Update: Iraq Intel Led to Albany Terrorist BustWell. Who on earth could have foreseen this development? Apparently no one in the mainstream media. But a couple of bloggers were able to use their scary powers of recollection to remember that Ansar al-Islam was and is an Iraq-based terrorist organization. Did the media "forget" this fact or did they merely decide to suppress it? Did they really imagine we had forgotten where Ansar al-Islam was based out of? Or that we wouldn't figure it out if they didn't explicitly remind us? Anyway. Thank God for FoxNews: ALBANY, N.Y. — Information found in Iraq led federal investigators to become suspicious of an Albany, N.Y., mosque leader, FOX News has learned. Last summer, U.S. troops discovered Yassin Muhhiddin Aref's (search) name, telephone number and address in a book left behind in a vacated terrorist training camp, a U.S. official told FOX News. The book also revealed that Ansar al-Islam, the group running the camp, had given Aref a title: "the commander." Aref, 34, is the Imam of the Masjid As-Salam mosque in Albany, N.Y. He and one other mosque leader were arrested Thursday and charged with helping an undercover informant posing as a weapons dealer who was plotting to buy a shoulder-launched missile that would be used to kill the Pakistani ambassador in New York City. posted by Ace at 02:19 AM
Comments"Did they really imagine we had forgotten where Ansar al-Islam was based out of?" Yes. The media is only gradually catching on that their monopoly on news has vanished with the advent of the blog. They are still stuck in an old mind set in which what they say is truth, and no smarmy punk with a computer can change that. Posted by: Aaron on August 6, 2004 02:43 AM
But Ace, you miss the point. The Ansar guys were simple sheep farmers before the US's war of aggression drove them here to committ terror ... Posted by: Bill from INDC on August 6, 2004 06:34 AM
"But was there an Iraq/9-11 connection?" How many other plots do we have to tie to Iraq before the libs will stop asking the above inane fucking question. Thank God we "connected the dots" on this one. Goes to show that the system isn't in total disarray as some would have us believe. Posted by: sonofnixon on August 6, 2004 07:17 AM

But the Dems and liberals (I suppose I could just say Dems and cover both) have been assuring us that there is no link between secular Iraq and radical islamic terrorism. Surely, you're not implying that these people would attempt to score political points at the expense of our natoinal security? After all, they are the most patriotic people in America...according to them. Posted by: WindyCity on August 6, 2004 09:57 AM
Look, there was no evacuated 'training camp.' That was a country club very popular for weddings. The guy's name and address were written down because he sent a wedding gift and they needed to send him a thank-you card. Besides, Al-Quaeda are religious fanatics and everybody knows that Saddam Hussein was running a secular government. The two were natural born enemies. You people are really rabid fascists, you know that? Besides that, you are most likely all racists who just want to kill little brown people for their oil. You disgust me. It takes a sensitive and discerning intellect to navigate this complex world. Posted by: lauraw on August 6, 2004 10:07 AM
The moonbat talking point on Ansar al-Islam was that they operated out of the Kurd-controlled north and Saddam had no operational ties to them. That has now been expanded in moonbat lore; supposedly they were enemies of the secular Ba'athists. The facts are these: The group was permitted to operate out of the Kurd-controlled North on the proviso they make much trouble for the Kurds. And Saddam wrote a Koran in his own blood, the secular bastard, and added God is Great to the Iraqi flag in an effort to assuage his Islamo-nutters. Posted by: spongeworthy on August 6, 2004 10:34 AM

The Short Unhappy Life of a Russian Soldier: Why recruits die in 20-30 minutes
Interesting video. Some key parts: drones were responsible for 70-80% of all battlefield deaths in mid-2025, and I bet it's higher now. The Russian army is incredibly corrupt. Men get assigned to the most dangerous frontline units, the "Storm" units, unless they pay a superior $2,000 to be assigned to a different unit. Furthermore, there is often no real training for recruits -- commanders pocket the money that would have gone towards fuel and ammo costs incurred during training. Much "training" consists just of taking a single picture of soldiers doing something soldier-y, like fording a river, and publishing that as proof that the training was done. Even when it is done, training is only two weeks long.

Update to the video of a Russian soldier being spun around and thrown by the machinegun he was operating: The soldier was testing an old, archaic Russian machinegun intended to be mounted to a helicopter. The old gun was pressed into service as a possible anti-drone gun. The Russian army is generally depleted and being forced to bring a lot of old, unreliable weapons and platforms to the front.
