On this day in 1944, more than 150,000 men landed on the beaches of Normandy, beginning the push into Northern Europe and the eventual destruction of the 3rd Reich.
There is an American military cemetery above Omaha Beach in Colleville-sur-Mer, as well as several museums and monuments and memorials along that bit of French coastline. If you have the means and inclination, I heartily recommend a visit. It is far from the bien pensants of Paris, and the people of Normandy remember.
