Beginner Problem - White To Play (Chess 2064)
White obviously has a yuuuge advantage, but how quickly can you FINISH HIM!?
Goal: White can force mate in 2 moves
Hint: Get the rook into position first

Intermediate Problem - Black To Play (1164)
Goal: Even if White plays the best move each time, Black can mate in 4
Hint: The 2-move mate is easy to see, but White can drag it out a bit by blocking

Problem Solutions
Beginner Problem - White To Play
![20200711 - Problem 1.jpg](http://ace.mu.nu/archives/20200711 - Problem 1.jpg)
6B1/8/N3p3/4k3/6Q1/8/3R4/3K4 w - - 0 1
Sorry, this one was a bit tricky. Probably should've been an intermediate problem. The first move is not at all obvious.
1.Rd6! Kxd6
2.Qxe6#
Not taking the rook doesn't get Black anything:
1.Rd6! Kf6
2.Rxe6#
Either way, it's a mate in 2.
Intermediate Problem - Black To Play
![20200711 - Problem 2.jpg](http://ace.mu.nu/archives/20200711 - Problem 2.jpg)
b3rb1k/8/4pN2/1p2Pq2/2p4p/N1P3pP/1PQ3P1/4RBK1 b - - 0 1
1... Bc5+ 2. Re3
Instead of blocking with the rook, if you saw 2.Kh1 Qxh3#, that's fine, that's what most human players see. Blocking with the rook only gets you a different way to lose.
2...Bxe3+
3.Qf2 Qxf2+
4.Kh1 Qg1#
Advanced Problem - White To Play
![20200711 - Problem 3.jpg](http://ace.mu.nu/archives/20200711 - Problem 3.jpg)
1NK5/8/5k2/4bp2/P5p1/8/6PP/8 w - - 0 1
Another example of better living through simplification:
1.Nd7+ Ke6
2.Nxe5 Kxe5
3.g3!
This is important. Pushing the pawn would be premature here: 3.a5 f4 4.a6 f3 5.gxf3 gxf3 6.a7 f2 7.a8=Q f1=Q for the draw. Advancing the pawn to g3 prevents Black counterattacking with his own pawns.
3...f4
4. gxf4+ and wins
Hope to see you all next week!

Note: that cryptic line of letters and numbers you see underneath each board diagram is a representation of the position in what is known as "Forsyth-Edwards Notation", or F.E.N. It's actually readable by humans. Most computer applications nowadays can read FEN, so those of you who may want to study the position, you can copy the line of FEN and paste into your chess app and it should automatically recreate the position on its display board. Or, Windows users can just "triple click" on it and the entire line will be highlighted so you can copy and paste it into your chess app.
