Swift Boat Vets Revisited: The McCain Factor

I stupidly forgot about this angle. The Prickly Princess is, of course, calling these Vietnam Vets liars because they have the audacity to call another Vietnam Vet a liar. Yeah, it's confusing, but that's McCain's brand of Straight-Talk (TM).

This will of course be used by the media to refute the charges (despite the fact that John McCain is, at best, a character-witness and not a fact-witness), or ignore them entirely, if they can get away with it.

And there's a limit to how much Bush can silently embrace the ad before we start hearing about the possibility of a McCain flip. So far, he's refused to condemn the ad. I think it's time to use the liberals' ridiculous non-sequitor answer to calls for condemnation of a statement: "I defend their right to express themselves..."

If that works for liberals as regards any statement no matter how outrageous, I don't see why it shouldn't also work for Bush.

Oh, wait. I guess I do see why: the liberal media has a rule that this non-sequitor dodge can only be used by liberals defending other liberals.

It's trickier than I first thought.

Update-- The O'Neill Factor: Beldar has done something few others have: he actually cross-examined John O'Neill during his testimony at a (non-political, non-sexy) trial. His conclusion:

But from my own first-hand experience cross-examining John O'Neill under oath, I can say that I fully believe that John O'Neill fully believes what he's saying — and that he's a damned credible witness in my opinion.

We'll see, I guess.

Liberal Hypocrisy Watch: Wizbang reports that the favored liberal counterattack consists of branding this ad illegitimate because it's being funded by an anti-Kerry 527 group.

He notes that the same liberals seem pretty rah-rah, "You go girl" when it comes to the $15 million spent in the past three months by anti-Bush 527's.

Hat tip to AllahPundit.

Update: Aaron fisks Salon's attack on the Swift Boat Vets.

I have a good friend who's a Vietnam vet who was spit on when he came home from there. He's a diehard Republican. But in discussions with him about the rumors about Kerry's war record (that have been circulating for a long time) -- that I wanted to shouted from the rooftops long before this -- my friend would say: "Kerry served his country and he cannot be faulted for that." So I think there is a code of honor among many vets not to bad mouth fellow vets no matter what.

However...on the topic of the treachery Kerry committed after the war, my friend is as vocal as anything. That is why I wish that aspect of Kerry was being attacked instead of his war record. His after war antics were highly treacherous and totally belie his credibility as a "hero". How can he be running as a war hero in a war he thought was criminal? His after war activities self-indict him as a "war criminal" not as a hero.

Anyone know if 60 Minutes is going to run a lead story on this?

Posted by: Golden Boy on August 5, 2004 02:44 PM

My basic reaction after reading that story:

God damn McCain to hell.

I know he doesn't like Bush, and can't forgive the actions of Bush's supporters in South Carolina. I don't even blame him, that whispering campaign/push poll was vile. But he is wrong this time.

As for the writer, well, it's the bloody Chronicle, which I can't read without risking cardiac arrest or a stroke. But it's a minority of Kerry's crewmates who support him.

God, I hate the Chronicle.

"...the favored liberal counterattack consists of branding this ad illegitimate because it's being funded by an anti-Kerry 527 group."

That's the angle being pimped over at salon.com. You can read the article, or you can read my fisking of it at www.sobekpundit.blogspot.com (or both, but why give salon the traffic?).

As a centrist liberal, I think the BS about condemning someone else for THEIR speech is ludicrous. I dont am not a Kerry fan, but I believe he represents my values and ideas better than Bush does. I believe McCain represents them better than both candidates, but then he isnt running. As for the Swift Boat Vets, I believe they are entitled to their opinion, just as the sailors who served DIRECTLY with Kerry do. Let the forum of public opinion make the decision as to who's story is accurate. I wasnt there, niether were any of the conservatives who are hyping the story or the liberals who are defending Kerry. Just as I didnt see Bush snorting Cocaine and chatting up the Southern Ladies during the time many of our young men were dying in Vietnam.
In the end, Kerry kind of bought this on himself by overplaying the hero card, but at the same time I have the sneaking suspicion that the HUGE revulsion that most conservatives have over the story is simply a response to the fact that their boy may have served but in vastly unequal proportions.

All right, an Ace link! This is huge. Now if only I knew how to get a counter, so I could see whether anyone clicks the link. I admit it; I suck as a blogger.

Posted by: Aaron on August 5, 2004 04:14 PM

Well, DA, on that last point, speaking as a VRWCer, I'd say you're wrong. My "HUGE revulsion" to Kerry stems from the fact that he is a calculating, arrogant, opportunistic, self-regarding, pretentious, phony who planned his exit from 'Nam from the beginning, and coupled a lucky break or two, used superficial "wounds" to get his ass out of country as fast as he could.

All the guys I know that spent time in ANY war zone are extremely reticent about it, NEVER refer to themselves as "heroic" (or let others imply it), and damn sure didn't FILM their "heroic" exploits. And NONE of them slandered their "band of brothers" upon returning stateside.

Kerry is the biggest prick on the earth.

Kerry represents your values?? What, daresay, could those be? The only "values" Kerry possesses are his limitless self-reference and preening narcissism. Good for you.

aaron,

happy to help. I'll add your blog to my roll this weekend or so, when I add a bunch of people.

Posted by: ace on August 5, 2004 05:26 PM

Let us not forget that Kerry gave the same "they don't represent me but they should be allow to speak" argument over the anti-Bush NY show that led to Whoopi Goldberg losing her diet endorsement contract.

As long as I'm shamelessly asking for blog hits, I should mention that I just did a round-up of liberal blogger reactions to the Kerry video story. Fiskings all around.

I'm interested in seeing how you all will spin this: Veteran retracts criticism of Kerry

Have at it! :-)

Mr. Anonymous, I don't think any spinning needs to be done. If you actually read the article, you will see Elliot saying:

"So, on the basis of all of the information that has come out, I have chosen to believe the other men. I absolutely do not know first hand."

Considering that he signed the affidavit (later repudiated) on the basis of what other people told him, and that the only thing he retracted the suggestion that he had personal knowledge of the incident, I say good for him, but it doesn't affect the testimony of those he was parroting.

Have you noticed how the news media is handling this story.
Remember when Carter was Pres., he was the smartest man in the world. Remember when the Clintons were in office, they were the smartest people in the world. Remember Reagan, he was so dumb that they had to tell him what to say. Bush 41 was saved from this b.s. because Quayle got in the way with potatoE. Now we have Bush 43 and yup, you guessed it, dumb as a pile of rocks.
Bush's national guard service has been attacked non-stop. Now Kerry's war record is being questioned. Do you think that the media is interested in getting at the truth? They will try to sweep this under the rug, true or not, just like B.Clinton, this is their guy.

Posted by: dreamryder on August 10, 2004 05:18 AM

You have to give it to Kerry. He joined the Swift boats because death rate was lower than the Army or the Marines plus the Navy was hungry for warriors with decorations and Kerry was a fine writer of tales. Now that we know he was "no hero" we see through his posturing. Regrettably the Navy accepted "tales" because they assumed he was "an officer and gentlemen". Now we have official records with the "tales" stamped "official". Hopefully, the "facts" are stubborn enough to bring this pretender down.

Funniest thing I've read about the Virginia mess. Back when they were hustling the referendum through the assembly both Senators, Warner and Kaine, advised them to go slow and play by the rules. Louise Lucas said she respected them but didn't need advice from the "cuck chair" in the corner. The gerrymandering was overturned and Louise is heading for the big house. Edward G. Correction: I wrote that Labour is losing 88% (now 87%) of the seats it is "defending." I think that's wrong. The right way to say it is the seats they are contesting -- that is, they don't necessarily already hold these seats, but they have put up a candidate to run for the seat. It's still very bad but not as bad as losing 87% of the seats they already held.

🚨ED MILIBAND [a Minister in Starmer's government] SAYS KEIR STARMER WILL RESIGN AS PRIME MINISTER

He has reportedly reassured Labour MP's that Starmer will be resigning following the disastrous results tonight

It's over
"The end of the two party system in the UK" as first the Fake Conservatives and now Labour chooses political suicide rather than simply STOPPING THE INVASION
Incidentally, the only reason this didn't already happen in the US is because of the Very Bad Orange Man (who is right on 85% of all policy calls and extremely, existentially right on 15% of them)
No political party that is NOT also a doomsday religious cult would EVER choose a cataclysmic loss -- and possible extinction as a party -- to support a toxically unpopular favoritism of NON-CITIZEN ILLEGAL MIGRANTS over actual citizen voters.

Only a cult does this.
Now they've lost 84%.
Annunziata Rees-Mogg
@zatzi
If this continues Labour loses 2,148 seats tonight.

That is much worse than the worst case predictions I’ve seen.

Cataclysmic

Update: They've now lost 88% of the seats they're defending. As I mentioned earlier, I think I heard that London will not bail them out, as many of those Labour seats will probably flip to "Muslim Independent" or Green. Detroit's 5am vote will not save them.
Yup, Labour is losing 80% of its seats...
The British Patriot
@TheBritLad

🚨 BREAKING: Labour have lost 80% of all seats contested as of 2:25 AM.<
br> If this continues, Keir Starmer will be out of office next week.

Reform has surged and projected to pick up between 1700-2100 seats.

Wow, up to 1700-2100 seats. It's not incredible that this is happening. It's incredible that the Davos crowd is so absolutely determined to privilege Muslim "migrants" over the actual native population who elects them, no matter how loudly the natives scream that they want to be prioritized, that they will gladly self-extinguish as a party rather than simply representing the interests of their own voters. Astonishing.
Remember, when they call other people "cultists" -- they are the ones so imprisoned in their social reinforcement and discipline bubbles that they will choose political death rather than dare upset the Karen Enforcement Officers of their cult.
Update: Now they've lost 83% of the seats they were defending.

@DPJHodges

Reform are basically wiping Labour out in the North. It's not a defeat. It's not even a rout. Labour are simply ceasing to exist.

Nick Lowles
@lowles_nick

Tonight’s results are calamitous for Labour. Not just for Keir Starmer's leadership, but for the very future of the party
STARMERGEDDON: In early returns, Reform gains 135 seats, Labour loses 90, the Fake Conservatives lose 36 (and I didn't even know they could fall any further), the Lib Dems lose 4, and the Greens gain 6. Note that the only other party gaining seats is the Greens and they're only gaining a handful of seats.
Update: Reform now up 145, Labour down 98.
Labour projected to lose Wales -- where they've ruled for 27 years.
Fulton County Georgia just discovered 400 boxes of ballots for Labour
Update: REF +156, LAB -107, CON -45
Brutal: In four out of five council seats where Labour is defending, they've lost. 80%.
I'm sure it's not this simple, but Reform is straight taking Labour's and the "Conservatives'" seats. They've lost almost exactly what Reform gained. If understand this right (and warning, I probably don't), all of London's council seats are up for election, and Labour might lose hugely there, as their old voters abandon them for Reform, Muslim Indenpendents, and the Greens.
REF +190, LAB -134, CON -56.
Updates on the Labour collapse in council elections -- which wags are calling #Starmergeddon -- from Beege Welborne. There are about 5000 seats up for grabs, Labour is expected to lose 1,800, Reform will probably gain 1,580, up from... zero. So this would be more than that.
People claim that while Labour has adopted the Sharia Agenda to appeal to the million Muslims it allowed to migrate to the country, those voters are ditching Labour to vote for the Muslim Independent Party or the Greens. Delicious. This shadenfreude is going straight to my thighs.
Oh, and if Starmer loses about as badly as expected, Labour will toss him out of a window Braveheart style and replace him. He will announce he is resigning to spend more time with his Gay Ukrainian Male Prostitutes.
