "scoop."

Daily Kos is saying that although the CBS memo and the LGF memo show similar fonts when the words are shrunken down, the differences become apparent when you blow them up a bit.

So I performed an experiment on that point, and you can see the results at http://sobekpundit.blogspot.com/2004/09/forgeries-update.html

Posted by: Sobek on September 10, 2004 03:41 PM

I should have said you can read the results, because I don't have a scanner.

Posted by: Sobek on September 10, 2004 03:52 PM

You're right. I find the Clintonian parsing very wierd. When I first saw that Rather was defending the story, I figured his tactic was going to be "My expert v. your expert." With the implication that [begin wildly waving hands in the air] nobody really knows WHAT the "truth" is. [hands at your sides]

(cf. the moral status of the foetus, btw (by the way))

Rather probably could survive with that approach, since, as we obsessive cranks need to be reminded incessantly, this is, at its heart, a FONT SCANDAL. My bet is that few so-called normal people will be able to maintain any interest once the experts, counter-experts, and counter-counter-experts start Hardballing it up. The universal familarity (and annoyance) with Word's autocorrect feature MIGHT make me wrong, but I tend to doubt it.

That would be a sane (if deceitful) tactic to employ. This, "The story, based on the documents, which are forged, is true, even so," bullshit is "some of the people all of the time," when they need "all of the people some of the time"-quality stuff. Calling it Clintonian gives it too much credit. Clinton would handle this WAAAAAAAAAAY better.

Unless you think he handled it just the way he wanted to...

Did Clinton "pull a Sistani?"

Sorry, all. I blew it-- again.

Jeeze, I really can't crow about the triumph of the blogosphere and keep making these childish errors, can I?

I'm sorry.

Ace--

Don't kick yourself. I should have been more clear in my posting; I knew that Rather saw the documents as authentic. It's just that he also sees the story as authentic, regardless of the ultimate veracity of the documents. That's the point I was trying to get across-- and the point I think you ultimately made.

With a bit of loose shit in there, of course.

BTW-- that leads to another question of mine: who else did CBS News talk to? We already know they spoke with Killian's old CO, and he said they were accurate.

What I wonder is whether Dan has-- or just as important, THINKS he has-- an alternate source telling him the stories that these documents allege. Meaning, his ultimate point may be that he believes that even if someone went to the length of forging these particular documents, the story behind it still has witnesses.

Hey, I'm not saying it makes a damn lick of sense.
But that's why I'm not posting it on *my* website-- just yours ;-).

Cheers,
Dave
Garfield Ridge

No, your point works. My point was that he was standing behind "the story" but not the docs. He stands behind both, although, as you say, he feels one could fall and yet the other would remain true.

Ace,

Thanks for taking the trouble to comment on my blog where I linked to you. The fact that you didn't leave me twisting speaks volume about your intentions.

My intention is to one day be Mr. Ace O. Spades-Coulter.

I make no secret of this.

Dude, can't think of a loftier goal.

What is the UK Regime's plan for protecting the citizens from the savage criminals they've foisted on the populace? They offer NONE. They do, however, have a plan for protecting the savage criminals from the citizens: The citizens must STAY CALM and not get angry and not share videos of citizens being attacked by savage criminals.
The public keeps saying "protect us from the foreign savages you have imported against our wishes and over our objections" and the UK branch of The Regime keeps proposing plans to protect the foreign savages from the public. Soclose to what the public is demanding, just, you know, the complete opposite.
Just a thought: Maybe you wouldn't have to worry about the public attacking the savage criminals if you actually introduced a plan to protect the public from the savage criminals. Maybe they wouldn't feel as if it was necessary for them to protect the public through self-help.
