347 Oregon Muse: What chess app do you use?
Posted by: Dennis Johnson at August 17, 2019 08:39 PM (x+pTm)
I use Chessbase v. 13 to maintain my database of chess problems I think may be suitable for the AoSHQ Chess Thread. I also have Fritz. v. 11, which I suppose I can hook into Chessbase, but I haven't spent any effort in figuring out how to do it because I'm lazy.
Instead, I use the Stockfish engine with the Tarrasch Chess GUI (available from http://www.triplehappy.com) for when I need to test out possible problem solutions.
Intermediate Problem - Black To Play (1034)
Goal: Black can exchange his knight for White's queen
Hint: Set up a discovered attack
8/2Qp2pk/1p5p/p3nq2/2P5/P7/5PPP/2R3K1 b - - 0 1
Advanced Problem - White To Play (1035)
How does White proceed, and what is Black's best response?

1...Kxd8
2.Rf8#
Intermediate Problem - Black To Play
8/2Qp2pk/1p5p/p3nq2/2P5/P7/5PPP/2R3K1 b - - 0 1
Black gives up his knight to get White's queen:
1...Qf4
2.Rb1 Nf3+
3.gxf3 Qxc7
Advanced Problem - White To Play
2k1q1r1/1pp4p/p1N5/2P5/1P2Pp2/3Q4/b4PP1/3R1K2 w - - 0 1
1.Qh3+!
There are two lines:
1...Be6
2.Rd8+ Qxd8
3.Qxe6+ Qd7
4.Qxg8+ Qd8
5.Qxd8#
Better is:
1...Qe6
2.Qxe6+ Bxe6
3.Ne7+ Kb8
4.Nxg8 and White should eventually win with his rook advantage.
Hope to see you all next week!

Note: that cryptic line of letters and numbers you see underneath each board diagram is a representation of the position in what is known as "Forsyth-Edwards Notation", or F.E.N. It's actually readable by humans. Most computer applications nowadays can read FEN, so those of you who may want to study the position, you can copy the line of FEN and paste into your chess app and it should automatically recreate the position on its display board. Or, Windows users can just "triple click" on it and the entire line will be highlighted so you can copy and paste it into your chess app.
