(h/t David Llada)
Pic Note
Ms. Ilyina must be relatively new. I couldn't find any other pictures of her that were any good.
TheJamesMadison will be along later with the movie thread. As always, the chess/dress pr0n thread is an open thread, so there is no such thing as an off-topic comment.
Beginner Problem - White To Play (1089)
Goal: White can force mate in 3 moves
Hint: The h6 pawn is pinned

Intermediate Problem - White To Play (1088 )
In thia position, there are a number of different ways to force checkmate. But I am looking for the FASTEST mate (i.e. in fewest moves), and once you think you've found it, see if you can discover any other lines equally fast.
Goal: Mate can be forced in 2 moves
Hint: This is a composition, not a position from an actual game. So every piece on the board has a purpose, and contributes to the solution.

Advanced Problem - Black To Play (1094)
White is threatening mayhem on the d and e files. Can Black avoid getting molly whopped, and if so, how?

So, with 1.Qe3 as your first move, it's a forced mate in 2.
Advanced Problem - Black To Play
3r3k/p2QP2p/1p4p1/2p5/5P1q/2P4B/1P3P2/2K3R1 b - - 0 1
So Black uses checks to gain time to clean up the mess down on d7 and e7
1...Qxf4+ 2.Kb1
Not 2.Kd1? Rxd7+ 3. Kc2 Rxe7
2...Qe4+
3.Ka1 Rxd7
4.Bxd7 Qxe7
5.Ba4
And now the threats are gone. Black may still lose, but he is now in a better position to put up a fight.
Hope to see you all next week!

Note: that cryptic line of letters and numbers you see underneath each board diagram is a representation of the position in what is known as "Forsyth-Edwards Notation", or F.E.N. It's actually readable by humans. Most computer applications nowadays can read FEN, so those of you who may want to study the position, you can copy the line of FEN and paste into your chess app and it should automatically recreate the position on its display board. Or, Windows users can just "triple click" on it and the entire line will be highlighted so you can copy and paste it into your chess app.
