The historical-- and religious -- inspirations for Tolkein's lembas bread/"waybread." If you don't have the time, it's based partly on the holy communion wafer, which is said to provide spiritual sustenance, just as the lembas bread, Merry says, gives "heart." It's also based on stuff like WWI era hard-tack.
Interesting: He claims that the first waffles were created as people were experimenting with the grills that made communion wafers, and claims that "waffles" is related to "wafers." I don't know if that's true, but the words "wafer" and "waffle" do seem related.
Floating bridge. This is in Iceland, where the ice-melt in spring floods valleys that are otherwise dry for most of the year, so no permanent bridge is needed. I just totally made that up but it's probably something like that.
