Neilsen Ratings Under Question? Yeah, that's the problem [TJM]
The Media Rating Council is not very happy with Neilsen right now.
The Media Rating Council, a government-founded, industry-supported organization that monitors various media stakeholders, fired the latest shot in the long war over measurement. It ripped Nielsen’s “deep-rooted, ongoing performance issues” in a statement this evening. That followed Nielsen’s declaration yesterday that it would seek to take a hiatus from the accreditation process administered by the MRC.
With the anemic box office numbers we're seeing with the pandemic (it hasn't been a pandemic since Spring of last year, but whatever) as well as decreased attendance at sporting events and decreased streaming numbers, why do we think that television would be different?
The media has set itself up as the arbiter of what is good, and they have declared America to be bad. I believe that America got shaken out of its routine with covid, and in that shakeup, we've come to some conclusions about our entertainment habits. We don't need weekly television sitcoms. We don't need live awards shows populated by celebrities who talk all the time about how much they hate us. We don't need live sports where those who hate America are given prominent coverage.
Maybe the problem isn't us. Maybe it's not Neilsen. Maybe the product has grown stale and unpalatable.
