Mini Chess Thread 03-17-2018
Pic Note
I don't know for sure, but I think the kid is Sammy Reshevsky, who truly was a child prodigy. And I like the guy sitting directly above him with his hand on his head. The look of horror on his face tells you he's just realized that he's hung his queen.
As always, the chess/dress pr0n tread is an open thread, so there is no such thing as an off-topic comment.
Easier Problem - Black To Play (BWTC 203)
Hint: Unite the knights

More Challenging Problem - White To Play (WCSC 4)
Hint: Start the exchanging

Easier Problem - Black To Play
r1b2r1k/pppp2pp/8/4N3/1PBn3q/2Q5/P2N1nPP/R1B1KR2 b Q - 0 1
1...Nd3+!
2.Kd1 Qe1+
3.Rxe1 Nf2#
More Challenging Problem - White To Play
r4k1r/pp3ppp/1bppbq2/4n3/3pPB2/1B1P2Q1/PPPN2PP/R4RK1 w - - 0 1
1.Bxe5 Qxe5
This is perhaps a hard move to see, but trading the queen is probably best. Here's what can happen if Black tries to save her: 1...Qg6 2.Bxe6 Qxg3 3.Rxf7+ Ke8 4.Bxg3 Bd8 5.Nc4 and White's attack looks unstoppable.
2.Qxe5 dxe5
3.Bxe6
And Black cannot recapture, so White has won a piece outright.
Hope to see you all next week!

Note: that cryptic line of letters and numbers you see underneath each board diagram is a representation of the position in what is known as "Forsyth-Edwards Notation", or F.E.N. It's actually readable by humans. Most computer applications nowadays can read FEN, so those of you who may want to study the position, you can copy the line of FEN and paste into your chess app and it should automatically recreate the position on its display board. Or, Windows users can just "triple click" on it and the entire line will be highlighted so you can copy and past it into your chess app.
