Gun Thread: Low Battery Edition [Weasel]

wrapped pistol scaled.jpg

So I'm at the beach for Christmas week and figured I'd have all sorts of time to catch up on work stuff and write the Gun Thread.Wrong! I discovered my laptop is not recharging, and as I start writing this I have about 15% of the battery to work with. So, this week you all get 15% of a battery worth of a Gun Thread. And you'll like it!

Let's get to it below, shall we?

Well how was your Christmas, Hanukkah, or whatever holiday it is that you celebrate? Did you get lots of loot? Hopefully you were you able to spend the time the way you like; whether that's with noisy family and friends, or in a quieter way on your own. Anyhoo, let us know what Santa left for you under the tree, especially if it's gun stuff!

Buying gun accessories for other people can be a challenge. For example, I'm very particular about the type and brands of products I use and if there is something I need, chances are I already have it. How about you all? Are you hard to buy gifts for?

This heartwarming tale of Christmas giving comes to us from our pal redc1c4:

As some of you will recall, I have GI issues that can leave me in a position where i need a facility NOW, no delay, no way to wait, NOW. As such, I carry empty wine boxes in the crew cab part of my truck, and use them when Mother Nature is being demanding, and that way I can take care of business, then take the leftovers with me to dispose of properly, because, while i may be doing my business in public (as discretely as possible), i am not a F'ing vagrant. The used box rides in the load bed until I either get home, or see a suitable dumpster somewhere.

I had one in the back of the truck from about noon on yesterday, stopping at the VA, Home Despot, Trader Joe's and Vons before getting home and starting dinner. I went out to get the last items from the cab, and to toss the box, only to find that some genius had stolen it at one of my stops....

So "Merry Christmas!" you would be Grinch: you got Scrooged!

And yes, now I AM in the Christmas spirit, which is a rare thing.

Regards and a Merry Trumpmas to all

Thank you for this fine example of giving and the true meaning and joy of Christmas! And if the story of a stolen box of poo weren't enough, redc1c4 also provided us with the following article and list of excuses to explain poor results at the range. I particularly like "My socks are too tight" and plan to use it often!

Thanks redc1c4!

Here is a great video on the fundamentals of pistol shooting produced by our pal mazzman for SGI that is well worth watching. It's short, to the point and covers all of the basics.

Thanks for sending this in, mazzman!

Well this is interesting - a ballistic test of the .22LR cartridge fired at different distances, and sent in by our pal ibguy:

Impressive for a cartridge that often isn't taken seriously. Thanks ibguy!!

Virginia Update
The following joint statement from the Virginia Citizens Defense League and Gun Owners of America is well worth your time to read, and I'm very happy to see these groups working and standing together. It's their response to the Virginia Attorney General's opinion on the 2nd Amendment Sanctuary declarations by localities.

Joint Response of the VCDL and GOA to Virginia Attorney General Herring

Stick that in your pipe and smoke it, asshole.

And on the topic of Virginia...

Last Sunday while discussing the current situation in Virginia, I was critical of the NRA and their seeming lack of involvement in the 2nd Amendment Sanctuary movement. A number of commenters voiced their opinions in the thread, and I received the following from Virginian by Choice, Not by Birth who offered his thoughts on the matter which I think are worth sharing:

I read your note about how the NRA seems to be absent from the Virginia fight. I initially thought that too. But then I had a different thought…..

Maybe I am giving the NRA too much credit, but it is probably better they stay out of this kerfuffle….right now, in Virginia (where I live), this fight is 100% grass roots. If the NRA started with ads and visible support, the Dems could write the whole thing off as “Look, the gun lobby is running the whole thing” and that perception would potentially encourage the Democrat legislators in rural areas to go ahead and vote for new gun control laws. Right now, the rural Dem legislators are seeing this as entirely home grown, or “Who is going to vote for me in the next election if I vote for gun control?”

Like I say, I may be giving the NRA too much credit, but I hope they stay out.

I think VBCNBB makes a great point regarding preservation of the grassroots nature of opposition to a gun-control push by Dems in Virginia. I have no idea if that is the reason for the seemingly hands-off approach the NRA is taking, but in retrospect it sure does seem the best and most effective way to focus on this being about the will of The People and not about Big Gun. Thanks for keeping your eye on the big picture, VBCNBB, and taking the time to share your thoughts!

If you have a question you would like to ask Gun Thread Staff offline, just send us a note and we'll do our best to answer. If you care to share the story of your favorite firearm, send a picture with your nic and tell us what you sadly lost in the tragic canoe accident. If you would like to remain
completely anonymous, just say so. Lurkers are always welcome!

That's it for this week - have you been to the range?
