BushObamaMcCain: We Don't Like This Upstart Trump, Not Very Much Indeed (MJ)
You know you're over the target when you're taking flak. McCain should be familiar with the cliche.
To fear the world we have organized and led for three-quarters of a century, to abandon the ideals we have advanced around the globe, to refuse the obligations of international leadership and our duty to remain 'the last best hope of earth' for the sake of some half-baked, spurious nationalism cooked up by people who would rather find scapegoats than solve problems is as unpatriotic as an attachment to any other tired dogma of the past that Americans consigned to the ash heap of history.
Not to be outdone, Bush decided that what America really needs is a big heaping helping of moar Bush. Jeb unavailable for comment.
We've seen nationalism distorted into nativism - forgotten the dynamism that immigration has always brought to America. We see a fading confidence in the value of free markets and international trade - forgetting that conflict, instability, and poverty follow in the wake of protectionism.
We have seen the return of isolationist sentiments - forgetting that American security is directly threatened by the chaos and despair of distant places, where threats such as terrorism, infectious disease, criminal gangs and drug trafficking tend to emerge.
In all these ways, we need to recall and recover our own identity. Americans have a great advantage: To renew our country, we only need to remember our values.
And because Obama is intellectually lazy and frankly, dumb, he served up this hot take that's never been used before:
What we can't have is the same old politics of division that we have seen so many times before, that dates back centuries. Some of the politics we see, we thought we put that to bed. That has folks looking 50 years back.
It is the 21st century, not the 19th century. Come on!
Is this not who we are? We don't want to end up on the wrong side of history!
Fucking eyeroll. The American middle class is tired of seeing its wealth destroyed for the sake of non-Americans. It is tired of fighting wars for a high ideal that will surely come into focus and make it all worth it if we just send more troops, wealth, and give it another 10 years. And lastly, the American middle class is bone weary of being lectured by politicians who are long on words and short on accomplishments. Hold the let us, already. Every once in awhile Americans want a little beef.
Which is how you got Trump. Beefy, delicious Trump. It's not complicated.
