Another Leak: You Know This One Hurts Republicans, Because They're Talking About the Information Leaked Rather than the Leak ItselfShortly after 9/11, some politician told the press about some phone conversation intercepted the day before, saying something like "The feast is set" or some other codephrase later determined to mean "the attack is on." This was a bad thing, because the fact that we interecepted a call is itself a closely-guarded secret. I think Bush, Cheney, and/or Rumsfeld sternly rebuked Congress for this leak. It was just leaked that a Senator is now the focus of investigation in the case. That Senator -- Richard Shelby of Alabama, on the Senate Intelligence Committee. Republican. Keith Olbermann reported this on his godawful show tonight. Oddly enough, there was no talk of this leak impugning a Republican being "timed," "suspiciously" or otherwise, to take the focus off of Sandy Berger, or to give the Democrats a laugh line during their convention. Nope. The only story was the information conveyed by the leak. Not the leak itself, nor the likely political affinity of the leakers, nor the possible motive or agenda of the leakers. No aspersions whatsoever were cast upon those supplying the information; indeed, they weren't even mentioned at all. Funny, isn't it? (P.S., Keith: Craig Kilbourne called. He says he wants his act back. Oh wait, that isn't even Craig Kilbourne's act, he stole it from David Letterman. And, actually, wait again: neither man wants the act back, because you're so howlingly unfunny they say you've "tainted" the act and turned it into something ugly and hateful. On the other hand, Margaret Cho wants to have drinks.) posted by Ace at 01:21 AM
CommentsI'm not aware of the story behind this [aside from what you provided]. Are there any weblinks related to this new development? Posted by: Cpl. Menno on July 24, 2004 02:02 AM
A cryptic message hinting at an unknown event at an unknown time and place. Wow. In unrelated news, Sandy Berger personally kiboshed four (FOUR!!!) attempts to whack UBL when we had a chance. But really isn't the REAL story about the suspicious timing of the NYSun story that reference Bergers failures. Of course it is. Posted by: sonofnixon on July 24, 2004 02:49 AM
If a news story breaks on Olberman's show, does anybody notice? Posted by: Christopher Cross on July 24, 2004 01:46 PM
I saved a quote from a Chris Hitchens interview on the subject of Orwell, which sums up the Dems' reaction to the Berger affair perfectly: [Hitch:] "I think Hannah Arendt said that one of the great achievements of Stalinism was to replace all discussion involving arguments and evidence with the question of motive. If someone were to say, for example, that there are many people in the Soviet Union who don't have enough to eat, it might make sense for them to respond, 'It's not our fault, it was the weather, a bad harvest or something.' Instead it's always, 'Why is this person saying this, and why are they saying it in such and such a magazine? It must be that this is part of a plan.' Media bias and senationalism are as old as, well, the media:
![]() That was written by Denny O'Neill and illustrated by, get this, Frank Miller. Editor to the Stars Jim Shooter was in charge at the time. I always thought the gag was original to the comic book, but in fact the "Threat or Menace" headline was a satirical joke about media bias and sensationalism for a long while. The Harvard Lampoon used it in a parody of Life magazine: "Flying Saucers: Threat or Menace?"

ANOTHER LEFT WING ASSASSIN ATTEMPTS TO KILL TRUMP
If I understand this, the left-wing Democrat assassin attempted to get into the White House Correspondents Association dinner, and was stopped at the magnetometers, which detected his gun. I guess he pulled out the gun and was shot by Secret Service agents. Erika Kirk was present.
