Mike "Li'l Tyrant" Bloomberg: All Other Democrats Must Drop Out of the Race to Permit Me to Beat Bernie Sanders
Apparently the race is almost over -- and Bernie Sanders is projected to have a nigh-insurmountable delegate lead coming out of Super Tuesday.
Hence, the Li'l Tyrant demanding that everyone else drop out and support him as the Bernie Killer.
Mike Bloomberg's campaign is sounding the alarm that Bernie Sanders will soon amass an unsurmountable delegate lead if the Democratic field stays split -- and took the extraordinary step of suggesting laggards should drop out.
What they're saying: Kevin Sheekey, Bloomberg's top strategist, said: "The fact is if the state of this race remains status quo -- with Biden, Pete and Amy in the race on Super Tuesday -- Bernie is likely to open up a delegate lead that seems nearly impossible to overcome."
"I don’t think many people understand the dire circumstances here."
Similar demands were made in the 2016 Republican race. But Rubio stayed in, due to vanity and donor demands.
I don't think it's going to work this time, either.
Some analysts agree with Bloomberg's take -- not that other people must drop out, but that unless things change dramatically, Sanders will be all but nominated as of Super Tuesday.
David Plouffe, Barack Obama's 2008 campaign manager, tweeted in response to Nate Silver's delegate projections through Super Tuesday -- which show Sanders with 41%, followed by Bloomberg and Joe Biden with 18% each.
"If this happens, Sanders would have a pledged delegate lead he’ll never relinquish."
Bloomberg's got some big balls (for a tiny little man) to demand that other people, who've been in the race forever and who have actually gotten votes, drop out to support him.
But is the basic idea even correct? If all the others dropped out, would Sanders suddenly be vulnerable?
Answer: No. Sanders is not just the first place preference for a plurality of Democrats -- he's also got an even more commanding lead as the second-place preference.
Meaning: As more Democrats drop out, Sanders will gain voteshare, rather than lose it.
Also, when asked who they'd support in hypothetical down-to-two-men matchups, more Democrats favor Sanders:
Oh: and the Li'l Tyrant says he won't be standing on a box at tonight's debate.
