"It was the finest thing I have seen or hope to see this side of heaven."
It is so very, very easy to be angry and upset at the state of the nation, and there are many good reasons why that is a rational response. Anyone with a lick of sense will realize that America is struggling with huge problems, and it is entirely possible that a large part of America simply doesn't care about what we were, and sees our history as the greatest nation on earth as a flawed view of an irredeemable nation.
I think they are wrong, but for tonight I would prefer to focus not on what is wrong, but what was so glorious about our country. Will we return to that? I have no idea, but we have a template for success that it would behoove us to respect.
Chaplain Corps History: The Four Chaplains
Once topside, the chaplains opened a storage locker and began distributing life jackets. It was then that Engineer Grady Clark witnessed an astonishing sight. When there were no more lifejackets in the storage room, the chaplains simultaneously removed theirs and gave them to four frightened young men. When giving their life jackets, Rabbi Goode did not call out for a Jew; Father Washington did not call out for a Catholic; nor did Fox or Poling call out for a Protestant. They simply gave their life jackets to the next man in line. One survivor would later say, "It was the finest thing I have seen or hope to see this side of heaven."
This is a glimpse of American Exceptionalism...that unique blend of quiet faith and incredible courage and the rare ability to face the unknown. Our country was created out of nothing by people who were willing to face unimaginable hardship and by dint of hard work and faith and talent and energy and luck (both good and bad), they created the greatest country on earth.
Will we remain that country? Who knows, but we have the pedigree to make it so!
