Saturday Gardening Thread [KT]
City Park, Lugano, Switzerland
Hello, Gardeners and Friends of Gardeners! Saw some comments about some scary weather in the East this morning. Take care if you are in the path of storms. Thought I would post a few calm garden photos from my Swiss friends' trip to the Italian lake region of Switzerland. If you ever visit, you are likely to be greeted on the street in German. Lots of German visitors there. Much of it does not look a lot like what most people think of when they think of Switzerland. The flower beds in the parks in Lugano seem to be fairly simple. But lovely.
Palm trees in Switzerland.
This looks more like Switzerland. Geraniums in baskets.
This restaurant is in the village of Morcote. More geraniums.
Wanna visit?
The Edible Garden
Hank Curmudgeon sent in a piece with tips on how to upcycle all sorts of things into growing containers for plants. Some good ideas. Here in the hot, arid West, fall and winter are better for planting in small containers than summer.
And I find, from an engineering and water conservation standpoint, this image to be very interesting...Water in the top, drain through, recover at the bottom and re-circulate. Brilliant!!!
Early Apples
A cousin in Utah has a tree full of ripe Jonathan apples.
Have you got a favorite early apple? Gordon mentions a new university-develped one below. Tried a new apple variety lately?
Gardens of The Horde
Gordon sends an image of a golden garden pest. Heh.
He has no predictions about the game.
I have never been to any UM athletic event. I have no connection really. Other than I like their apples. There is a new one this year but I haven't tried it yet.
Here's a beautiful scene:
my late garden with a stand of echinacea.
Thanks.

Looks like a wild form rather than a hybrid. Here are 10 reasons to grow echinacea. Among them: It attracts butterflies and bees in summer and fall, goldfinches in fall and you can make your own echinacea extracts or teas.
