Am I the only one who hated Catch-22? In fact, it is one of only about a half dozen books in my life that I started but was unable to finish. Perhaps I was too young when I picked it up, and should give it another try.

Give it another try. I always tell people reading it that the first hundred pages are a bitch. He's got a very intrusive style and his manner of telling the story (all mixed up in time) is reader-unfriendly. He repeats himself an awful lot, and his sense of humor is, at first, not really all that funny.

But when you get through that, the book suddenly becomes one of the funniest you'll ever read into your entire life. I can (and sometimes do) reel off some of my favorite bits from the book, which are laugh-out-loud funny.

Some critic said that Moby Dick was, for a hundred pages, one of the worst-written and amateurish books ever published, but that it suddenly all comes together past that point. I don't know if that's true -- I still hate that book, from what little of read of it (the Cliff's Notes weren't very good, either) -- but I can attest there's a similar transformation when reading Catch 22.

Once you get the humor, once you have a rough outline of the actual chronology of events in your head, etc., it's just a great book.

And, by the way, once you "get" his style and humor, the first 100 pages are good, too. They're just not good the first time around.

I loved that book. So much so that I completely ignored the prevalent defeatism.

i had a nightmare of a time getting through catch-22, i must've put it down then picked it up again five times, but now that i've finished it i'm glad i made the effort.

worth the time, it's not easy but it is very, very good.

and i think it may help if you have some experience with the military, it's one of those books where you go "i know that guy!"...and sometimes, "i am that guy!" very insightful (if scathing, and entertaining) look into military life, and life in general

It also helps if you imagine John Kerry playing Col. Cathcart. ("When I voted for the war I thought it would be a real FEATHER IN MY CAP!!!! with swing voters. But it turned out to be a real BLACK EYE!!!! with primary voters.")

I kind of liked the book - I mean the writing is brilliant, but I found the underlying tone to be rather snotty.

It's Clevinger, not Havermeyer.

The bit about telling the same story several times is ont important theme of the book. Each time the story is retold, it is told with more detail.

It also becomes less funny and more tragic each time (the Snowden scene comes to mind).

Clevinger, right. Thank you. I knew Havermeyer didn't sound right. Havermeyer was a pilot or something. One of Yossarian's sort-of friends.

What ever happened to Clevinger? Was he booted out after the disciplinary hearing? He disappears during training and never makes it to Malta.
