Science isn't dead, but it is ailing - part 4 [Jay Guevara] »

Saturday Afternoon Chess thread 11-28-2020
WGM(?) Elizabeth Harmon (USA)
As always, the chess/dress pr0n thread is an open thread, so there is no such thing as an off-topic comment. This is the week where we schedule a fishing thread, but I don't see one in the queue, so perhaps we won't be getting one. I do see one waiting, but it has nothing to do with fishing.
Pic Note
For those of you who don't get Netflix, this is a publicity still of the actress Anya Taylor-Joy from the series The Queen's Gambit, that I mentioned last week. Surprisingly, it's turning out to be the most watched series Netflix has ever shown. It never mentioned what exact title the main character might have achieved, so I just guessed she might be at WGM strength.
Incidentally, Ms. Taylor-Joy has naturally blond hair. But in the pre-production meetings, it turned out that everybody involved, the actress, the screenwriter, the director, etc., all had come to the conclusion independently that the character should have red hair. Don't know why. Perhaps they felt that it contributed to her uniqueness as a character.
Beginner Problem - Black To Play (1240)
Goal: Black can force mate in 2 moves
Hint: Move order is important
r1b1k1nr/1p2pp2/p2p2p1/P1pN3p/2P1P3/1nqP2P1/R1N1KP1P/1Q3B1R b kq - 0 1
Intermediate Problem - White To Play (1239)
This problem has 2 solutions. Try to find both.
Goal: White can force mate in 4 moves
Hint: The rooks don't move, but their influence is yuuge

Advanced Problem - White To Play (1135)
Your job here is to find 3 mating lines, each starting with a different first move. There may be more than 3. But each mating line must <=4 moves. I think this is kind of a tricky position.

Problem Solutions
Beginner Problem - Black To Play
r1b1k1nr/1p2pp2/p2p2p1/P1pN3p/2P1P3/1nqP2P1/R1N1KP1P/1Q3B1R b kq - 0 1
1...Bg4+!
Admittedly 1.Qd2+ is tempting, but then 2...Bg4 is not mate as now 2.Kf3 is possible. The correct move order is *first* the bishop, *then* the queen.
2.f3 Qd2#
Intermediate Problem - White To Play
r3k1r1/ppp1np2/5p1Q/2b2N2/4B1P1/2p4P/qP3P2/2KRR3 w - - 0 1
Answer:
1.Bc6+! bxc6
Forced. The knight on e7 is pinned and can't take the bishop.
2.Ng7+ Rxg7
Not forced. But if 2...Kf8 then 3.Ne6+ Ke8 4.Nxc7#. This is the 2nd mating line.
3.Qh8+ Rg8
4.Qxg8#
Advanced Problem - White To Play
7r/8/8/2Bp4/5Q2/8/6bN/2K4k w - - 0 1
Here's the main line, which is a mate in 3:
1.Nf1 Be4
2.Qf2 d4
3.Ng3#
I found 2 other mate-in-4 lines:
1.Qf2 Kxh2
2.Bd6+ Kh1
3.Qe1+ Bf1
4.Qxf1#
and:
1.Qe3 Kxh2
2.Bd6+ Kh1
3.Qe1+ Bf1
4.Qxf1#
Hope to see you all next week!

Note: that cryptic line of letters and numbers you see underneath each board diagram is a representation of the position in what is known as "Forsyth-Edwards Notation", or F.E.N. It's actually readable by humans. Most computer applications nowadays can read FEN, so those of you who may want to study the position, you can copy the line of FEN and paste into your chess app and it should automatically recreate the position on its display board. Or, Windows users can just "triple click" on it and the entire line will be highlighted so you can copy and paste it into your chess app.
