Thursday Overnight Open Thread - August 14, 2025 [Doof]

Howdy Hordelings! Oh - you were expecting an ONT from Weird Dave? Well...

doof-dave-not-here.jpg

That's right. All your Thursday night ONT are belong to me now!

In case you missed this from Weird Dave last week:

Personal Note

This is the last Thursday ONT I will be writing. I've been doing this for almost ten years, I'm tired boss. Don't worry, I'll still be kicking your weekend off right by meeting your meme needs on the Friday ONT, but starting next week Thursdays will be covered by the eminently capable Doof. It's been a pleasure and an honor to entertain you Morons all these years.

So, time to step on in and see how "eminently capable" this Doof guy really is!

Happy Anniversary, Fellow Rush Nerds!

What anniversary you ask? On August 14, 1974 - Neil Peart Plays His First Show With Rush

This August concert was a short, low-key opening slot for Manfred Mann's Earth Band and Uriah Heep. (The trio isn’t even listed on an ad promoting the show.) The band reportedly opened with “Finding My Way.” Poor-quality audio of the song doesn’t seem to betray the band’s nerves, although it does give a nice snapshot of Lee’s astonishing vocal range and Peart’s already ferocious style.

***

Peart died in 2020. His final concert with Rush had taken place on Aug. 1, 2015 -- roughly 41 years after Peart's fateful show debut.

WTF Did I Just Read?

I may not be the sharpest knife in the drawer, but I do think I am smarter than the average bear. After reading this - I feel unsmart.

Physics faces its greatest challenge: a new theory argues that time has three dimensions and space is like "an add-on"

doof-space-thingy.jpg

Theories about space and time have always been the great misunderstood ones for the general public, but one of the great mysteries to work on and investigate for physicists and scholars of these subjects.

For many years, researchers have intertwined additional spatial dimensions, exotic particles or string-like objects into a single narrative. In each of these cases, one of the issues was resolved, but another was left unanswered.

A new theory has now been put forward that could dismantle everything we have taken for granted so far, and that is that the approach to space and time, argued in the ticking of the clock, may be much stranger and richer than the simple advance through seconds, minutes and hours.

***

All particles, fields and even energy itself emerge as different ways in which the triple-layer rhythm can change. "My work transforms the concept of an interesting mathematical possibility into a physically testable theory with multiple independent verification channels"

Reaching for a lifeline here. Can anyone of you super smart Hordelings summarize this article for the rest of us?

Another One From Our Younger Days is Gone

A fun show from a simpler time. Can we take a moment to appreciate the acting chops one needs to play that kind of deadpan role? She did it quite well - especially for someone as young as she was at the time.

Not related for any reason other than it's a clip from a fun show from a simpler time

Divisive Issue?

Why does this bother people??

doof-backin-parking.jpg
Click for a thread on X

I will back into a parking spot almost always. I do it for various reasons - none of them are for attention. Better visibility and easier maneuverability when leaving my parking spot are the main reasons. I'd also rather do my reversing moves when I've already been driving, as opposed to when I first get into my vehicle. The only times I do not back in are when I need easier access to the cargo area - like loading bags from the grocery store or bulky items from Home Depot or somewhere similar.

What's interesting to me is how much it seems to bother people who don't park this way. Numerous people I know have mentioned how much they hate "backer inners". The comments in that X thread demonstrate how emotional this is for people who are opposed to back-in parking. While it seems to me that those of us who prefer "combat style" parking, don't get emotional about those who prefer pull-in style. Park however you want. But even pull-in parkers are highly likely to pull-through if the spot in front of their spot is open. Why? Because it's more convenient to exit! Thus proving the point that the front facing out is the better way to park! So why get worked up over those of us who back in to our spots?

Where do you land on this?

On The Subject of Vehicles

This is kewl!

Estonian Theater Stages Unique Romeo and Juliet Play with Construction Vehicles as Actors

doof-Romula-ja-Julia.jpg

Estonian theater Kinoteater recently staged one of the most unusual versions of Shakespeare’s “Romeo and Juliet,” featuring heavy-duty vehicles as actors and a limestone quarry as the stage. “Romula ja Julia” was a nearly wordless performance that relied on the movements and interactions of dozens of vehicles to convey the classic love story. Romeo was represented by a rally truck, while Juliet was a red Ford pickup truck, and the climactic duel between Tybalt and Mercutio was interpreted by two excavators dangling their metal buckets in front of each other. Designed as one big experiment about what it means to stage a Shakespearean classic today and whether artists can find new ways to do it, Romula ja Julia attracted international attention because of its unusual cast.

Check out the whole story at the link. It includes a video of the performance.

On the subject of Romeo and Juliet, I'd like to callback to T Rex's top-notch ONT from last night where he featured the topic of cover songs. I scanned the thread and comments and did not see any mention of this song:

Romeo and Juliet -
Original studio version by Dire Straits

Dire Straits Live At The Hammersmith Odeon, London, July 1983

Outstanding cover version from The Killers
