I first went deer hunting when I was 16 years old. My father, younger brother and I headed to my Mom & Dad's place "Up North". My first deer hunt saw me with my 16th birthday present a used Sears Ted Williams .30-30 lever action.
Nope, never did see or shoot a deer with it that first season. I resumed deer hunting several years later at my Aunt & Uncle's farm "Down South".
Over the years I shot numerous deer with that old lever action. Henry Rifles sure have made an impact over the past few years in the lever action category.
Deer hunting isn't the same anymore. My Aunt & Uncle moved out of state. My Father gave up deer hunting. The Fabulous Mrs. Mis. Hum & I purchased some hunting land "Up North" where we built a small camp. The camp originally had 4 hunters. 2 have passed on and the 3rd gave up hunting. That leaves me.
Deer hunting is more that sitting out in the woods or driving through fields hoping to shoot the "Big one". It's the camaraderie at the kitchen table at the end of the day. Nothing like reporting on the day's activities, retelling stories, eating and drinking.
We are at Camp Misanthrope this weekend preparing for next Saturday's Wisconsin Gun Season Deer Opener. Over 600,000 men, women and children take to the forests and fields of Wisconsin with rifles, shotguns and handguns.
I'll hunt this year at least 2 days. Maybe a 3rd. The Fabulous and the pups are coming up and we plan to spend a quiet week up at Camp. I no longer have to harvest a deer to count the season a success.
