Evergreen State College Freshman Enrollment Down 50%, Says Professor
Ghost town.
John Sexton points out that previous estimates had been that Evergreen's total student enrollment would fall by 18% or 20%. But that was total enrollment, freshman through senior. (Does college really end at "senior" anymore? Or is the Blutarsky Seven Year Plan closer to the norm?)
But people who are already in the college are more likely to stay. When have not yet applied to any school, there is no sunk cost keeping them there.
And it seems like Evergreen has lost half of its expected freshman class.
If that continues -- and why should it not? -- Evergreen's total enrollment will be down by 50% in three more years.
And then, maybe, at some point, it just will have to shut down. Colleges and businesses can't be scaled down infinitely. There's a breaking point where the college just can no longer function as a college.
