The painting was stolen from its owner, Nora Stiasny, by the Nazis in Austria in 1938. She and others in her family were "deported to Poland" (a euphemism for: sent to a concentration camp) where they were murdered.
It has been on display at the Musee d'Orsey since the 1980s, and France finally got around to returning it to the heirs of the Stiasny family.
