Jobless Claims Lowest in 4 YearsPretty good, but the article is loaded up with (apparently on-the-level) caution that not a whole lot can be read into this particular number, because there's some sort of seasonal adjustment in the car-parts-manufacturing sector that's a little sketchy.
The cowbell has been discounted due to the potential unreliability of the reading. Johnny Coldcuts Says: Don't be such a fuckin' pussy. You're really starting to piss me off, asscracker. Better it shows a 4-year-low than a two-year-high. Ya frigging dickweed. You fairy. In Other Positive Economic News: Arnold King explains why the boom in productivity -- the best four-year increase in productivity since at least 1960 -- is a good thing. He then turns to the question of why the media refuses to report on it: The other reason that the productivity story is not big news is that the current Administration is unpopular with the media. As much as the media is averse to reporting good news, I think that productivity would receive greater coverage if the big gains were taking place on a Democratic President's watch. The upbeat productivity data would "fit" the story of competent Democratic stewardship of the economy. But it would spoil the narrative of the Bush Administration as bumbling and Hoover-esque to point out that the most fundamental measure of our economic strength is shooting through the roof. It's not that I think that high productivity growth is a partisan story that reflects well on President Bush. But the failure to report on the phenomenon is a partisan story that reflects poorly on the ability of the press to rise above its biases and keep the public informed. posted by Ace at 03:40 PM

Johnny Coldcuts is my hero. Seriously. I hope he stays around for a while. Hell, he is more deserving of a blog than Smitty. Posted by: Senator PhilABuster on July 8, 2004 08:56 PM
I wish I had a Johnny Coldcuts as my alter ego. When I go off on a RCOB tangent, I could just say it was him. Not me. I don't rant like that. It was Johnny. Posted by: lauraw on July 8, 2004 09:30 PM
I can vouch for the validity of the auto-sector adjustment to the claims number. I'm a macro research analyst for a large asset management firm (you'd know the name) and I can assure you, the 310K number is almost entirely due to the crappy seasonal adjusting factors. The problem is that the auto factories used to all shut down at the same time to re-tool for the next year's models. Now they spread out the shutdowns over about a month, but the statistically derived seasonal factors still reflect the synchronized shutdowns. It will most likely be back up to the 340K area next week. Posted by: morpheus on July 9, 2004 08:37 AM
Of course, none of that changes the fact that the economy has been screaming for at least a year now, despite the incessant carping of the Democrats. The only argument that people in my business have is not whether the economy is in good shape or not but rather when will it slow down, and by how much? Posted by: morpheus on July 9, 2004 08:44 AM

Update to the video of a Russian soldier being spun around and thrown by the machinegun he was operating: The soldier was testing an old, archaic Russian machinegun intended to be mounted to a helicopter. The old gun was pressed into service as a possible anti-drone gun. The Russian army is generally depleted and being forced to bring a lot of old, unreliable weapons and platforms to the front.
