Rather Digs in Deeper Than an Arkansas Chigger on a Smellhound's Rump in the Middle of Ozark Winter (Whatever the Hell That Means)

I expected as much. Dan isn't going out like a chump with this debacle as his swan song. He wants to ride it out, hoping that he can get by on the occasional suggestion by an expert that it's possible that some funky high-end custom-job typerwiter could have, maybe produced documents kinda-sorta looking a little like these.

CBSNews has decided to roll the dice along with him, perhaps guessing that the rest of the Old Media will let the story go (a fair gamble on CBS' part, no doubt) and perhaps half out of a sense of loyalty to long-serving Liberal Dan.

But they're just making it worse for themselves. They can continue pinning their hopes on some fanciful tinkerer's super-typerwriter only until we get the records as to what typewriters they had on the base and/or we see the other documents we know Killian produced.

Dan Rather's best play was to admit forthrightly and apologetically he may have been conned. Now he's gambling it all on the chance that conservative magazines and FoxNews will forget this story by Monday.

I find that... unlikely.

Dan Rather Retirement Watch Update

At the tone, the Dan Rather Retirement Watch displays a time of

(bong)

11:44pm -- two minutes closer to midnight (retirement)

PowerLine Weighs In: Good stuff.

Summing up:

-- They think Rather is gone, too.

-- CBSNews isn't just standing by the documents; they've also put the kaibosh on the promised internal investigation.

-- As suspcted, we should keep our eyes on a certain corrupt Texas Democratic politician involved prominently in Dan Rather's hit-piece who shares the same initials as "Barry Bonds," "Betty Brant," or even "Bruce Banner." Powerline says he has an informer.

Sweet.

Even Joshua Micah Cougar Mellancamp Marshall Seems to Accept These are Forgeries: Read him if you want; but you'll burst a bloodvessel as he explains why the charges are nevertheless true even if the documents making those charges are proveably false. And he also claims that proportional-spaced typewriters were "widely" available in 1972, which doesn't jibe with what I've read.

But long story short-- he accepts that the documents are most likely fraudulent, and that the onus is on those producing the documents to authenticate them.

Since Joshua Micah Hezekiah Bucephalus Boutros-Boutros Marshall just cried uncle, that means it can only be a matter of time before his squawking parrot mimics him.

It reminds me of the people who say even though they know there are lies and distortions in Michael Moore's movies it speaks to a larger truth.

In other words, they're a bunch of apologists for something that is indefensible.

Note carefully - CBS is standing by its STORY. Not specifically standing on the authenticity of the documents, but the story told by them, and other sporces.

They may be starting to weave a tail that the story is buttressed by multiple sources of information, any one of which could collapse without making the STORY false.

Phil, please cite the language so I can steal your work and claim credit for myself.

In film school we studied that under "Socialist Realism of the early USSR." Whole documentaries were made from movie clips, so much so that even today a lot of them are shown as actualities when discussing the revolution. Makes you think when you relaize someone will go back to the NYT microfilm (and CBS DVDs) in 100 years when they do a paper on this election.

And lo, deeply did Joshua Michael Joktan begat Almodad begat Sheleph begat Hazarmaveth begat Jerah begat Hadoram begat Uzal begat Diklah Marshall did drink deeply of the well of Bath-Koolade, and great was the screeching that arose.

See, Josuah, call me anything you want, just don't call me late for supper, Micah Marshall is doing the same goddam thing I was talking about.

I mean, what are these people saying? That's it's okay to falsify and distort because it's true anyway, because they say it is, and no lack of proof is going to stop them?

Posted by: Ken J on September 10, 2004 02:43 PM

All I know is, those Arkansas chiggers do suck. Such fond memories of my youth...bleach baths, clear nail polish, itching...

Oh yeah, Rather is a douchebag.

Ace-- I think you're missing a big angle, something Drudge captured when he quoted CNN's interview with Dan this morning. Dan isn't just standing by the story-- just like Marshall a major netowrk anchor is arguing that the story still exists even if the memos are forgeries.

This is what I wrote on my site:

"RATHER: Not even discussed, nor should it be. I want to make clear to you, I want to make clear to you if I have not made clear to you, that this story is true, and that more important questions than how we got the story, which is where those who don't like the story like to put the emphasis, the more important question is what are the answers to the questions raised in the story, which I just gave you earlier."

Okay Dan, you've made it clear. You believe this story is true.

And you believe the story told by the memos is more important than how you got that story.

That's obvious, Dan. I agree, 100%. Self-evident fact.

*IF THE MEMOS ARE REAL, AND NOT FORGERIES.*

Danny baby, if these memos are fake-- fake, like "Lindsay Lohan's beautiful breasts"-fake-- then there *is* no story to raise "important questions." The story you wanted to report does not exist and thus goes away-- the story you now need to report is very different, and unfortunately one that I doubt 60 Minutes will be very eager to cover.

Cheers,
Dave

I think someone needs to ask:

"What's the frequency, Kenneth?"

Posted by: Flashman on September 10, 2004 04:40 PM

These documents came from the new (Clinton) operatives in the Kerry campaign. The DNC served as go-between for CBS and slipped the documents to a CBS producer. That's why McAuliffe is already admitting these are forgeries--he was part of the chain of custody.

As for Josh Marshall, I am coming to see he is a whore, and a cheap whore at that.

What is the UK Regime's plan for protecting the citizens from the savage criminals they've foisted on the populace? They offer NONE. They do, however, have a plan for protecting the savage criminals from the citizens: The citizens must STAY CALM and not get angry and not share videos of citizens being attacked by savage criminals.
The public keeps saying "protect us from the foreign savages you have imported against our wishes and over our objections" and the UK branch of The Regime keeps proposing plans to protect the foreign savages from the public. Soclose to what the public is demanding, just, you know, the complete opposite.
Just a thought: Maybe you wouldn't have to worry about the public attacking the savage criminals if you actually introduced a plan to protect the public from the savage criminals. Maybe they wouldn't feel as if it was necessary for them to protect the public through self-help.
