Beginner Problem - Black To Play (1327)
Goal: Black to force mate in 2 moves
Hint: Underpromotion is not requred
For extra credit, find a checkmate that uses underpromotion. You will need to take an extra move.

Intermediate Problem - White To Play (1306)

Hint: This is one of those positions I call 'zugzwangy'

Advanced Problem - White To Play (1321)

Dress Pr0n For The 'Ettes:
This is a pic of 'ette April, who e-mailed it to me last week. She tells me:
[I]t's a lovely dress (and it still fits!) , and a fun memory for me...black rayon crepe...with a white satin neckline overlaid with black lace, and bordered with black velvet. I estimate the vintage to be '40's.
Iceland Sweater Girl #1
Iceland Sweater Girl #2
(I've shown this yellow dress before, but I've never found a photo of it where she's smiling. Until now.)

Problem Solutions
Beginner Problem - Black To Play
1q4k1/6pp/2B1p1r1/3p3b/3NP3/3Q3P/Pr4p1/RR4K1 b - - 0 1
1...Qh2+
2.Kxh2 g1=Q#
or, if you want to use touch of elegance, you can win with an underpromotion: 2...g1=B+ 3.Kh1 Rh2#
Intermediate Problem - White To Play
8/8/7p/5Kbk/6p1/8/6P1/R7 w - - 0 1
1.Rh1+ Bh4
2.Rh3 g3
If 2...gxh3 then 3.g4#
3.Rh2 gxh2
4.g4#
Advanced Problem - White To Play
r7/p4k2/1b3B2/3pP3/4qPQ1/8/2P3PP/5b1K w - - 0 1
It's basically a king hunt, but you can force mate in 5:
1.Qd7+ Kg6
Not 1...Kf8? 2.Qe7+ Kg8 3.Qg7#
2.f5+
At this point,there are 2 mate-in-5 lines, and a mate-in-4:
2...Kh6 3.Qg7+ Kh5 4.Qg5#
or
2...Kh5 3.Qf7+ Kg4 4.Qg6+ Kf4 5.Qg5#
or
2...Qxf5 3.Qg7+ Kh5 4.g4+ Qxg4 5.Qh7#
Hope to see you all next week!

Note: that cryptic line of letters and numbers you see underneath each board diagram is a representation of the position in what is known as "Forsyth-Edwards Notation", or F.E.N. It's actually readable by humans. Most computer applications nowadays can read FEN, so those of you who may want to study the position, you can copy the line of FEN and paste into your chess app and it should automatically recreate the position on its display board. Or, Windows users can just "triple click" on it and the entire line will be highlighted so you can copy and paste it into your chess app.
